With less than 36 hours to go until the 2021 trade deadline, the Raptors are “hurtling toward a roster transformation,” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who reports that the team is engaged in multiple trade discussions involving Kyle Lowry and Norman Powell.
We covered some of the latest Lowry and Powell rumors late last night, noting that Lowry will reportedly seek a two-year contract worth at least $50MM from whichever team lands him, while Powell seems increasingly likely to be moved.
Wojnarowski confirms that Powell will probably be dealt, suggesting the question now is more about which of his “dozen or so” suitors will land him. Toronto could go in a number of different directions on the Powell front, depending on whether the team prioritizes young players or draft picks, Wojnarowski suggests. The odds of a Lowry trade are also gaining traction, Woj adds.
The Sixers and Heat have been frequently cited as the most likely landing spots for Lowry, but there are a handful of other teams involved as well, according to Wojnarowski, who says the Raptors are taking into consideration the veteran guard’s wishes as they consider possible scenarios. Lowry has an “open mind” about several possible destinations, sources tell ESPN.
Here’s more on the Raptors’ top two trade candidates:
- The Sixers have discussed separate deals with the Raptors involving both Lowry and Powell, reports Wojnarowski.
- In a deal with the Sixers for Lowry – not Powell – the Raptors would want at least one of Tyrese Maxey or Matisse Thybulle, but Philadelphia appears unwilling to part with Thybulle, per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
- Michael Scotto of HoopsHype has heard similar rumblings, writing that Maxey is among the assets available in a package for Lowry, while the Sixers are reluctant to part with Thybulle. Some executives around the league believe the inclusion of Thybulle – who has drawn interest from multiple teams – could swing the Lowry sweepstakes, Scotto adds.
- One league executive thinks a package of Maxey, a first-round pick, and matching salaries (Danny Green, Tony Bradley, and Mike Scott) could get a Lowry deal done, assuming the Raptors can open up roster slots for all the incoming players, Pompey writes.
- Tyler Herro is the sticking point in a potential Lowry-to-the-Heat trade, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca (Twitter link). Toronto wants Herro, who still has two years left on his rookie contract after this season, but Miami is more comfortable parting with RFA-to-be Duncan Robinson, Grange explains.
Powell,Baynes,McCaw,Davis,late pick for Derozen.
Stanley Johnson,Mat Thomas,2024 pick for Bamba or Powell, Stanley Johnson and a pick for Bagley & Jabari…
The Raptors shouldn’t do this because Demar is a free agent, and if they start a rebuild Demar would not fit into the team
Sixers should do that. That’s a dangerous team if you only give scott Bradley and Maxey. 1st and 2 2nds maybe more but Lowry is a guard they need.
Nah from Philly! I don’t think Scott matches salary it would cost Green as well…I don’t think Lowry – Green makes us better than adding Ball, Powell, or even George Hill + us keeping Green. I would love to add Lowry he is a Philly boy after all…I just think he costs more than I am willing to spend in players assets and price next year or 3.
Ujiri brought a Championship to Toronto, had the Superstar he brought in leave, and was probably ready to start the rebuild last year before the club exceeded expectations. Losing Serge specifically hurt the club’s locker room, and now it’s time to retool.
The good news is the Raps are further along than most in that process having Fred, Boucher, OG and Spicy on long term deals. Anybody other than those four should be fair game at the deadline.
About as good a time for Masai Ujiri to start the RAPTORS rebuild.
They got a decent core of FVV, OG, Siakam & Boucher to rebuild around and trade-pieces Lowry & Powell, both still with massive value.
The SIXERS & HEAT are the obvious landing spots for Lowry, but say the MAVS offer a few of their young-ish forwards – Doncic & KP’s playoff education will go full throttle, plus Lowry will fit right in with Hardaway, Richardson, Brunson, etc.
TOR may be talking transformation bc it will take trading for both Fornier and Gordon to make the pieces fit. Then they would still need a big big.
They do not have to rebuild in the tanking sense, just trade a guard, but that may be hard to fit salarywise.
I think Ibaka was more valuable on-court than off… players just do not want Ujiri’s mystique to wear off or declare his assessments in error.
Remember when I said Toronto was gonna stink and regress and you said “that’s what people said last year” well who’s right now? I’ll wait…
You have a crush on them and hate them simultaneously…
?? But I was right! Their decline was a year late. I frequently said that they will pay this year for Ujiri’s Giannis-dreaming. Not sure about that quote’s context but way to recall.
I did not have TOR ranked above 6:

Foxtrot- I like their unis & branding but am not extreme on TOR. Cavs fan, but I watch games all over, esp these days.
I personally would have tried to keep Ibaka and let someone else pay FVV
I was not an Ibaka fan and am surprised he is doing so well for LAC. Leads me to believe he wasn’t happy at TOR…of course he was not a starter officially there, but did make the finals. He was so casual!
I’ve been very big on Ibaka for a long time, so I guess we see it differently
Toronto has an opportunity to add talent and mini rebuild without losing Siakam, VanVleet, Annunoby. Hard to pass-up!
As I’ve said, as a Heat fan, I would rather move Hrro for Lowry than Duncan Robinson
Philly makes no sense to me. Maxey reminds me of a remedial version of Lowry, so you wouldnt move him. I personally like Isoah Joe as well. I’m not sure they need guard help right now. Also not sure you would want to lose depth with Mike Scott at the 4, although you do have Paul Reed there, and Simmons just moves to that spot when Harris isnt in the game, and Danny Green has been inconsistent shooting the ball, but is still a needed defender on the wing…I dont like the idea of them messing with what they have. Maybe another shooter at the 2/3 spots? That makes Powell make some sense, but then the question about who gets sent out is still there.
A lot of talk recently about what Heat should be willing to pay for Duncan Robinson, and whether or not he should be moved. Right now, it would be extremely hard for me to think he should be moved. I’m not even sure what I would be willing to move him for. If anything, I’d consider the idea of potentially being able to sign and trade him in the offseason, when more options are available. I’m sure the Heat are looking at Max Strus, either to pair with him on the roster, or potentially somewhat replace him, depending on if they move him/what they move him for…
Kendrick Nunn’s future is also interesting. I know they’ve liked Gabe Vincent, and they have other guards, if those guys dont get moved. I’d rather have Nunn than Herro this year, depending on the deal, but going into the future I’m not so sure, with Nunn probably getting something in the $11-15 million range on his next contract…
In certain trades where they may have to move some of their shooting, with Olynyk and/or Herro, I do worry about potential spacing issues, and losing the ability to stretch the floor from that big spot, so they would have to be careful on who they target, and/or who they can then add in free agency/buyout market. I would imagine that might be a spot where Strus could get a regular contract, of a roster spot is opened
I want to see more of how they look with Iguodala and Ariza there together. 1 of them should start, moving Olynyk back to the bench. Okpala had looked good lately though, especially when Bam was out, so not sure what would be most effective for him
Heat wanting to hold on Hero vs Robinson might be all about cap space/tax/use of full MLE. RFAs like Robinson and Nunn (not max players) are hard to price, as market is in offer sheets. Dealing with two of them in a single off season can make other moves difficult, particularly since RFAs usually get done later.
Ya but Robinson is currently exponentially more valuable than Herro, in my opinion. I would only move Robinson if they’re getting Anunoby and Powell in a much bigger trade, in which case, they’d obviously also have to include Herro, which I’d be fine with
