Warriors center James Wiseman will undergo surgery on his right knee later this week, league sources tell Anthony Slater of The Athletic. The procedure is expected to take place as soon as Thursday, Slater adds.
Wiseman, who injured his right knee on Saturday, reportedly suffered a torn meniscus. The Warriors, who have spent the last few days getting multiple opinions on the injury and assessing the potential options, have decided that surgery is the way to go.
Although Wiseman will go under the knife, the exact nature of the procedure and his possible recovery timeline remain up in the air. As Slater explains, the surgeon likely won’t determine the best course of action until getting a clearer look at the tear during the procedure.
Trimming the meniscus is one option, which would result in about a four-to-six week recovery timetable. A full repair of the meniscus is also being considered and would mean several months of recovery time. The Warriors are comfortable with either approach, according to Slater, who says the rookie’s season is likely over either way, since the club wants to be cautious with the No. 2 overall pick.
In 39 games (21.4 MPG) this season, Wiseman averaged 11.5 PPG and 5.8 RPG on 51.9% shooting. In his absence, Kevon Looney has taken over as Golden State’s starting center. The team is also said to be mulling another frontcourt addition.
They should have moved him when they had the chance…
Why? Do you think he’s less valuable now because of a minor injury? It’s not like guys can’t come back from a turn miniscus…
MLBTR announced a mute user feature and I pray every day it comes here.
Well, they could have added a piece but Wiseman’s value has declined sharply since the deadline, not to mention he isn’t playing at all now. So that’s why.
At his best he’ll be peaking as Curry hits full decline. At his worst he is an injury-ridden draft bust that Warriors held on to too tightly. Which would you rather have? I’ll wait…
Curry at full decline??? That makes me laugh. He has had his best 7 game scoring streak of his career.
Yeah, this season. Wiseman is 2 or 3 seasons away IMO. Will Curry still be breaking records then? You really think he will go up from here?
I’ll wait…
Don’t listen to him. He clearly knows nothing
If you can’t see Wiseman is for Real … lol you need a name change. ( aka Veinticinco )
Real or not, He has still gone down in value. For GSW to fit Curry ‘s timetable, he could have traded as a future transcendent for an immediate contributor. There was talk of Beal, which would also have spared the team from finding a PG backup that could keep the team rolling. Sabonis averages 8 assists per100pos. When Miami signed Bam, the odds of that plan went down though.
Actually I can’t point to a center that would make a good Bogut- like trade that is plausible.
Leg joints stronger than usual will be Mobley’s advantage I think. If GSW can draft him which is possible… interesting.
Warriors need to Sign someone with SIZE now.
Don’t wait for the next injury to occur before taking action, as all new Players are subject to Clearing a few days of Covid testing before being allowed to take the court.
It’s irresponsible planning to NOT sign someone now and just assume that Draymond, Looney and Toscano-Anderson will stay healthy the rest of the Regular season.
As is, we have only 2 healthy players Taller than 6-foot-7 ( Looney & Smailagic ).
Will Looney’s body hold up under Increased minutes and workload? That seems unlikely to me. I am highly skeptical of his chronic Hips holding up.
What if Looney breaks down during the Last week of the Regular season and we haven’t Signed a new Big man yet? Are we going to ask Smailagic to guard Zion Williamson during the Play-in Tournament? Draymond might get into Foul trouble trying to guard that guy. JTA is also too small to try and guard that guy.
It’s all about matchups people.
We need someone to take up space and dish out 6 Fouls. It’s how the Celtics got past the Sixers using Aron Baynes on Joel Embiid a few years ago in the playoffs.
GSW would be top 4 today if they signed Baynes and JaVale like I kept telling them to. They lost so many games simply by a team stacking bigs against them.
I remember when you almost had a stroke. Cause I said Warriors better get a big. Try again
Someone listed the available FA bigs in another article – it’s not pretty.
No FA big is going to change GSW’s destiny if being 1st round fodder this year.
Yeah I hear Ya. But some us here were saying it when Chriss went down. That was a long time ago. He had a different take then
Hell years ago, after Bogut. Nobody physicalled the Cavs like GSW 2017. But Durant beating LJ took all the attention.
Remember when Marty said this guy was best in draft class?
He might end up being the best of the class of 2020 a few years from now. They need to start re-building around him and look to the future.
That’s great insight except it’s likely they trade him for a proven star in hopes curry will stay. Only way this legacy continues is if they somehow get kawhi
Oubre for Kawhi = haters mad
Keep holding your breath on that happening…..
MM doesn’t lie, he just self-deludes.
Because all star players are so their rookie years?
LaMelo is already a superstar, right?
So what is your point?
Remember when you looked dumb by writing this? He was/is. You saying an injury makes him a bad player? He’s looked incredible in stints this year, cant ask much more from an inexperienced 19 year old. Highest ceiling by far of that class.
Didnt like his fit for GS, which is why I talked about Ball, Okongwu, Vassell, and Okoro, and some other guys I thought would be there in the lower teens, although it felt like a lot of teams may have also been interested in trading back, and a guy like Patrick Williams going a bit earlier was also noteworthy. Again, I acknowledge his talent. He is skilled for his size. He is theoretically capable of certain things defensively. His biggest comp was Hassan Whiteside, which goes to show how skilled he is. I just felt like he has some, although not all, of other aspects of Whiteside; is someone that needs the ball in his hands to be effective offensively, which is an issue when you’re a blackhole AND turn the ball over, especially on a team like GS, and therefore isnt currently the best fit for a team like GS, at least if you think he is a starter. If they added certain low cost guys in FA, and brought him off the bench, and play larger minutes depending on matchup, as they did for a short while, that would have probably been fine, but I personally think you need to hit on a number 1 pick that makes you better from the beginning, especially if you were GS looking at continuing their run, and also considering the comparable long term fit, and/or long term potential of a couple of those guys…
All that being said, sucks to see him get hurt, especially since he hasnt had a chance to play much basketball the last couple of years. I hope he gets stronger, and comes back with the knowledge he learned from high basketball IQ players around him. As I said, I think he is very talented, and can theoretically be a very big deal if he improves in certain areas. I think his ability to put the ball on the floor is already a bit better than Whiteside, and I think he obviously has to have more motor. He is also more likely to be allowed to cultivate some of his skillset and use it more, like his outside shooting, which could become a big deal if he puts certain things together. I want to see him be more disciplined defensively, set better screens, pass the ball significantly more/learn to playmake from certain areas on the floor, and make better decisions. If he can do those things before he comes back, he is well on his way, and will be very valuable for them
The guy is 19 Y O and played all of 3 college games. He should be finishing up his college game this year and coming out now after leading Memphis to a championship. He came out too early and the Warriors knew he would be a project.
Going to be so great when Wiseman and Klay come back for the finals though, heartbreaking for the rest of yall, but magnificent for us GSW fans.
So they can watch the Finals on TV along with the rest of their teammates?
Big Warrior watch party. The arena all to themselves
Ngl Wally that made me laugh.
ANT be rookie of the year by default now.
with wiseman’s injury, i see it going to lamelo for sure.
Wiseman wasn’t even in the conversation.
Vegas has it very close, but going Edwards, Haliburton, Ball. link to vegasinsider.com
I bet on Haliburton before the year started..still alive..
Nah I think too many voters are aware of the adv #s that hate edwards
i think lamelo still has a good chance given he was head and shoulders above anyone else preinjury. if not then id bet halluburton
How are those Anta shoes working out in GS?
Why all the secrecy ?? Do t get it. Are they trying to scare the 9th seed. Shut the guy down. In retrospect, and I’m a big Wiseman guy. Warriors should of signed a big. Let Wiseman play 30 mins in G- league for half a season. Then bring him up. No SL no pre season work out. He could of learned it then. What’s 30-35 gms. He’s missed that this yr already. Don’t get why We Have to Play 19 yr olds. 98% of them are not ready.
he could have been injured in the g league — and theyre probably going to *at least* explore trading him this offseason. putting him in the G is no good for a #2 pick’s value
Who cares about value when you are building a team. I have him come back twice as good. The guy only has to rebound and play the middle on D this yr. Kobe didn’t show until his third yr. His size is all you need. You don’t need him to score. You learn one step at a time. You think you walk in and play in NBA. Edwards the ROY wasn’t doing much the first half. He’s killing it now. And only cause he is already NBA size. Wiseman won’t lose his value for 4 yrs. And that’s an impossibility. Nobody walks in his first yr and wins. Unless you are MAGIC. And he came in after 2 yrs in college. Bron probably best 19 yr old Ever.
His Team was 35 – 47. His stats 40 mins, 20 pts a gm
No 19 yr old comes in and takes over. Not even Zion. Not even Moses.
in a normal circumstance i would agree but gsw isnt building a team. they have maybe 2-3 years left to build around curry. so ideally wiseman is either:
a) a immediate star who can help them win now w/curry
or
b) a potential future star they can flip for a current star who can help them win now w/ curry
I would be surprised to see Wiseman on this roster next season. I think he could be a really good player, but given what GSW saw this year IDK how you would think adding Klay to this roster puts them anywhere near contending.
Adding a top 5 defender makes Wiseman a better players. Thompson is a better defender than anyone on the team than maybe Green.
Wiseman is plenty good, just inexperienced and Kerr not bending even a bit to help him develop, hurt him this season. At least Kerr understands to PNR now. If he ran PNRs from day one, Wiseman would be a ROY frontrunner.
That’s “Wise Man”. No pun intended
Warrior challenges:
1) Mgmt that drafted Steph, Klay, Dray was allowed to move on; replaced by the two sons of the majority owner. Drafting, Wiseman aside, has been spotty at best.
2) Willingness to outspend the league by mountains doesn’t guarantee the best players. For months, Dubs pundits tried to talk acquiring Giannis into existence. Reality is they bought Durant for a few years and that’s it.
3) The TWolves pick is top three protected. If the pick falls to the Dubs they get a player that is developmental to some degree. That also leads back to point 1 above.
Light Years away from the next Title….
That’s why I say they would willingly trade all those young assets for a stud veteran or two. Wisesman, the Minnesota pick, their own pick.
But the problem is, who’s available? Giannis re-signed, Butler is locked in Miami, and Bradley Beal is going nowhere from what we hear. Trying to find that guy who’s available is the challenge.
We’ll see how it plays out but Curry and Thompson and green can’t wait three years for a few young guys to develop.
So do you try to bring in a Tobias Harris type player who is a marginal All-Star guy? Maybe a Lonzo? Are a couple guys like that enough to get you over the hump? Fingers crossed it all works out.
howabout Vucevic? Hm…
Yeah Vucevic be one of those guys. But he was are available from Orlando and the Warriors didn’t jump on that? Perhaps Chicago wants to keep him now? But yes that’s a good name.. someone like that.
You proved that you are a casual by thinking the #4 pick will be developmental. Pay attention: there’s at least 15 NBA instant stars in this draft. It’s the most loaded draft ever. Learn before speak.
I hope so Marty. If we don’t trade that stuff away maybe a Jalen Suggs who looks amazing can be plugged right in. That would be awesome and the Warriors would be right back even though the guy’s a rookie.
To Marty’s point, a returning Wiseman, Klay, another top draft pick, and a trade of Wiggins for a better-fitting piece, plus a better-constructed bench than the car wreck Myers put out there this year make 2022 look a lot different for the Warriors.
It would be better if Jerry West and Larry Riley were making those decisions, but even Myers can do better next year.
Your lectures means zero…
What do they get you, some sense of satisfaction?
I saw the list and wrote…
Zero…
