ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski expects Rockets guard Victor Oladipo to be “prominent” in trade discussions leading up to the March 25 deadline, he said in the latest episode of The Woj Pod. However, it’s not clear what sort of return Houston will want or if any teams will be willing to meet the asking price.
As RealGM relays, Wojnarowski and ESPN colleague Tim Bontemps believe teams will be reluctant to aggressively pursue Oladipo since he hasn’t recaptured his All-Star form in Houston (he’s shooting .399/.316/.772 since joining the Rockets) and will be seeking a huge new multiyear contract as a free agent this offseason.
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the NBA:
- A number of power forwards are among the most intriguing players on the trade market, but teams like the Kings, Magic, and Bulls are sending signals that they won’t necessarily feel compelled to move players like Harrison Barnes, Aaron Gordon, and Thaddeus Young, writes ESPN’s Brian Windhorst (Insider link). According to Windhorst, teams that have called Sacramento have found the club willing to discuss Nemanja Bjelica and Jabari Parker, but more hesitant to talk about Barnes.
- The Bulls appear more likely to consider moving Lauri Markkanen than Young, Windhorst adds in the same story.
- According to Zach Lowe of ESPN, a number of strong playoff teams are interested in Cavaliers center JaVale McGee. However, those clubs are gauging the likelihood of a possible buyout for McGee before committing to giving up an asset for him.
- Bobby Marks of ESPN closes the book on the trade that sent Torrey Craig to the Suns, tweeting that Phoenix sent $110K to the Bucks in the deal. That’s the minimum amount possible this season if a team trades cash.
Oladipo is seeking $120 million contract, comparable to Hayward?
I read that the asking price for Dipo is sky high, which means you overpay to get him and overpay to sign him
As I said, he is worth a garbage expiring contract plus 35th pick
No way Oladipo will get the same contract as Hayward. The Hornets overpaid for Hayward anyway. Not to say that Hayward isn’t a good player.
Where do you get this idea that he is seeking a $120 million dollar contract? He is not a free agent. He can’t make demands.
A solid young player and a 1st would be all I’d care for in an Oladipo deal.
Lonzo is a solid young player and a Pelicans First?
No way
I think that’s more than what the Rockets should expect. Lonzo is more than solid, IMO. Houston would also have to be willing to offer him a large deal in the offseason.
Depends who thinks they can sign the other player. If Ball wants to sign with Houston its a fair deal and Oladipo with pelicans.
Lonzo and the Pel’s 1st for Ball, it will never happen. Absurd. Way to good a trade for the Rockets.
Meant Lonzo and Pel’s 1st for Oladipo won’t happen.
They would be lucky to get either a young potential stud or an expiring contract to go with a high 1st or a 2nd
Agree to disagree. I never said anything about a “young potential stud.” I said solid young player. I feel those are pretty different things. Also, you’re saying a HIGH 1st. That’s pretty valuable. I didn’t say anything about a high 1st. A team trading for VO wouldn’t likely be a playoff team. That’s prob a bottom a pick in the bottom 1/3 of the first round.
Would*
Hopefully the Rockets can work out a decent trade, but whatever they can get for Oladipo it will be way more than a garbage expiring contract and a second round pick like some armchair GM’s here think he’s worth.
Camfrost I think you may be on to the max Houston could expect, and if they got the type of offer you’re suggesting they should bite.
But I think it’s optimistic. Houston has no leverage, and VO isn’t the player he used to be.
Exactly. No leverage. Oladipo only makes sense for a team that believes that the team can make run for the title this season. Oladipo is just a thirty game plus the playoffs rental.
Houston is running out of time. Will just have to take what they can get.
He’s not worth any of that on an expiring contract.
If a team wants VO, then they’d be dealing for him with the interest in re-signing him. If they like him, then I’d imagine they’d offer a solid young player and a 1st. I don’t see that being a ridiculous offer to make.
The “non-value” of expiring contracts is very overblown. In the NBA, you not only get the player for the playoff push, but you also get his Bird rights. Those Bird rights are very valuable because it means you can offer a player more years and more money than any other team. Sure, you might lose a couple of guys that prefer to go somewhere else for less money, but most of the time at worst you are going to get at least a sign and trade.
Bingo.
Bird rights can be valuable, if the guy is a max player (or can command a 5 year deal), or if the team acquiring him won’t have the cap space to sign him (or an equivalent player) in the offseason. Otherwise, there isn’t much value in Bird rights.
But there is also a benefit in getting a guy playing with your team during a playoff push, especially if they have success. Provides a comfort level on fit, for both sides. Of course, it could work the other way too.
Raps should trade for Bamba or Bagley. Rox will end up losing Oladipo for nothing, which is very foolish. The heat may as well trade for Dipo since he wants to be in South Beach(Olynyx, Harkless, Nunn & a pick).
Oladipo has not shown he 100%. No one is giving up much for him. Then he wants max money. Which no one is giving him. Rockets should take best offer. Cause he’s walking. Teams will monitor him this yr. I would not offer him a big contract. For Knicks we have other more realistic options. For us it’s not worth taking a chance on him.
When has oladipo been healthy.. he had one good year in Indiana the. Got hurt.. why is everyone so high on him.. he wouldn’t last in Miami.. that training camp would destroy him.. has hard enough time staying on court as is.. could you imagine if he put in the hard work heat players go thru during camp and practice..
How exactly is Oladipo walking if no one is willing to give him a max contract? It doesn’t work both ways. Either someone with a lot of cap space is going to give him a 4-year deal that’s too rich for the Rockets to match. Or since they have his bird rights and can do a sign and trade up to 5 years (or keep him on a 5-year deal) then they can send him to a contender that lacks the necessary cap space to sign him as an UFA.
He’s a FA….. u understand what that means. Or we need to explain it to you. He already turned down an extension from Rockets. Only way is he would sign a max with bird rights with Rockets. Then they could sign trade him. But again do you watch the NBA . You think jus cause he’s a Rocket he’s got privileges. You are the biggest uninformed Homer when it comes to anything Rockets. You were bad mouthing Oladipo until he became a Rocket. Bro you are Exposed already…….. So Again
No one is paying max money for Oladipo. Which means he will walk and test FA. Wether he is traded or not. He thinks he’s worth 30 mill. Only way he will ever see that. Is take a yr contract 15-20 mill and prove it. Rockets are not paying him don’t even want him Lol. So they will take best deal as they should.
Learn the rules. Rockets don’t have a matching right. Nor can they do a S&T for 5 years, or any terms different than a team can sign him outright for. Rockets do have the right to sign him (as a 29 year old former AS in steep decline) for 5 years if he’s willing to stay there.
Rockets would be wise to look at Markkanen. He’s a solid stretch 4. Bulls want to move him too soon. They could use Oladipo in a three way maybe. That would be genius to do.
I think bjelica will join to heat and the kings recicve Kelly olynyk also this is my list of players I think that will not be on a nba roster next season 1. Dante Exum he’s just a bust that’s somehow in the NBA 2. Vincent Poirier he has like no NBA experince mostly g league 3. James Ennis III we have seen him bounce back and forth to other teams I see James playing overases next season why he mostly gets traded all the time when u sign a 1 year deal its mostly u will get waived or traded joe many have we sign that’s happen a guy signs a 1 year deal gets traded or waived in mid season 4. Wenyen Gabriel somehow he’s on the pelicans barely even play him what’s the purpose of having him if he plays like 1 second per game 5. Patrick Patterson im a clippers fan we never even play him only until the last seconds of the game
I agree highly with a Bjelica/Olynyk swap would be good for both teams depending on the filler SAC would insist on including. Covers a possible Richaun Holmes departure in the offseason too.
You can tell the Bulls are showcasing Markkanen a little and want to trade him. Dipo can get a mid 20’s to late 1st and matching expiring salary. Dragic and a 1st is reasonable. No young player also. Peyton Pritchard and a 1st seems too much for expiring, hobbled, Dipo. Just not seeing the same value as is being reported. Bledsoe/Ball for Dipo/Gordon? I wouldn’t throw a pick either way in this scenario. Tough to guess what happens. Lots of sellers, few buyers this TD. The reality of revenue loss due to coVid is having effect. No long term salary commitments to non-stars. Waivers could be a better meat market this season.
Don’t think the Bulls are showcasing Markkanen. Markkanen is one of the Bull’s best players. Don’t think that the Bulls want to trade Markkanen. Markkanen is only 23 years old, already a veteran, a 7 footer who is mobile, can stoke the 3, put the ball on the floor. Just don’t expect Markkanen to be a tough guy inside. Markkanen isn’t costing the Bulls much yet. After this season, Markkanen will be a RFA. The Bulls can just let the market set the price for Markkanen.
Love the analogy of letting another team pay him as an RFA and the Bulls get nothing in the offseason as a being a better alternative. Probably a Bulls fan, right? His bird rights mean squat at this point, doubt sign and trade offers come flooding in. @ $9 mil what are we talking here anyway. I am gonna hold pat and still agree with the article and other opinions that support trying to compete and build by dealing Markk for something now. The timing is right, and like all previous seasons he sat out for an injury. Give it a rest for the love of god johnm.
I get it that if the Bulls stand pat and after the season another team comes along and offers Markkanen say $85 million for four years then the Bulls are in a quandary. Don’t want to match a contact like that and the Bulls will lose Markkanen and receive nothing. I would take that chance. If I am AK/Eversley I would listen to offers for Markkanen but don’t trade for just for the sake of trading. IMO think it is best for the Bulls to gamble that other teams will not make offers for Markkanen that are ridiculously too high to match.
What would it take to get Markkanen? A 1st and a matching contract?
Sounds about right. A package involving Porter could net the Bulls Aldridge or Kevin Love maybe? Drummond and Windler perhaps? I’d give a high 1st, low 2nd plus matching expiring salary for Markk. He has disappointed and been injured often, value could be even lower. He is young though, and 7 ft tall. Has the right deal for a team that wants him and he wants to stay with them. NYK would be interesting.
The Bulls don’t want over the hill, overpaid players such as Aldridge and Love. The Bulls are a young team that is building.
Expiring contract for Aldridge, and making the playoffs. Other than Love, which I would agree is a long shot. Hence the word maybe after Kevin Love’s name. You need to chat with the Front Office about the Bulls trying to lose more to satisfy your young, building, team ideology. Take it out in an email or something. Stop reading the articles on HoopsRumors.
Sounds likely, although he seems to have fallen out of favor so maybe a matching youngster contract and a 2nd round pick. I still would love to see them swap him for Lonzo.
Bucks should go after Jabari. He’s still friends with Giannis and 2nd time around off the bench when we need that spark of offense
I would bring him back too, but unless he gets bought out, I think the Bucks will have to wait til free agency.
Oladipo will fetch a second round pick and maybe a borderline rotation p!ayer. Any team that gives up more is either run by an idiot and/or desperate.
