Warriors rookie center James Wiseman wasn’t permitted to practice Wednesday and may not be eligible to play tonight after missing a COVID-19 test during the All-Star break, according to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. A source tells Anthony Slater of The Athletic that Wiseman is expected to be cleared as long as he continues to test negative (Twitter link).
“It was a mistake,” coach Steve Kerr said. “He just forgot. It’s disappointing because he could have used the practice tonight. And we needed him out there. So it’s disappointing that he made the mistake.”
Players are required to undergo daily testing and are given two opportunities, one in the morning and one at night. The requirements have been in place since Wiseman entered the league.
“Every practice we have is crucial, but especially the ones where we can actually get some work in,” Kerr said. “The (first) practice after the All-Star break is always an important one because you’ve got to blow it out. You’ve got to get your legs back underneath you. You also have to get your mind right.”
There’s more on the Warriors:
- Getting past the feeling of needing to impress his new team has helped Kelly Oubre turn around his first season with Golden State, writes Marcus Thompson of The Athletic. Oubre struggled with his shot during his first few games with the Warriors, making just two of his first 30 three-point attempts, but he shot 43% from beyond the arc in February while averaging 20.1 PPG. “When I first got here, to the Warriors, I was feeding into all the pressure of, the salary-cap stuff, the contract year,” Oubre said. “You know, the new team that I would really love to make this a home for me in the future. I was kind of putting too much pressure onto myself.”
- General manager Bob Myers wants to keep Golden State in title contention for as long as Stephen Curry remains in his prime, relays Marcus White of NBC Sports Bay Area. Myers talked about the need to maximize the rest of Curry’s peak years during a radio interview on Wednesday. “What’s your responsibility? It’s to help him win a championship, to put the best players around him that you can,” Myers said. “So we try to do that, and I think for a stretch, we did. … And now we say, ‘How do we keep doing that?’ And it never was easy then, and it’s not easy now, but — we don’t ever have it all figured out.”
- Kerr promises changes to the rotation when the second half of the season begins tonight, Poole tweets. Although Kerr wasn’t specific, Poole believes the new look will involve the backcourt.
Replacing Wannamaker with Poole would be a big help. Wannamaker stalls the offense with his lack of hustle as the PG.
The GSW front office gets a massive, massive F for the utter crud they surrounded Curry with this offseason. The infuriatingly bad Wanamaker was never good and there were dozens of FAs who could have helped this team for the same money. Wanamaker can only succeed in a triangle offense, which is one Kerr literally never uses. Lacob hiring his family members to replace the logo is the one reason why GSW isn’t the top seed right now.
I think Jerry West left on his own. I may be wrong, though.
You’re right, wanted to go home to SoCal.
That’s true he left for the Clippers, but I wasn’t arguing otherwise. GSW replaced West with Lacobs and additionally Bob Meyers has blown every draft he’s done without West there.
West was with GSW from 2011 to 2017 and almost every move the front office has made since 2018 without him has been terrible.
Or maybe the Warriors aren’t at the top of the standings simply because they’re no longer that good. Paying Draymond $100M is one of the biggest reasons they aren’t the top seed right now. Of course the main reason is Klay always getting hurt and who knows how long it will take for him to return to form next season, if he ever does that is.
Brad Wanamaker hasn’t been the same since Kemba Walker took his soul with that step back game winner in the NCAA tournament.
Kelly Oubre for the month of February
20.1 points
43% from the three
Very Few all stars can do both
People are looking at the career average of Danny Green and Redick
Wiseman and Wiggins for Beal and Lopez is totally going to happen, isn’t it?
Not a chance.
Wiseman is not getting traded.
Beal isn’t being traded at the deadline. Depending on what happens in the draft the Warriors might not be able to put up the best offer if the Sixers include Simmons and all their firsts or the Nuggets include Porter Jr and all their firsts.
If only they could throw in Jerry West then maybe the trade could happen.
I’d rather West back on GSW than any player, tbh
he left on his own tbh
If Im GSW I punt 21 for whatever gains I can accomplish in 22 today –
Oubre does not fit into the “family” culture they have established already …He’s not on my roster 22, id look to trade in next 2 weeks
ROS needs to be used to establish Wiseman and keep building Wiggins off season trade value as high as it can get
Really disappointed with the season Wiseman is havin’… far removed from the star I thought he would be one day soon enough, unless he does a radical change in the near future, he will never be even the shadow of the player I thought he was gonna be!
Mistakes like this one he made with the test just shows immaturity but above all unprofessionalism & that is a very bad sign… MIN & GSW will regret for the next couple decades their draft pick, letting slip through their fingers the only generational talent in the 2020 draft, SMH!
Kid’s 19 and has played like what, 15 games?
Stop being so melodramatic and have some patience
Wiseman is fine both now and long term, but GSW has proven to be very extremely bad at developing players, and this combined with Steph Curry being better than ever at 32, really does not match up with Wiseman’s GSW development timeline of JW being a superstar at 23-24.
Kerr also has been sinking Wiseman’s confidence by forcing him to play styles and plays that don’t allow him to be his best. Kerr is the guy who would rather watch Curry set screens for bigs to put up bricks than to watch him bomb 3’s. Kerr and Meyers need to get fired and GSW needs to bring in a high IQ front office and on court coach who knows how to best use Curry.
Marty I thought this was the best year to Judge Kerr as a head coach…Imma wait till end of year but so far ehhhhh not so impressed
What happened to Light Years?
“And it never was easy then, and it’s not easy now, but — we don’t ever have it all figured out.”
It would be “Wise Man” to remember to take the Covid test. Pun not intended
