The Rockets are among the teams having discussions with the Raptors about shooting guard Norman Powell, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. Citing someone with knowledge of the talks, Feigen reports that Houston is examining deals that would involve multiple teams and players.
Powell could provide a boost to the Rockets’ rebuilding project if they can sign him to a long-term deal. He is expected to turn down an $11.6MM player option and test the free agency waters this summer. The 27-year-old is in the middle of his best season, averaging 19.5 points per game and shooting 43.5% from 3-point range.
Powell is among the most popular names on this year’s trade market, with teams expressing interest in him numbering “in the teens,” tweets Marc Stein of The New York Times.
There’s more trade news to pass along:
- The chances that the Cavaliers will find a taker for Andre Drummond are “50-50,” a source tells Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. Cleveland is hoping to get at least a draft pick in return and is willing to wait all the way to Thursday’s deadline at 3pm Eastern to get a deal done, Fedor adds. Drummond hasn’t played since February 12, when the team decided to keep him out of action while it searched for a trade.
- Cavaliers teammate JaVale McGee is drawing interest from several contenders, including at least one in the Eastern Conference, Fedor notes in the same story. Cleveland is seeking just a second-round pick in return for McGee, according to Fedor, and has no plans to buy him out if he’s not traded. At age 33, McGee has been through this experience before. “It’s definitely hard when you’re in the trade talks as a younger player I feel like, but as an older player, as myself, I’ve been in trade talks plenty of years and plenty of times,” he said. “I’ve figured out how to block it out, play my game and focus on what I have to do. If something happens at the trade deadline, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. You really never know.”
- The Knicks have become a “serious potential destination” for Drummond, tweets Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer. Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report points out that because New York has roughly $15MM in cap room, the team would only have to send about $14MM to Cleveland in exchange for Drummond (via Twitter).
Although at least one “prominent voice” within the Knicks‘ organization is in favor of acquiring Andre Drummond from the Cavaliers, the majority of the front office doesn’t view the big man as a fit, according to Begley.
You should at least source your copying and pasting from Luke Adams article written early today
oh im sorry mr grammar policeman
Yeah….this has nothing to do with grammar
Explains why he copy and pastes lol
Rockets need to just come to terms with their status and trade almost everybody, especially Oladipo.
Rockets should target teenagers from age 13 to 19
They acquired August In with 3 year contract from Bucks
Why not March In?
Agreed. Rockets should offer start handing out contracts to 7th graders.
I finally understand the name. The “silli van” is what he uses to lure and kidnap kids from AAU tournaments.
lol teenagers? You must have some good weed
Well, they are now including the picks they will get through 2027 from the Nets.
The Rockets aren’t trading Christian Wood, John Wall, Kevin Porter Jr, Jae’Sean Tate, KJ Martin, Danuel House, David Nwaba, or even Eric Gordon. They have a great young group of players and will hopefully add a few more before next season. Let’s see who they get for Oladipo.
“They have a great young group of players”
That ‘great young group of players’ just lost like 20 games in a row. They’re terrible. I get that you’re a fan and a homer, but they should probably be trading every single person they can and doing a full rebuild.
They are not terrible they are young and have yet to be trained to do the job at hand. Reference the Knicks did crap with a few different bad Head Coaches. Now the Knicks have a good Head Coach in Thibs and are winning with what amounts to be mostly the same players.
I appreciate the call I just cant lose Daniel House, you have a good day now fellow NBA Gm
*Danuel
Well I’ll be, that’s a much cooler name than Daniel, maybe he’s a hold now.
Lol I was just being a dick
So then: *Danuel /a d
Wall and Gordon don’t fit their timeline. Tate, house, nwaba are all replaceable role players
Timelines are just such a ridiculous notion. Teams do not have to be roughly the same age in order to win. Are LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the same timeline? Complementary skills are far more important than age tokenism.
I find these terms meaningless: role, replaceable, timeline. Timeline-control efforts fail by using a non–performance stat, age; role is determined by the HC; everyone is replaceable. But is winning even the goal here? Are they not measures for taking?
Tate & Nwaba have an on-off of plus14, meaning they very much help the team get ahead on the scoreboard; and Tate leads in minutes. His sub-average shooting stats are subject to improvement with experience. House probably needs external motivation. Being local only helps so much.
*tanking (not taking)
Harder than it sounds for Knicks to send out 14m. I’d think it’d be Ntilikina, Burks plus someone like Rivers for Drummond + 1 (Cook?). Not sure they really add in any additional draft capital if they use their cap room. Cavs would have to like one of those players or the reduced salary (akin to a buyout anyway?).
The one I have listed over the past week had the Cavs giving up Drummond and Dotson or Dellavedova to the Knicks for Ntilikina, Burks, and Rivers. I had the Cavs sending McGee to the Nets for a second rounder to clear the roster space, but it could be with another team.
A few trades Knicks could offer for Drummond that work financially:
1) Ntilikina, Knox, Rivers
2) Ntilikina, Knox, Bullock
3) Ntilikina, Bullock, Rivers
4) Ntilikina, Burks, Brazdeikis
5) Ntilikina, Payton, Knox
6) Ntilikina, Payton, Rivers
7) Randle, Barrett, Quickley, Robinson
Just some possibilities. (Ntilikina will have to be the centerpeice in my opinion)
I reckon the Cavs could be tempted on #7!
Seems to make more sense to use that cap room trading with the Magic.
yup cavs would be foolish not going for that offer!
Crossing my fingers that the Knicks front office accidentally writes “R. Barrett” in the trade paperwork instead of “R. Bullock”
As a Knicks fan who doesn’t even particularly want Drummond, sign me up for any of 1-6, though I’d prefer to keep Burks or Bullock.
I think I want number 5. We could use a backup PG with Payton, and although Knox has busted for his draft position, he could still be serviceable. He’s still really young too. Burks/Bullock/Rivers don’t really fit into our longterm rebuilding plan imo.
Number 1 is my favorite. None of those three apparently fit Thibs’ plan. I have a soft spot for Burks and Bullock, though I would prefer Bullock as a bench player and not the starter he’s been all year.
That being said, I’m not on board with acquiring Drummond, but if it’s for spare parts, why not?
If Burks was traded for, he might take over PG… Is that bad for “rebuilding”? At least it would give Bickerstaff some options. Altman needs to show some player evaluation good fo
Most of 1 thru 6 will not help much and line 7 is dreaming. Knox would continue teasting. Peyton would offer nothing new. Rivers lacks humility and Braz may not even be NBA level.
edit* … good for winning not just promising. Starting young means a long wait, good for lengthy GM employment, but no guarantees the mix will work.
Nitlikina Payton and Rivers works for me.
Powell on an expiring deal and with sky high value Raptors would be foolish not to trade him.
I’d like to see the Raptors finally go young. They got their ring now Lowry wants to go and just build around what’s left. FVV, Siakim, Angunoby, Boucher etc…
I’d go Kyle Lowry for James Johnson, Josh Richardson, Jalen Brunson and a second round pick. Then Norman Powell for Tristan Thompson, Romeo Langford and a second round pick
To finish the season you’d have
1. FVV. Brunson. Flynn
2. Richardson. Langford. Davis
3. Angunoby. S.Johnson. McCaw
4. Siakim. Boucher. J.Johnson
5. Thompson. Baynes
Not the strongest team but you have some youth and some more depth and some additional picks for the future. FVV gets to run the team and JRich helps with the defence and secondary playmaking. Thompson from Canada return home to provide the defence down low. Off the bench Brunson is someone young with potential, he runs the second unit, you have a bunch of young wings, Boucher and Baynes make a solid tandem of bigs too.
Nick Nurse is a good coach they would do well and moving forward you’d have J. Johnson, Richardson, Thompson, McCaw, S. Johnson all expiring deals to spend in FA plus the extra picks for the draft
I like the first one a lot…..I just wouldnt want TT next year in which would be a pivotal year in seeing what works …. I think they can get way better for Powell Rn
Fair enough I just think they need a more from their centre
True, and a lot of teams do, which makes it possible to even type appealing and TT in the same paragraph …more of just think Powell has more value
I think Toronto gets feisty tomorrow, such a smart ownership/front office group I think they get ahead of this downturn
Results in a week will likely show actual interest in Powell, in other words, the Nets want him.
Raptors already have a “small” center.
A get-young plan needs more picks not just flotsam Ujiri did not pick.
Neither Burks nor Bullock are being traded for Drummond, unless the idea is to tank for a better draft pick. We don’t have any other wings that defend, shoot 3’s at 40% and can play 25 mpg. We actually could use a third guy with that profile more than a guy like Drummond.
I agree, and neither fit into the Cavs long term plans. Thibs has gotten great production out of them both so I’m sure he would veto a trade with them. But I guess we’ll see tomorrow
Cavs wouldn’t care if it was Frank, Noel and Rivers. They still save a bunch, and Noel might stay to be a pairing with Allen. For the Knicks none of it makes sense to me. I’d prefer to expend resources fixing things that are broken. Our C spot isn’t.
Drummond doesn’t fit on Knicks, I agree. He doesn’t fit with a most teams tbh.
Exactly. It’s the very reason he was dumped by Detroit. If we were talking 1980’s, he’d be a star.
I agree the Cavs could look to save money more than get a particular player. But the is no comparison between Burks and those others. Burks is prime now and at 6-6 will not be subject to the over-30 decline small PGs get.
Why would he be a tanking pick?— fine stats and versatility.
Noel would be useful but who knows what he wants. If not NYK then why CLE?
@x% – I was saying it would indicate the Knicks might be tanking if they traded Burks. Whatever his market value (contract expires with no Bird rights), he’s super valuable to the Knicks right now. As is Bullock. Sure they can be replaced, but not cheaply by anyone who figures to be available.
