Killian Hayes has missed most of his rookie season with a hip injury, but the Pistons believe he’ll be able to return for Saturday’s game against the Knicks, tweets James Edwards III of The Athletic.
Hayes has been making significant progress with the injury lately, although most estimates were for him to return sometime next week. He was cleared for on-court basketball activities in mid-March.
The seventh pick in last year’s draft, Hayes won the starting point guard job in training camp. He played just seven games, averaging 4.6 points and 3.6 assists in 21.1 minutes per night, before suffering a right hip subluxation.
Aside from that early-season glimpse, the 19-year-old remains something of a mystery to most North American basketball fans. He grew up in France and played a season in Germany before being drafted. He will presumably be worked back into a starting role so the Pistons can see what he’s capable of before this year’s draft.
Pistons can be hard to watch, but I’m interested in seeing Hayes. He was almost certainly going to be the Knicks pick last year if he fell to #8; although it was clear for a few weeks before the draft that Detroit was taking him unless they traded up for Williams (long shot).
The more they win the better Houston’s chances are of getting a top 4 pick, go Pistons.
That’s interesting so the Knicks wanted Hayes instead of Halliburton so the Knicks settled on Ob1.
I haven’t watched enough Knicks is Obi trash or does he just not get playing time?
Trash …… really. Why would anyone use that word to describe a Rookie. It takes yrs to be a bust. Even then you won’t be trash. You’ve been acting out with Marty too long lol. Randle, and Thibs wants to win. I think if they knew Randle would be this good. They would have taken Halliburton .
Haha I didn’t mean it to come off as a negative. Maybe should have phrased differently. Just curious how he’s been progressing because I don’t hear about him as much as some of the other rookies. Don’t get me wrong I’m rooting for him to be good.
Not really. Regardless of their finish, they’ll have a 48% chance of being bumped to Miami’s slot. Sad, considering they have one of the worst rosters in recent NBA history.
Ob1 definitely needs more PT.
I don’t know where Toppin was on the Knicks’ pre-draft board (other than he was obviously 8 or higher). About the only consistent story was they ranked the PGs in order Ball-Hayes-Haliburton, considering the latter more of combo (as did Sac), and they weren’t interested in trading up high enough for Ball. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have taken Haliburton at #8 if Toppin were gone, but I doubt it. It seemed like it was Hayes or go away from PG at #8 and pick one with their second 1st. I took trading from #27 to #23 as a concession that that Hayes was going to Detroit, and they needed to get as high as possible for one of the late 1st PGs (there were a bunch). At the time, I thought Maxey or Hampton, more than Quickley.
Pistons should go easy with Hayes. No need to rush him now. He’s the real deal imo. Be nice to see him play.
I agree they to be careful with him.
I think the Pistons want to see more of Hayes now before they possibly have the chance to draft Cade.
Even if they get #1 and get Cade him and Hayes can play together. Suggs and Hayes can play together too. Hayes is 6’5. Cavs r playing 2 6’2 guys together in the backcourt. U draft the best player when u have a crap roster and they will figure it out.
