Kelly Oubre‘s willingness to accept a reserve role may determine his decision in free agency this summer, writes Kendra Andrews of NBC Sports Bay Area. In his end-of-season press conference this week, Warriors coach Steve Kerr indicated that Oubre would be used as a sixth man if he returns to the team next season.
“(Klay Thompson)’s going to start when he gets back. So would Kelly be interested in coming off the bench? That’s a question only he can answer,” Kerr said. “So he’ll weigh his options, we’ll weigh ours and we’ll see where it all goes.”
Golden State traded for Oubre in November to help fill the vacancy left when Thompson tore his Achilles. Oubre had an up-and-down season, but he averaged 15.4 points and 6.0 rebounds and would be a dangerous weapon off the bench if the Warriors can keep him.
There’s more on the Warriors:
- Kerr expects Thompson’s return to be a memorable moment for both him and the fans, relays Jon Becker of The San Jose Mercury News. In a radio interview this week, Kerr said having Thompson back after missing two years with injuries will be a boost to the entire organization. “Everyone loves Klay. He’s such a breath of fresh air. He’s so much fun to be around,” Kerr said. “And then the fact that when we walk into camp for the first time, it’s all together with Klay being on the court with the rest of the guys in training camp. That means everybody’s spirits will be higher, including mine.”
- James Wiseman‘s meniscus surgery last month forced the team to delay a plan to have him work out with Kevin Garnett over the summer, according to Drew Shiller of NBC Sports Bay Area. The Warriors don’t expect to issue an official update on Wiseman’s condition until September, and they hope he will be ready for the start of training camp. “KG is pretty unique — on the court and what he brings and the mentality,” president of basketball operations Bob Myers said. “Exposing James to a guy like that (would be great). We (also) talked to David West and we were gonna get something going with him. So we have these people in mind that we think can really be helpful.”
- Stephen Curry, who will be eligible for a four-year, $215.4MM extension starting in August, deserves to be a Warrior for life, Poole contends in a separate story.
KG? What would KG teach – how to scowl and beat your chest?
Send Wiseman down to Texas, get some time with the Dream.
The Dream comes later when you want to refine your game. James Wiseman has no game right now and needs Kevin Garnett to teach him to be an NBA big man.
Footwork, pivots, the Dream practically has patents on these (helps that he had a football background).
KG does too, but his game is predicated on having hops ……. also, KG doesn’t seem to be the teaching kind, he might destroy Wiseman’s fragile psyche the first day.
Wiseman is a ground-based big, that David West gig should work also.
David West, back when the Warriors had depth before KD.
You and Marty have a weird obsession with the Warriors.
How is Wiseman’s psyche fragile?
Nah. Hakeem didn’t invent those moves. He learned it from Pete Newell. Pete taught everyone.
KG used to come to Milwaukee a few times a year when Kidd was the Bucks coach. He was brought in to help Giannis refine his skills. I’d say it helped some.
Wiseman should be viewed as a big the same way KD is – its so off-base to think KG and Hakeem would help Wiseman benefit GSW the most.
All he has to do is shoot 3’s and slash the lane, which he can do from the 3 point line. He doesn’t need to be a physical brawler type, GSW is blowing it with him in every imaginable way, SMH
@mike.honcho – Wiseman is 19, I hope you didnt write “fragile psyche” as if its a bad thing, you really shouldnt have written it at all. Just proves you’re a sheep to dumb media writers looking for drama in anything.
Wiseman doesn’t need the Dream. He just needs to go through the same growth process that the Dream went through. Have you ever followed Warriors Basketball.
Wiseman will be lucky to be 1/10th the player Hakeem was.
WallyWorld, your hatred of the Warriors is acknowledged. I know you are trying to revive your reputation. But, you failed last season. You said that Steph Curry would suffer chronic ankle injuries in the 20/21 season. Of course he had the best season of his career. Your estimation of Klay Thompson is dubious, for obvious reasons.
KG and David West, both great players, but completely different personalities…I’m interested to hear what they end up doing this summer
If Warriors make a trade to acquire any star
The centerpiece of the deal is Wiseman and Wolves pick
Posters on this forum pretended that they did not know
Great, another off-season of this.
The Warriors don’t need a star. Klay is coming back. He is far better than any player you could acquire when you are dangling Wiseman and a pick. Besides, you are selling low on Wiseman. He won’t have trade value for another 2 seasons. The Warriors need depth. They found a veteran presence at PG. Poole will add depth at the 2, and Jessup could add further depth at the 2 and 3 positions. Adding a veteran big behind Wiseman, like David West, would give a much better rotation.
Props to Kerr for telling it like it is and being up front about Oubre. Refreshing.
It is not the first time Kerr has said this. They have been saying this for the past couple of months.
IMHO, Wiseman could use some tutelage from HOF KG and hopefully future HOF David West. David West had a great career even if he didn’t win any rings before he joined the Warriors.
To put David West and Kevin Garnett in the same discussion about teaching is preposterous. West should be running a team; Garnett is just lucky he was so tall. How would he teach skill?
Myers is an idiot. Lucky, like KG.
What are you talking about? You destroy any credibility you may have had with bizarre statements like this.
KG is a defensive genius. Yea he screamed and was animated but one of the highest BBIQs ever. Also his midrange jumper and turnaround were primary offensive weapons. Very skilled and certainly not lucky.
If Garnett was smart it was in dirty play, stuff he could not have gotten away with if he was a little smaller or not as rugged. What would he teach to a less physical player?— all he had was pointy illegal picks and short jumpers.
Wiseman is not his type; he could regress under KG, trying to be something he’s not. The young millionaire would probably blow him off, if KG didn’t get bored first.
Some probably think, KG would make a man outta him. What crap… not how it works. Rooks hate warhorses. David West would be plenty to deal with, and he had tricks too. But he had to come from nowhere… KG was picked high out of HS… no college.
What are you talking about jbl. I made about five points you could object to. You only advance lack of thought and probably some idol-worship. Hard for me to respond to nothingness.
If you want to say KG would be a good teacher because he was a good practitioner then you do not know what makes a teacher special. Are you aware most top athletes make crappy coaches? Maybe you’re one who thought MJordan had to be a good baseball player or BB coach because he was so good at playing BB.
KG wasn’t even a center.
Did KG play a Kerr/GSW style of basketball?— no the opposite.
It’d be worth spending time with kg this summer. Remember Kevin Garnett was pretty good on defense and perhaps another voice explaining positioning and little nuances of help defense and that stuff could click with James Wiseman. Probably the same stuff he’s already heard but phrased a different way?
On offense kg could also explain the little ins and outs of positioning and the mid-range jump shot and when to drive when to shoot Etc. Sometimes the same thing said a different way by a different guy may help it click? Just a few days with Garnett would definitely help in my opinion.
No no no no, Wiseman needs to be taught how to shoot 3’s as a big man, not be a dumb 90s style physical big man – but also, Wiseman IS NOT A CENTER. STOP TRYING TO MAKE HIM ONE. He needs to be viewed as KD2, not KG or Hakeem.
I wouldn’t mind the Warriors drafting that 7 footer in the draft this year. Slowly move Wiseman to PF spot. Wiseman may be too thin for center position. PF he could be a KD type PF if his shoot keeps improving.
I hear you guys cuz he’s young and can run and he’s very mobile and has skills.. BUT he doesn’t have the HANDLES needed for a KD type. I don’t see him dribbling the Rock too much.. or taking a guy off the dribble while facing the basket. I think he’s more a center than a forward.
What James Wiseman needs to do is play like Joel embiid. Play center, shoot some threes, but be an offensive threat downlow also with the little hook shots and step-backs and all that stuff. That’s his Target. I wouldn’t put Joel embiid on the wing as a four. He’s a center and so is James Wiseman.
But I see what you guys are saying… maybe he can learn that stuff but then we’re talking about 2 years down the road again. Curry will be 36. I say the best answer for the Golden State Warriors is trade him for a stud. Put him in a package with the minny pick and the Warrior pick.
Suggested trade on knbr: Wiseman and the 2 lottery picks to Houston for their 1st and Christian Wood. IMO, Houston says no way, but obviously lottery results could change their mind. Gary, your opinion please.
That works for the Warriors of course because you get an established guy somewhat in Christian Wood. You sort of know what he brings and then the top three or so pick could bring in one of those Superstars.
From the rockets viewpoint you get James Wiseman, who will be someone in two or three years that’s granted. Then you get two young guys to plug in number 6 and number 14. The only way the Rockets say “no” is if they have their sights set on a top-four guy and they think they could get an All-Star.
So the choice for Houston is the all-star or two good pro’s. Not sure what Houston would decide on that.. but I know fans will say no way because they don’t think James Wiseman is very good. Well Christian Wood wasn’t very good his first three or so years either.
Houston first being lottery pick
Yes despite what many are saying in the comment sections here, James Wiseman is on the table to be dealt. Warriors can’t wait three years that’s the bottom line.
Whatever they do and whoever he gets traded to, it better be for a veteran or in this Houston scenario the Warriors would pick maybe Jalen Suggs who you can plug in right away and he’ll be successful. You won’t have to wait 3 years with suggs or a couple of these guys.
Standing Pat and plugging in the Florida guy at number six and kispert from Gonzaga at 14 is not a championship contender.
