Knicks guard Alec Burks has been placed on the league’s health and safety protocols list, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post. Burks is coming off a 21-point outing against New Orleans on Wednesday.
Burks has exceeded all expectations since the Knicks signed him to a one-year, $6MM contract, having averaged 12.6 PPG on 40.8% shooting beyond the arc in 25.8 minutes per contest. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent once again this summer, but the club has plenty of cap room and will try to retain him, Berman writes in a separate story.
We have more on the Knicks and Nets:
- The Knicks have their eyes on Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson, according to Berman, though he won’t hit free agency until after next season. Dallas needs only to guarantee his contract this summer, a modest $1.8MM, to hold onto him for one more year.
- Brunson’s father, Rick Brunson, is under consideration as a possible Knicks assistant, Berman writes in the same story. The elder Brunson served under Tom Thibodeau in Chicago and Minnesota but left the Timberwolves amid allegations of workplace misconduct. He’s currently coaching Camden HS in New Jersey.
- After allowing big man John Henson‘s 10-day deal to expire, the Knicks might add to their backcourt instead of pursuing another center, according to Berman. Euro standout and former NBA point man Mike James is one of the players the team is considering. James was recently suspended by CSKA Moscow after an altercation with his coach and returned to the U.S., though he’s still technically under contract with the Russian team.
- With the abrupt retirement of LaMarcus Aldridge due to a heart condition, Nets GM Sean Marks is mulling all options regarding a roster move, Brian Lewis of the New York Post tweets. The team is “doing due diligence” and hasn’t decided whether to bring in another big man or add depth elsewhere.
The Nets could always sign Tyson Chandler, he’s not doing anything right now.
Sucks for the Knicks. Burks has given them some life in the fourth quarter the last few games, which has been a big issue for them. Hope he’s OK and back quickly.
The Nets also still have the weekend to use Spencer Dinwiddie’s DPE if they so choose. I highly doubt they would, but the only available player I could see it be worth it would be DeMarcus Cousins. If he hasn’t signed a rest-of-season deal with the Clippers yet, that could convince him to join. I believe he’d be eligible to play for them in the playoffs since he hasn’t been on a standard contract since 4/9.
Boogies on a second 10 day with the clips
True and he will probably stay, but if the Nets wanted to give him a reason to move, they could offer him the $5.7M DPE today to finish the season. Since he wasn’t on a standard contract as of 4/9, I believe he’d be eligible for the playoffs with a new team like the Nets.
Yes we will miss Burkes. Well you hope Toppin, Knox, Frank can wake up for 3 gms. We are in a race so we need wins. Mavs, Pels, Hornets, Hawks next 4 gms. Knicks not interested in Brunson. They will sign Dinwiddie next yr.
Nets should reach out to Faried. I would
Knox and Frank will provide nothing and won’t be asked to, imo. They’ve played a combined 13 minutes in the last 10 games.
Frank provides wayyyy more than Knox.
Knox is too offensive-minded.
Frank is too defensive-minded. (never looks to
Combine them and you have the perfect player
Yup – it’ll be on Rose and Quickley to make up for the lost offense off the bench. Maybe a little Obi too.
Nets Should Sign
HASHEEM THABEET
You can’t teach height, but is he still overseas? I highly doubt he’d be the Nets choice.
Definitely want Burks back in NY if he doesn’t require a lot of money. Hopefully 8-10 year.
nets need a point guard badly… currently only have 1 healthy
They have several due to come back in the next few weeks – Harden, T. Johnson, and, possibly, Dinwiddie. If the Nets want to use a 10-day to get someone now, they could sign Jeremy Lin. If they can replace Chiozza in his 2-way slot, they could sign Jeremiah Martin. However, I believe both may need to clear COVID protocols to join the team.
Knicks beat Mavs, for their 5th straight win.
Knicks were on the Road.
Go NY go NY go!!
Don’t like this trend at all. This is old Thibs coming out. RJ- 46.06, Bullock- 40.42, Randle- 40.38. Even if you make the 6th seed. They are not winning in 1st rd. I get making sure you make playoffs. But this teams priority is building a core. Not killing it. I doubt they lose this game (Mavs) if Toppin played 10 more mins. Or Frank played 10 more mins. RJ and Randle are in top of league in mins. Just no reason with no Mitch. That Toppin can’t get 20 mins. Randle reminded KP why he’s not wanted in NY tonight. We only want players who live to be here. Good D KP.
I saw Randle and RJ at 22 mins 1st half Bullock 21 and was like WOW are we back in the 80’s?
Thank you for the win
Dallas is so soft, definitely coming in under my expectations from preseason
Luka can do it all but he cant do everything.
You can see frustration mounting in Cuban and Luka –
I dont think theres a market whatsoever for Porzingis but I bet they can get a Horford swap cheaply as OKC minds nothing the next 2/3 yrs – Horford isnt the answer but Id rather have his contract/ability/leadership/steadiness than KP’s today
Yeah Dallas is in a bit of a quagmire with Luka. I think they can be dangerous, but it’s hard to see them seriously contending if Porzingis is going to be their second best player.
They’re going to have to get creative. Maybe they use their cap room on a guy like DeRozan and try to talk themselves into a (mini) big three? I don’t think it’s a homerun, but they probably have to take a swing at something this summer
Quagmire is a great word to describe them indeed
Just a gut feeling but I think they somehow move KP out clearing the salary to a bottom feeding team with cap/space (OKC?) who gets a draft pick attached
Def not a winning strategy but I think Cuban has just about seen enough of KP and figures the open cap can be better used down the road …. It might take an unprotected 1st just to get him gone sadly
KnickerbockerAI,
Take the W.
Don’t complain about “Tib’s minutes” (?)
That’s a non-sequitur and pseudo-problem.
Not complaining, just concerned. See all the players that have gone down this yr. I get winning, I still want to win with just 10-15 mins for other player, players.
Like Cap & Crunch said. 40 mins plus is the 80s lol.
Indeed. And only 5 minutes for IQ.
It’s a solid W, and Randle was rolling. But I feel like Thibs gets carried away sometimes.
Marc Berman: Knicks Looking to Sign Players Who Won’t Be Free Agents This Summer
Mavs are soft you got that right man. I’ve been saying it since they got KP. They need a physical 4 next to him. Then he is best as help defender cause of his size. And he can take the pounding away from him. Like they did for Dirk. Dirk wasn’t a physical guy. But was a great rebounder. KP gets pushed around too much. Dallas wants KP to work. You gotta get a physical 4 next to him. Plays D and rebounds. KP can still be a shot blocker from weak side. You have to look out for him on defensive end.
Nice to see Randle come home and have career night. He’s had a great run these last couple of gms. Gotta give it to him. He’s exceeded all my expectations. Love his toughness and dedication. Thibs and him were meant for each other.
Def…… in there defense maybe they thought James Johnson was that guy???
Noel would actually be a nice fit with them next year but I think there shooting bigger and trying to offload KP this offseason if possible
