After undergoing surgery on his left lateral meniscus in February, Pistons reserve center Jahlil Okafor practiced with Detroit yesterday, per James Edwards III of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Pistons head coach Dwane Casey noted that he expects Okafor to be suited up and back on the court for Detroit within the next few days. Okafor’s recovery was expected to take six-to-eight weeks following the procedure, reported on February 10, so an imminent return fits with that projected timeline. Okafor has not played for the Pistons since January 30.
The No. 3 pick by the Sixers in the 2015 NBA draft, the 25-year-old Okafor has become a journeyman reserve as the league has moved away from score-first centers without a long-range shooting stroke. 2020/21 marks his first season with Detroit, on a two-year veteran’s minimal deal.
The 6’10” center has appeared in 12 games for the club, averaging 10.0 minutes per night, as rookie big man Isaiah Stewart has replaced Okafor in the rotational slot backing up starter Mason Plumlee.
Frankly I’m surprised Okafor is still in the League. Although I think Detroit may be the last stop for a lot of guys before they ink deals on the other side of the Atlantic.
Cut it out with the Pistons bottom of the league crap. We were in the playoffs 2 seasons ago. And we are easily a top 10 team as far as franchise legacy. Houston and Minnesota have a worse record and are paying multiple guys over 15 mill and playing way fewer rookies and 2nd year guys than the Pistons. Cut it out.
Cut it out with the Pistons at the bottom of the league “crap”? But they *are* at the bottom of the league. Unless you consider being 27 out of the 30 to be in the middle?
Should I post script my comment about Jahlil Okafor with a “and BY THE WAY congrats to Detroit on making the playoffs 2 years ago, and winning two championships 30 years ago”?
No, you’re right. Okafor will probably be an All Star next year, not running point forward in Lebanon.
Ok man I will let the late night lame o’s have this section. Go hard.
Don’t let one ruin it. Plenty of FanBoys here. And we all make mistakes. As a Knicks fan I’ve been getting grief for yrs. Most have never even watched them. Yet they know how bad they are and why. Just don’t get personal is my motto. I actually got the the Stons thing.
Al with all due respect theres a difference between being a fan and a homer. My critique of Okafor and Detroit’s roster this year was A) not a critique of the franchise as a whole and B) more or less accurate
If someone posted Kevin Knox is going to be playing Tel Aviv next year I wouldnt reply “No. Stop it. No. Knicks won a championship in 1970. Patrick Ewing.”
There’s a difference.
“Stons” — nothing against you pal or your team. From my standpoint you threw the first punch in this affair but no hard feelings on my end.
The Erie-proximate will be watching Drummond in LA. If he’s slime he will suddenly bloom like algae in a Lake.
I guess by being a troll, you didn’t bother to look up the last Pistons Championship with Chauncey Billups. They did when back to back a championships 30 years ago. Additionally, what bandwagon team did you jump on? Lakers? Funny how trolls can’t get their facts right nor do they have a team they call their own. Pistons have history & a legacy to be proud of and as Weaver turns the tide, they will be challenging for a title in the near future. In the meantime, continue to post your worthless trolling comments about our historical proud franchise. It makes you look dumb & feckless.
David,
A) I hopped on the Knicks bandwagon about 25 years ago. Still going strong, thanks for asking.
B) My apologies for the inaccuracy. Yet minus the 2004 title I omitted, everything I stated about the current Detroit roster is accurate. In fact, if I knew you in real life I would gladly wager that at least 2 players on this roster will be playing overseas next year.
C) My apologies (again), but you’re using an incorrect definition of troll. A “troll” is a person who intentionally relays misinformation. *Not* a person who relays accurate information about your favorite team that, apparently, is difficult for you to digest.
I wish you well in your endeavors. Thanks for the comment.
I was big on Okafor saw him as old school post player. Don’t get why he’s never stuck with team. Seems he’s content just sitting. If I had his size and talent, my heart. I’d be an allstar or at least a starter at the 4. A player who is content is soft to me. He got 1st rd money and has been chilling ever since. He’s still young enough to help a team. I like when you go full rebuild. Pistons have plenty young talent. Had best draft in NBA last yr. Best thing for them is to get Mobley in draft. Hayes is for real he needs time too. More important needs to get healthy n play. Grant was a great signing and they build with him. Or they could even move him. He would bring back a huge load since his contract is manageable. He is that young vet star Knicks would love to add. Or any team looking for a star at the 3. Pistons are not far away IMO.
