Teams have checked in on Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith, though it’s uncertain if he’s available, Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News tweets. His recent uptick in play, plus his very affordable contract ($4MM this season and next), has increased interest in him.
As Townsend explains (Twitter link), if the Mavericks want to make a run at a player like Aaron Gordon, Norman Powell or John Collins, Finney-Smith would likely have to be included in any deal, along with perhaps Jalen Brunson and draft picks. However, Dallas can’t offer a first-rounder earlier than 2025, which makes it difficult for it to make a major move.
We have more on the trade front:
- The Celtics are considered the frontrunners to acquire Gordon, multiple sources told The Action Network’s Matt Moore. The Magic are expected to continue to take offers up until Thursday’s deadline. The Nuggets, Trail Blazers and Mavericks are also in the running but Boston has offered two first-round picks and the other contenders for Gordon haven’t done that. It’s assumed there will be some protections on those picks. Evan Fournier could also go to Boston in a separate deal. The Celtics would send a player — the Magic prefer Marcus Smart — and the two picks, using their $28.5MM traded player exception as part of the deal.
- Richaun Holmes has become a top trade target for multiple teams, ESPN’s Jordan Schultz tweets. It would take a sizable offer to pry him away from the Kings, Schultz adds. H0lmes has expressed his contentment with his current team. He had 17 points and 16 rebounds against Cleveland on Monday.
- While the Heat could make a major move, they appear unwilling to part with Tyler Herro, according to another Schultz tweet. Miami considers Herro an essential part of the future and is a favorite of team president Pat Riley, so Schultz would be shocked if the second-year guard is moved.
Josh Richardson and Finney-Smith for Kelly Oubre.
GSW gets JRich who is an upgrade for the defence and can operate as a back up ball handler and help run an offence. DFS gives them another wing shooter and some depth.
Mavs get Oubre which means moving Hardaway to the starting SG. Mavs would have Doncic surrounded with shooters. Oubre also can defend well at times and be a real threat in isos.
Mavs would have a strong starting 5 and then off the bench have the likes of Brunson, Terry, Burke, Green, Iwundu, Kleber and Marjanovic to call upon.
Mavs could then hit FA with money to spend but also fall back option like Oubre and Hardaway
So dumb…
Why? Mavs swap JRichs defense and secondary ball handling for Oubre who has more upside, a shooter and plays into their style.
GSW gets an upgrade on defence and upgrade in depth
haha dorian finney-smith’s skill set alone is enough for oubre’s lol. salary matching you say? add the other little contracts. no one is dumb enough to understand that jrich is way.. out of the discussion HAHA!
Agreed. This trade is way too good for the GSW. Won’t happen.
richardson and Fnney -smith are better players than oubre—-i wouldnt trade either one of them heads up, much less both
Agree. The Mavs would never make this trade.
Terrible trade for the Mavs
James johnson, josh green, Dorian finney smith and diwght powell for aaron gordon, evan Fournier and mo bamba
Guessing you’re from Texas…
Georgia
Magic are getting better offers than this for Gordon and Fouriner
Fair two trades
Celtics get Fournier and Gordon
Magic get Smart and two Firsts
Put valuable assets in table
Enough to beat 76ers and Heat?
Seen this deal else where doesn’t make sense to me. Celtics are giving up arguably the better player and 2 firsts for an expiring deal down grade at SG and Aaron Gordon who is inconsistent and hasn’t lived up to his potential.
Celtics defence would be much worse too
That’s what I’m saying smarts their engine and wants to be there, the chemistry will not benefit.
Kemba + … for the 2 Magic is way better !!!
I agree! As a Philly fan it makes sense and I hope they do lol. But in reality Aimge is smarter than Sillivan and i. Ant see him doing this.
Why does anyone think Fournier or Gordon is a better player than Marcus Smart. Smart is the soul of the Celtics.
Celtics should trade Kemba for Terry Rozier. Or send Kemba to Knicks for Knox and fillers.
The Celtics are a .500 team in the East despite having Tatum, Brown and Kemba.
If Marcus Smart is, in fact, the “soul” of such team, maybe it’s time that team finds itself a new soul?
Boston has a record of trading away their “heart/soul” players… IT, also I think someone else.
knox is a filler
It is a bummer that the Celtics had to let Rozier get away in the first place. IMO if the Celtics had not signed Hayward to such an oversized contract then the Celtics would not have been in a position in which they had to let Rozier go.
Celtics should be sellers, not that they have much to sell. This season is lost. Everyone but Tatum, Brown or Rob Williams should be on the marker.
There’s more temptation to be a buyer than a seller with the expanded playoffs, though Danny Ainge himself has said the team is not championship material. However, the talent they have is capable of going on a roll as long as it make the playoffs. If it’s a change of scenery thing, it may be worth it to them to put Smart and picks on the table for Fournier, Gordon, and Bamba.
If Boston is happy “contending” for a 9th or 10th “seed” – they should sell everyone and start over.
There’s no shame in taking a year to trade your less useful positive assets for a guy you can add to the core.
Tatum, Brown, Smart, RWilliams are the future. Shop everyone else to add to and around the core and they might be legit contenders again within a season or two.
Or go all in for a play in game…
Celtics need a rebounder. Their TPE will expire, might as well use it and get drummond.
They have a rebounder in Thompson. That’s all he does. TPE won’t cover Drummond. That’s been stated here multiple times. It doesn’t expire until the offseason. They don’t need to use it now.
The takes around here seem to have gotten even dumber in my absence.
no shame in buying if the price is right. two 1st round picks for aaron gordon is … probably the wrong price
Fournier/Gordon would be a haul for the C’s. Nothing in the deal sounds out of touch with reality. Boston is definitely in the running for these guys. Wonder what Denver is offering?
CELTS need a jolt to save their season – losing Hayward had a more profound effect than first anticipated.
With Hayward gone, Kemba out the start of the season and Smart out more than a few games, both Tatum & Brown ramped up their stats. It got them All-Star berths but it didn’t elevate their team game much.
Tatum seems to settle more for the long-ball now. Often, Brown seems to forget he has team mates on the floor with him.
Ainge needs to make a change soon. The East 4th seed is very much up for grabs. I’m not sure if Fournier, Gordon or Barnes (?) would do it for them though.
The Celtics taking a pass on Indiana’s offer to Hayward is not aging well – could have had Turner and McDermott in their rotation right now instead of giving up assets for guys like Gordon, Fournier, and Barnes.
I think any of those guys would help, but that’s almost by default. Celtics bench has been bad this year.
Better to wait it out this year and make a more strategic move over the summer than give up multiple picks for a guy who might not move the needle that much, and further lock yourself into a roster that probably can’t contend
Celtics are the 8th seed 1 gm out of 4th seed. Despite playing inconsistent this yr. And let’s face it , roster issues. Kemba is probably their biggest issue they need to clear up. One way or the other. But it’s not going to happen this yr. Makes no sense giving Kemba away. Smart is a big part of their core and D. Chemistry might take a hit. But a shooter like Fournier can only help. Gordon is also a nice piece to add to Tatum n Jaylen. 2 picks and Smart plus another young player. Has to be at least that. I like Smart and see him as an important part of team. But losing only him and gaining Gordon n Fournier. Definitely makes Celtics better deeper. Plus they can now move Thompson. Now imagine they also pick up a player in BO market. It’s bold and this is an upgrade. Danny finally woke up !!!!! I like it
Good point on the seeding of the East right now, saying someone is 4th or 9th in the East doesn’t mean a whole lot considering there’s about a game between multiples seeds. Boston could be a 4 seed by next week and all of the sudden their season will be saved
I’m a proponent of them at least testing the market for Kemba, although it seems unlikely anyone will bite this year. Maybe in the offseason, but I think they’d probably have to attach a pick or two to get off that contract unless Walker’s play starts to bounce back
Will be interesting if Danny is really offering two 1st round picks for Aaron Gordon after low balling countless other potential trade targets.
Danny could have had Turner and McDermott essentially for free this summer, since Hayward was leaving either way. Now you’re moving two firsts for a guy (Gordon) who this year has been a worse player than Turner.
Mavs need to buy low on Kemba. They loved him as a FA
