Kevin Porter Jr. has been one of the few bright spots in a miserable season for the Rockets, writes Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. Porter has been spectacular in his first two games since being recalled from the G League, averaging 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists.
Houston acquired Porter for a conditional second-round pick in January after he wore out his welcome in Cleveland due to off-court issues. He was a small forward with the Cavaliers, but the Rockets have shifted him to point guard after having him experiment with the position with Rio Grande Valley.
“He does have like a sereneness to him,” said coach Stephen Silas. “He is just composed for a young kid, doesn’t get too high, too low, That’s a steadying influence on the rest of the group, When you have the guy who has the ball in his hands most of the time, which it was (Friday) for him, to kind of play in that manner and not get rattled by a run by the opposing team or a turnover or a bad play, just kind of have the next play mentality, it’s pretty cool for a young guy to be that way. He’s played two games for us. We’re not going to overstate anything. But we think we got something there.”
There’s more from Houston:
- David Nwaba was projected to have an extended recovery time after straining his wrist in a February 28 game, but he asked to play Friday because so many of his teammates are unavailable, Feigen states in a separate story. Surgery has been recommended, which would sideline Nwaba for six weeks. “Dave came up to me and was like, ‘I’m injured, but it’s hard for me to sit over there and watch when we’re so low on bodies and we’re so decimated and we’re in foul trouble. And even though I’m not 100 percent, maybe I can give a little bit,’” Silas said. “To hear that was definitely gratifying. That tells you a lot about him as a competitor and him as a person and him as someone you want in your group.”
- The absence of P.J. Tucker, who isn’t playing while the Rockets try to work out a trade, has put more strain on a team already dealing with numerous injuries, Feigen notes in another piece. Houston signed guard Mason Jones to a 10-day contract so it would have enough active players for Friday’s game.
- The Rockets will use their 24th starting lineup in 37 games Sunday, Feigen adds. The injuries and lack of continuity have played a large role in the team’s 15-game losing streak. “The sooner we can get to the point we know what our starting lineup is going to be, what our rotation is going to be off the bench, the better it will be for the group,” Silas said. “Obviously, it hasn’t been like that all season.”
Tucker who’s had a down season is now said Rockets I’m not playing please trade me. And meanwhile he’s dealing with a bunch of injuries. Meaning that whoever traded for him will probably get a much healthier, well rested and ready to go PJ Tucker for the second half of the season.
Have to remember this dude had to play centre at 6’6 because of Russ and Harden. He started his career off as a SF. Imagine playing Jared Dudley as your teams starting centre, trading away AD and LeBron and being like “Oh Dudlys having a down year this year”. Obviously. Not to mention the Rockets suck must be hard as a 35 year old to get up and feel good about your game when your losing so consistently for a change.
That’s why I want my Sixers to trade for him.
Terrance Ferguson and Tony Bradley for Tucker, heck I’ll even throw in a second rounder if you want. Tucker will return back and be really nice defensively and start knocking down his corner threes better.
Position isn’t always dictated by height. At 245 pounds Tucker can play C.
He’s also extremely strong, I doubt Dudley has the strength to be a center.
Jared Dudley plays truly positionless basketball.
I commend Nwaba and his fire to play under the circumstances. As for Tucker I feel for him too as he has not been treated that great. I do not blame him after being benched with wanting out. Just like with DAntoni they dragged their feet and really did not want to resign him. I am not impressed with Silas. But with fact has not had a team but of walking wounded. I know not what he was expecting but I just do not have a great feeling with him or rest of coaching staff. But guess they will be at helm until Rockets can build a team to compete in their minds then may bring in a real NBA minded coaching staff.
But saw something of a crazy trade option Tucker to Lakers for Harrell. But do hope Tucker goes to a contender who he can help as still think has some left in tank.
But will Rockets look better with their rebuild to start some now and during off season than Texans will look like later this year. McNair needs to sell there.
Boy crazy sports world in Houston
I can’t imagine too many other coaches doing better than Silas has with what he has been forced to deal with so far this season. He has had to use 24 different starting lineups already. And while trading Westbrook for Wall was definitely the right thing for the team, the Harden trade was extremely tumultuous, both before and after. It sucks to see Tucker go, but hopefully they can get a younger player for him that can join the rotation with Wood, Wall, Tate, Porter, etc. Maybe they will get someone decent for Oladipo too.
Calmness with a steadying influence, that Porter. Just don’t move his locker!
Ya thanks Nwaba. You cost me an undefeated betting night…lol
Porter being really good isnt a revelation. I had him 15th in the draft, and at one point, less than a year ago, he was clearly Cleveland’s best asset. That team, by the way, could now use someone like him at those 2/3 spots, so good job by them…
Their loss is the Rockets’ gain, but going to a team where he can develop alongside Wood and Wall is what’s best for KP3 (his new nickname).
Hold on…the guy who list his sh*t in CLE is now a serene, calming influence in HOU? Is this the coach doing some player whispering? Who is buying that? He still has a few valleys to traverse so let’s not sing too many verses of Kumbaya yet.
Rockets (11-25)
Wizards (14-23)
Suns (25-12)
Nets (26-13)
This is what happens when you leave Houston.
“See Ya” …. Wouldn’t wanna be Ya .
Worst team in NBA who’s pick belongs to OKC ….
