After being linked to a number of point guards leading up to the trade deadline, the Knicks ultimately didn’t address the position. However, they’re expected to revisit the point guard market in the offseason, and Lakers veteran Dennis Schröder is one player on their radar, writes Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
Schröder is in the final year of his current contract and has reportedly turned down a four-year extension offer worth $80MM+ from the Lakers. That’s a strong indication that he’ll be seeking at least $20MM per year in free agency.
As Begley observes, the Knicks should be able to open up in excess of $50MM in cap room this summer, though it remains to be seen how aggressive the team would be with Schröder. The team will be considering other point guard options as well, including Lonzo Ball of the Pelicans, according to both Begley and Marc Berman of The New York Post.
Unlike Ball, who will be a restricted free agent, Schröder will be unrestricted, meaning the Knicks wouldn’t have to worry about their offer being matched if they get a commitment. However, the Lakers will likely be very motivated to re-sign their starting point guard — even if Schröder walks, the Lakers will be over the cap next season, meaning they wouldn’t be able to easily add a comparable replacement.
After a career year in Oklahoma City in 2019/20 (18.9 PPG on .469/.385/.839 shooting), Schröder’s numbers this season are more in line with his career rates. He has averaged 15.3 PPG, 5.3 APG, and 3.5 RPG with a .432/.338/.848 shooting line in 50 games (31.7 MPG) for the Lakers.
Let the Knicks have him, he is definitely not worth $20M+. LBJ or Caruso can play the point just as well or better.
Right. No one worth 20 mil a year to dribble a ball? This world is upside down.
Okay commie…
Caruso isn’t a facillitator.. I doubt lakers over pay caruso either.. lakers will do a sign and trade for schroder and tht will probably become the pg next year
Find a way to Sign and trade Schroeder to Mavs for Brunson
Trade $25 million salary for $2 million
Not happening.
We better sign and trade or you give him what he wants then find a trade later can’t just lose a good asset for nothing even at 26,27per he has the upper hand right now but it might
bite him in ass later
THT can’t facilitate anything until he learns how to pass. Dude probably has single digit assist on the season.
no thank you.
Lakers and pelicans should’ve traded Schroder for Ball.
Pelicans need a scoring athletic PG more like Schroder, if Zion is going to keep playing point forward.
Lakers could use a facilitator after choosing KCP over Rondo.
Screw that. Don’t want Ball at all. The Lakers can do better.
Shreoder and kuzma two second 2nd rounders for Beal
Hard pass at more than $20M per. Jump shot on the perimeter is bad and doesn’t make the right decision frequently enough to be an effective PG. Knicks should see if they could package the four #1s they have between this year and ‘23 and move up for the 2nd overall and snag Suggs. Can’t see Cunningham not going #1, but Suggs would be solid and a perfect fit, allowing them to take those cap dollars and apply them to a max FA if they feel there’s one worthy.
To me for the style of play I’d much rather continue develop Quickley. Younger and cheaper.
They’re stuck with two injury prone superstars and an overpaid Kyle Kuzma.
I think I’d rather be stuck with lebron James and AD over John wall and wood.. rockets are in for a long rebuild
Two unity prone super stars? LeBron is injury prone now? Man, news to me. People are so ridiculous with their trash assessment on players it’s not even funny
Why the hell would he turn down 4/80 to hope to get 20 aav in free agency. Am I missing something? I know Mrs Ross on Seinfeld talking to Frank ‘somethings missing alright!’
He actually turned down 4/84.. he thinks the lakers are in desperation mode since they are over cap and have his bird rights.. as a lakers fan, it’s a hard pass on resigning him..offense is stagnant with him running offense and took ball out of lebrons hands who led league in assists last year to produce 5 assists and 3 turnovers a game..
I would say his bet is a decent one.
Amazing how well fans know their teams. This is his first time hitting FA. Is it ok if he goes thru with it. Knicks don’t want him. Everyone uses NY. You should probably know that by now.
My point was that turning down 4/$80MMish means he’ll be looking to match or exceed that in free agency.
Yes. It also means that his agent told him it’s at least possible, if not likely, that he can, and/or the downside if he can’t is negligible. Point is his number isn’t his own pipe dream.
He’s a FA why does he have to accept a contract. He just wants to enjoy his rights. Lakers in end can’t let him walk. So they probably will pay more.
I hope when FA starts the Lakers offer him 4/$40mm.
I doubt that there’s any truth to this rumor.
This isn’t Steve Mills that’s running the Knicks right now.
This is Leon Rose, one of the biggest agents in basketball and a basketball savant.
He’s not gonna waste money on a guy whose primary statistic is scoring.
I won’t be surprised if he goes hard after Lonzo ball.
You are half right
Rose is a cheap guy to trade future First round pick
I have this trade proposal last year draft
Knicks trade 8th pick to Wolves for 1st overall pick straight up
How about free agent?
Dinwiddie …. I rather
Everyone uses NY to drive price up. And get attention
His market value is about $25 million per year
Tucker $15m per?
Harrell $15m per?
Carusa?
Pay $120 million luxury tax for both Schroeder and Tucker?
Dunno if he will see this, but @Vince – this is the exact same-style story that’s been posted everywhere about GSW going after Kawhi. No idea why you called me out about it or why you thought I meant tampering?
Kawhi for Oubre sign and trade? Lets go!!!
All of these Knicks FA+Trade rumors this season have been thankfully off base, and I’d file this one in the same category as the others.
I don’t see why NYK would view Schroeder as a guy they’d want to offer 20+ to. They already have a stud rookie score first PG in Quickley and could probably resign Rose – another score first PG – for a fraction of the price. Schroeder is barely an upgrade on either and Quickley’s upside is higher.
I think we’ll continue to preserve space for a big signing and/or make moderate moves around the edges – Centers, shooters, and playmaking guards.
Any starting PG that’s a FA should be on the Knicks radar. Doesn’t mean he’s a target.
The on court fit isn’t horrible, but he’d be a plan C at best, and wouldn’t be that unless the Lakers withdrew all their offers. Lakers are a captive buyer and will likely make the market. Knicks, a cap space team, shouldn’t be offering in their range. Rose doesn’t miss these things.
I think the Knicks need to go for Dinwiddie or possibly Lowry on a short term deal. IQ is great but not sure he can play PG.
Agree, if they go the veteran route, I’d prefer Dinwiddie over DS (Lowry seems unlikely on either end). Dinwiddie isn’t a good distance shooter (like Rose said he’d like in any add) or a good defender (like Thibs would like). Excellent facilitator though.
IMO, Plan A is still an elite young PG that can come in and start (Suggs is an ideal fit), but that ship has probably sailed.
Quickley is enough in the mix that I wouldn’t add a rookie PG unless he’s an elite player who can come in and start. IQ does complement our two best players, but he’ll need to be much more of a facilitator to be considered a long term answer.
If they take Jared Butler as mocked, LAL don’t need to overpay Schroder. Unless it’s a S&T for wing/frontcourt help.
Agents and media will always bring in NY, in any sport. We got money and numbers. Both of what they want and need. Knicks are a young team rebuilding. In the first yr of new FO and Coach. So far they have shown restraint and wisdom to the future. We are loaded with picks and cap space next yr. Another scorer (young star) and a pass first PG. Is absolutely a must for this team. Schroeder is a FA who wants to enjoy it. Lakers can’t afford to let him walk. Unless Lowry signs for less. They have no replacement for Schroeder. So in the end they will up their price some and sign him. He’s not worth more than 20mill to me. Knicks have plenty of options. But I would love to see Dinwiddie start at PG. Rose and Quickly behind Dinwiddie is a Strong tandem. And Quickly can still develop under them. We will always need his shooting. So he still will get mins.
Knicks Imo need a facilitator ….that is not Dennis whatsoever …… sure the easy buckets would fit, seems KNicks have to work (too) hard for every deuce they get but theres gotta be a better way than to commit to this guy for 4 years at 20+ ……..
Dennis agent will leak whatever he can to get the final number as high as he can from LAL –
Lal are over the barrel here
What is Lowry worth at 35 (next yr) in today’s market????
To a contender he’s certainly worth that price. To a team who wants to move up in standing and be a playoff force. He’s worth the market price. So who is that and is willing, able to pay that. And where would Lowry go and even take less. Philly is home for him. He can start in LA. He can start in NY and help bring us back to contender. I would think it’s up him, to where he wants to go. I’d think winning another ring or two would be high on the list. Therefore would take less. Even the ME teams can offer around 10 mill a yr. Lowry can push a contender over the top. Question is can they sign him.
I think the answer to that question is pretty much known right now. There are only a handful of teams with cap room, and – save for maybe Dallas – none of them are contenders with Lowry. (And I’d argue Dallas isn’t exactly a great fit.)
Maybe Lowry is thinking about a sign and trade? That’s possible. But Philly and LAL probably made the most sense in that regard and Philly just gave up some of its minimal assets for George Hill at the deadline, and LAL didn’t have the assets to entice Toronto three weeks ago—so I don’t see how they will in the summer.
Personally, if it was a front-heavy 2 year deal, or a 3 year deal with a team option for the 3rd I would be ok with NYK signing Lowry.
But anything longer I don’t think the risk-reward is in NY’s favor. Splurging on Lowry might help us win a round or two, but it’s not getting the Knicks anywhere near a ring—especially given his age. So anything more than a glorified 1 year rental (with a second year as an expiring to make him movable after a season) would be a blunder.
No
The Knicks already have a log jam of worthless guards.
There are only three Lakers with solidly positive on-offs…
LJ, AD, & Caruso. Those 3 and Talen are 4 starters.
For CBA reasons they may re-sign Schroder as basically a backup Lebron…
Best would be a sign&trade for depth.
Depends if Drummond wears out his welcome.
