Celtics forward Jaylen Brown is out for the season due to a torn ligament in his left wrist, the team announced (via Twitter).
The diagnosis was made over the weekend. He has a torn scapholunate ligament and is expected to have it surgically repaired later this week.
The injury is a devastating blow to a team that has been a disappointment this season. The Celtics entered the week with a mediocre 35-33 record despite an outstanding season from the fifth-year forward. He’s averaging a career-high 24.7 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 3.4 APG in the first year of a four-year extension that can be worth up to $115MM.
Brown has been sidelined since May 2. According to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the injury is not a new one and he’s been dealing with lingering pain (Twitter link).
Boston has dropped two of its last three games with Brown on the shelf. Without him, the Celtics have relied on Evan Fournier and Aaron Nesmith to pick up his minutes.
Boston sits in the seventh spot entering the final week of action and will wind up in the play-in tournament unless it can pass Atlanta, Miami or New York.
It takes 6 weeks to recover.
Brown should be ready in the nba Finals but ….
Sadly this team was going nowhere anyway. Until this group learns to share the ball and play defense, they will not be a factor. For players who handle the ball as much as Brown and Tatum, 3 assists a game is pathetic. LeBron, Harden, Gianis, Curry, Butler, Embid and many others pass more frequently.
I remember when people used to love calling Harden a ball-hog even though he has averaged a little above 9 assists per game over the last five seasons.
there’s really not much else you can do with less than five seconds left but shoot the ball after harden finally gives it up.
yea, someone didn’t watch Nets basketball this year lol
He is a ball hog. Only gives it up when he wants to. And he’s trying to impress Ky n KD. He will revert to IsoHar en soon. You know he wants the glory of Nets win. Nets are not winning this yr. Cause they don’t play D. And Harden is the no D star.
Teammates of Harden historically have had two options – sit back and watch him shoot, or get a pass from him with a few seconds on the clock and put a shot up.
Does really good for Hardens point and assist numbers.
No kidding. Wasnt he leading the league for a good chunk of this season?
Westbrook, beal etc cough cough
Lol hard to do anything but laugh at this point.
So now they lose their best player…this team just never could get going consistently enough b/c of all the poor rotation decisions and changes all season. They have enough versatility to at least be ok, but chances are, they wont use those guys correctly anyway.
Potentially good news for the 8, 9, and/or 10 seeds.
And the injuries keep coming. Too bad for Jalen. Celts now in play in gm. Knicks hanging tough for 4th seed. Get well Jalen always next yr bro. Celtics year is about right. They made the wrong pickups. And just seem lost this yr. I thought they were a contender coming in.
Season was probably done anyway in terms of any hope of actually contending
But this does make it official that Ainge choosing the trade exception over Turner and McDermott in the Hayward drama will go down as a loss.
Now they have a rental of Fournier for a playoff run that’s already non-existent instead of young depth in the middle and on the wing
Yes, season was done.
Still don’t buy Myles Turner trade as a loss. What’s he doing right now? They needed Brown healthy either way, and now they didn’t give anything up for nothing.
As for Fournier, they got him for pretty much nothing anyway. Nothing to sweat there.
Not sure how hard/lenient we should be around covid stuff. It impacted Celtics but it also impacted everyone. Lot of injuries this year. If Cs get a slow start next season I’m ready to put Brad in the hot seat. Still fine with Ainge. It’s like Pats fans complaining about Belichek. Give me a break.
They never replaced Horford. And the they did mismanaged the Hayward thing. You have to wonder. Cause they were willing to pay Hayward after injury and wait. But were not willing to pay Horford and compete. Horford would have took Less to stay lol. Just idiotic to me.
I’m not the biggest fan of Turner either, and maybe if Bob Williams continues to play well it’ll be a moot point. But given their depth issues I just thought Turner and McDermott would have been good fits next to J&J. Rim protection and shooting to round out the rotation.
Instead they get Fournier who’s pretty good, I just don’t know if they’ll be able to afford to resign him
Everyone keeps talking about the Indiana trade as if Heyward didn’t take the money down in Charlotte over a sign and trade to Indiana.. Lol.. AGAIN, Heyward wanted the $120mil contract over what Indiana was offering… Didn’t matter what the C’s did or didn’t do… You can’t sign and trade a player that didn’t want to sign.
Celtics have been messing up. Before the Hayward thing. Seems to me like they are Cheap lol
By most accounts I’ve heard/read the Turner / McDermott offer was on the table as a S+T for Hayward and Hayward was ready to sign in Indy. In fact Indy was his preference as that’s where he’s from. But since Indy didn’t have cap room it needed to be a S+T.
But Danny kept balking and eventually Charlotte came in with a godfather offer which Hayward understandably took. The trade exception was negotiated after the fact, not sure why, as Hayward could have just signed outright.
Espn was probably involved somehow. A complicated deal needs actions to take place in a certain sequence but espn is always racing to be first to break news, no matter what they upset.
Had a great season it a shame. Hopefully he make a speedy recovery.
