The Clippers insist they’re not worried about their current predicament, even though they’re halfway to a first-round loss that could be franchise altering, writes Mirjam Swanson of The Orange County Register. Calmness was the message repeated by players and coaches after dropping two games to Dallas on their home court.
“No worries,” guard Reggie Jackson said today in a Zoom session with reporters, echoing the sentiments of his coach, Tyronn Lue, who stated, “I’m not concerned.” Although the Clippers remain confident, they may be stuck with a bad matchup. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George having to supply so much of the team’s offense, it’s difficult for them to also guard Luka Doncic, who is averaging 35.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 9.0 assists in the first two games of the series.
“They feed off it tremendously,” Jackson said. “When (Doncic) looks like he’s having fun, they’re all cool, calm and collected. We’ve got to figure out a way to rattle him, rattle the head of the snake first and then let everybody else kind of get rattled as well.”
There’s more from L.A.:
- John Hollinger of The Athletic considers possible steps that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer might take if the team is eliminated in the first round. Those could include front office changes, trying to trade for a rim protector or possibly dealing George. The team also faces the prospect of losing Leonard, who is expected to opt out of his contract this summer.
- After a disappointing Game 1 performance, the Lakers‘ Anthony Davis made a statement with 34 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in the Game 2 win over the Suns. Davis’ outburst began with a spirited practice session Monday, according to Chris Haynes of The Athletic. “We knew AD was locked in and we expected this performance,” Jared Dudley said. “You could see it in him these last few days.”
- The Lakers also got a lift from Dennis Schröder and Andre Drummond, who will both be free agents this summer, writes Broderick Turner of The Los Angeles Times. Schroder poured in 24 points, while Drummond contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds. “Dennis was in attack mode from the very beginning,” LeBron James said. “… And I thought big Dre was amazing in the minutes he had. … He was just very decisive with his play tonight and I think it’s his sixth playoff game, maybe six or seven, that he’s had in his career, so he’s going to continue to get better and better.”
I’d imagine clips would fire lou should they get bounced by mavs. Kawhi is also gone and the clippers will return to obscurity. Clippers will be stuck with pandemic p and no picks for next 5 years. Yikes.
That’s what happens when you mortgage the future of your franchise on a player like Paul George. At least they’re used to failure.
ESPN future power rankings
2 Clippers
3 Lakers
27 Rockets
29 Wolves
Rockets and Wolves GMs declared that they are exciting about their future
Why?
If Kawhi signs new contract with Knicks in summer, Clippers future are still at 2?
If the teams trade away all future picks, future is bright?
Right, those guys at ESPN are never wrong. The Clippers are no more a top 2 team over the next few years than the Rockets are bottom 4. If Houston keeps their lottery pick, you better look out.
Picks alone will not get it done
He did the Lakers a favor.
Teams don’t learn. Well some do. Remember when Miami won their first chip? The next year Wade got hurt, the supporting cast was old as most of them were older anyway. It took them 6 years after the first chip to win another. They learned to mold their team off of depth and not just trade assets like they did(traded Odom,Brian Grant,Caron Butler etc for Shaq). Best warriors team had depth, same for the best teams Kawhi has been on. Both the 2014 spurs and 2019 raps all had depth. This clippers squad has zero others. Only Kawhi and PG and nobody else who can consistently get a bucket and get a stop.
Losing to Dallas shouldn’t be franchise altering, especially if you take into consideration the history of the Clippers. Even their Big 3 of Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and CP3 never got past round two. And it’s looking the same with Paul George, Kawhi, and the rest as they struggle just to reach the second round.
Do you feel how sound your logic is when youre talking about someone other than LeBron, Lakers or Warriors?)
Clippers really put up billboards in summer 2019 like they were the grit team and the Lakers were all flash. No wonder they are a joke of a franchise.
They sure did! But by 21 they’ve all but disappeared
There is No lasting LOve for Clippers in La
Paper Clips deserve going out early for not facing tampering charges in the Kawai signing. Ballmer will clean out everyone. The irony in all this … New Clips gm .. no other than M.Ujiri.
But clippers have dog in them. Lol
Getting Drummond this late is just not right. I know NBA is helping Lakers. But Chris not 100% is gonna take it’s toll. Suns are not winning without Chris playing well.
Isn’t Batum a D guy. Why isn’t he on Doncic. Even Reggie should be on him. Kawhi should be more focused on offense. He can guard him in last 3 mins. But you can’t burn him out early. To me Lue is weak link here. I mean you know who Mavs are ????
Don’t You lol …. wake TFU
Normally I agree with you Al but here I cannot. Kawhi is supposed to be an elite defender. If he can’t get it done there are bigger problems, and I don’t think Batum is solving them. He is a nice to have not a cornerstone.
As for Drummond…come on. You gonna get upset over a role player? These guys are getting bought out for a reason. What, Pistons should have had a shot at him? Is he the difference maker for the Knicks? It’s freakin Andre Drummond! Not worth the trouble IMO, but you are entitled to yours.
I agree in part with both of you.
Batum can’t guard Luka. But he’s probably less of a liability on a switch than Beverly and Zubac, who are both swiss cheese in a PnR with Luka. Batum and Mann need to play more in gm3 if Lue has even 1/2 a brain
The issue for Kawhi defensively in LAC, ironically, starts on the offensive end. He has no Lowry to make his life easier, so now he’s basically splitting Point Forward duties w/ George AND being asked to shut down Luka. Not sure that’s palatable.
And for every minute Drummond has looked good, there have been 3 he’s looked horrendous. There was a reason LAL went with Gasol down the stretch.
Honestly with Drummond I think he’s the type of guy you need on your team to Really see who he is… You’ll get in a lot of trouble looking at box scores with that guy
I thought he was good as well 3 months ago… Al seems to like high IQ players…I think Drum would give him a heart attack by game 10 in a Knicks uniform
Al likes anyone big, or ranked & young.
I have never heard Drummond called smart.
Two different things for Finals MVPs
1
Trade away
Warriors trade away MVP Durant and MVP Iguodala and two future Firsts for overpay bum Russell
2
Walk away
MVP Kawhi walk away from Raptors
And Walk away again?
Kevin Durant was essentially a walk away as well. He did not want to return to the Warriors. Andre Iguodala reached the end of the line. He could barely play three-quarters of a regular season. They had to sit him and save him for the playoffs. He was done. Miami took him because Heat thought he was great for that mentor role, that playoff MVP role, to show the young guys how to get it done.
As far as Kawhi Leonard, who knows what he’s thinking. He might stay because he loves being “home.” Do the Clippers trade Paul George instead as everyone is suggesting? Maybe. But the Clippers have all their eggs in THIS basket. No draft picks and no cap room. They’re in a tight spot, and if they don’t beat Dallas, wow they are hurting.
Does Kawhi leave if they get bounced again?
Well he isn’t the most loyal guy. He’s a quiet me first guy.
Compare the flack he got for what he did in San Antonio, which went on basically an entire season, to the flack Harden got this year.
Also: how many guys have left a team they just won a championship with to create a super-team in a destination market? In any sport.
Disclosure: I’m *not* defending Harden here. He deserved the flack he got.
Clippers need to learn from Warriors
Warriors Trade 2021 fake first round pick to Nets for Russell
Warriors Trade 2021 fake first round pick to Thunder for Oubre
Same pick was traded two times already
They could also learn from the Rockets who traded a 2024 fake second round pick (Warriors top-55 protected) to the Cavs for Kevin Porter.
You’re already counting on Kevin Porter to be a player and legitimate contributor to the Rockets next year? Don’t hold your breath.
If history tells us anything then you may want to hold judgment for two years of consistent contribution on and off the floor.
Fingers crossed he puts it together, I only hope the best for the young man, but this is a case of “show me first.”
I thought Ibaka would be a big reason the Clippers could hold off Dallas in a long series, after I originally picked Dallas to beat them before the season, but for some reason, he hasnt played, and i dont understand why. Not the only situation like that in these playoffs, but one that definitely sticks out as more than questionable.
Lakers need to bench Drummond, and stick with Gasol and Anthony Davis at the 5. Obviously, Chris Paul being hurt is a big deal, but Phoenox would be up 2-0 if Crowder didnt take a shot to the groin. I picked Phoenix, but the Lakers can matchup with them if they play the right guys
As much as I want them to beat the evil empire, Phoenix has no bench. Did everyone see Saric run around with his head cut off last game. Cameron Payne’s deal with the devil is running overdue .. well past its expiry date.
Phoenix has a lot of depth. I would question if Javon Carter or Langston Galloway should potentially play in this series, and maybe Kaminsky instead of Saric. The Lakers do have the depth at the 4, and the size to matchup with them, but barring LeBron and/or Davis going super off and single handedly carrying, Phoenix has all the tools to win. J thought they were kind of similar to Utah and Denver as well, but have them slightly edging those teams out. All of that was always assuming health, of course, which is obviously a question now for Chris Paul
Payne has always been smart and quick and best for the highest level. Nobody gets showcased positively in Chicago or Cleveland.
Odd that HC wanted a one-armed player over decent backups.
I knew Ibaka wouldn’t matter. He went to the clippers to have an easy ride. I can’t respect that. Nobody even remembers him now in a uniform other than the raptors. That’s on him.
I always view him as OG Thunder
Agree. Drummond destroys their spacing and with LeBron hobbled they really don’t have the luxury of waiting around to integrate him properly.
With Ibaka I have to think he’s probably still hurt? I mean, I don’t see how you play him just 5 mins while giving extended time to Beverly and Zubac and literally everyone else they have who are substantially worse than Serge.
PG is getting traded to the runner up in the Beal sweepstakes… maybe LAC and Boston can figure out something around PG for Kemba and (Smart? Timelord?)..?
why would boston want another wing player lol. marcus smart would be nice on the clippers though. maybe a three team deal
Wonder what Chris Paul could have accomplished if he didn’t break down every postseason.
Or if a certain bearded person didnt make him stand in the corner, watching him dribble, like a glorified Patrick beverly
Kawhi to Miami, I posted it here a month ago
Kawhi to NY.
Am I biased? 100%.
Is it likely? Probably not.
But does it make sense? If he actually wants to win, I would argue that yes it does.
It might make even more than Miami, assuming NY can sign him outright without giving up any assets.
When Kawhi thought leaving an ideal situation to team with PG was logical. Then Luka snapped him back to reality. Clippers have dog in them and are again on the brink of underachieving? At least Terrence Mann has improved though!
Dont wanna see Ad smile rest of playoffs
Lakers need Hungry AD not Hollywood AD … you could tell within 3 mins of the game this was a different animal
I never liked the Clips or their stars and have not seen them postseason yet. But I thought they improved their attitude and would be something this playoff. Earlier their defense was terrific and they were poised hitting 3s.
Maybe Doncic has the right kind of teammates after all.
Agree w/ you 100% on Clips, and for that reason I think this series is more about them than the Mavs.
I still think that Luka/KP pairing is dubious if they’re going to contend for a title. Porzingis is basically a rich man’s Doug McDermott at this point, and I’m not sure how much more development he’s going to show us.
Talent and team are two different things. Rondo needs to start to set the tone. Luka is a winner and it will be hard to win 4 of 5 for the Clips.,
Clipps are out, it would take almost a miracle for them to come back & win, in 75 years only 4 teams have done that after losing the first 2 games at home… & when the best player in the series plays for DAL… well I mean how silly you gotta be to think LAC can win?
Paul George is a choker. Leonard became complacent….when these guys went public and wanted to quit the bubble….that showed they have no heart….not tough. Lou Williams was best clutch shooter. Rondo can’t shoot. Screwy Lue leaves his best shooter on bench. Ballmer has a big problem.
Clippers are like a refurbished Microsoft computer. Concept works on paper but is usually faulty just like the team.
Kind of like this analogy lol
Why would a refurbished computer be faulty? If it is, it isn’t refurbished; it’s broken.
The Clips have many issues, and none of them are going to be resolved before this series is over. Lue had an entire season to work on them (and a great template left by his predecessor of how not to coach this team). Nothing. Instead, he defined himself as the solution to all problems, thus eliminating the need to explore any. I’ve graded his coaching performance a “D” until now, but this “I’m not concerned” stuff takes it to a “D-“. Too many coaches like him in the league, combination front man and fall guy, but without a clue as to what being a HC involves.
Hm if they win the next game does all this go away?
No
