Warriors star Stephen Curry will be entering a contract year in 2021/22, but he’ll be eligible to sign an extension once the new league year begins in August. And Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers told reporters today that he’s “pretty confident” the two sides will get something done, as Anthony Slater of The Athletic tweets.
Curry is earning a $45.78MM salary next season. Because that amount is technically over the maximum salary, he could only get a 5% raise for the first year of an extension, rather than the usual 20% that veterans are eligible for. Still, that would put him in line for a maximum extension worth a staggering $215MM over four years on a deal that would cover his age 34-37 seasons. It remains to be seen if the Warriors will go quite that high, but after the season Curry just had, the team isn’t likely to low-ball him.
Myers also told reporters today that Curry’s impressive run down the stretch of the 2020/21 season occurred despite a hairline fracture in his tailbone.
“Small hairline, but as I’ve been told the pain was coming more from a contusion,” Myers said (Twitter link via Slater).
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- According to Slater (Twitter link), Myers sounded skeptical today that Klay Thompson will be ready to go by opening night in 2021/22. Thompson’s Achilles tear occurred last November, so he won’t be a full year removed from the injury by the time the season starts, says Slater, noting that the idea is to ease the veteran swingman back into action.
- Myers said the hope is for James Wiseman to be recovered from his knee surgery in time for training camp, adding that he expects the big man to be on the team next season and doesn’t want to trade him. “I think he can be helpful in the future and in the present,” Myers said of 2020’s No. 2 overall pick (Twitter links via Slater).
- Myers said today that he believes the Warriors’ roster is in need of more veterans (Twitter link via Slater). When asked about specific team needs, Myers mentioned a floor-spacing big man, a play-making guard, and more shooting, noting that he’d like any free agent additions to have some playoff experience (Twitter links via Wes Goldberg of The San Jose Mercury News and Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area).
- Addressing Kelly Oubre‘s free agency, Myers said he hopes the veteran forward is back and said Oubre has made it clear “he’d like to be here.” However, Myers cautioned that he can’t predict what the market will look like and added that Oubre would have to be comfortable with a bench role (Twitter links via Slater and ESPN’s Nick Friedell).
Called warriors demise before the beginning of the season. Warriors would be lucky to make playoffs. Projected them a 9th seed….guess what? Caught flak from Marty and arc but now there nowhere to be found. Ironic. This team is finished. Curry will carry this trash one more year and then is gonna ring chase with another team.
Lol if you made the prediction before Klay got hurt you were wrong (a healthy klay makes them an easy playoff team) and if you predicted it after the injury that was pretty normal, nobody expected them to contend once he was injured. Comments like these are baffling.
Well seeing as klay was injured in offseason reading helps kid. No one else seemed to think warriors would miss playoffs because of curry greatness
lmao everyone expected warriors to miss playoffs
Everyone with a brain expected it.
Poor Warriors fans are stuck in the past.
Curry, Lebron and AD?
I like it.
Every basketball player wants to wear the purple and gold, at one point in their careers.
I guess Curry is next.
They all want their jersey retired next to Kareem, Wilt, West, Magic, Shaq, Kobe, Elgin.
lol theres a bigger chance Kawhi going to Warriors than Curry going to the Lakers
Amazing!
Isn’t ring chasing for people who weren’t already in a championship dynasty? He only has to chase into his own trophy room to find three championship rings and two mob trophies (so far).
You called it LOL. Show receipts. Any other year they are in the playoffs as the 8th seed so give it up bud.
you said they wouldn’t make the play-in just a lottery team. Just quoting you. You also claimed the Lakers would be a #1 seed. So you were wrong again. Now you pretend to have made these other claims. next year let’s see you put everything in writing instead of pretending you said this or that.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been a bit on Keith Appling
He never played for the Warriors, so why would he be mentioned here.
Did I say specifically here? At all.
You should ask the people who run the site. It is dedicated to the NBA. He was a star in College. He never really played in the NBA. So, he is not relevant to this site.
Why Appling? The WSU guy?— somebody promise him something they should not have?
Pretty much everyone on this board had Warriors 7-10 seed preseason …It was almost 95% …You didn’t call anything …Give it 30 mins and Im sure your troll will be answered by said folk
The warriors are just fine moving forward…they managed to keep the chains moving with the KD/IGGy/ DeAngelo Russell flips just enough to keep this powerhouse afloat-
Pretty damn admirable if you take a 7-8 yr look at what GSW has done w the books – Quit hating Tats and stop being so short-sighted
He didn’t even have warriors in the play-in. He had them as a lottery pick team. He also said the Lakers would be the #1 team. the only teams that surprised me this year in the west in the Suns better than I thought they would be and Memphis I didn’t think would make the playoffs. As much as the media wants to pretend there is a dominating team there are about 6 or 7 teams that could be champs this year. its wide open.
I think its pretty well known in the inner circles this years completely up for grabs –
I had 11 teams I thought could win it this year at the beginning – 7 from West 4 from East – GSW was in the next tier of teams …
All 11 made playoffs, I still think 10 of them can win it all but Im withdrawing my Dallas confidence today.
Great playoffs in store with some already great ones banked *inc the 2 GSW gave us early
i been picking Utah but they need their best player on the court. I can’t figure out the Clippers they should be better than what they are playing. I am not sold on the Nets. KD doesn’t seem as intimidating this year. Teams better not over look Portland because they are playing with a attitude this year.
If Warriors trade Wiseman and 2 picks
7 teams playoffs lock
Current top 6 and Warriors
Curry got a crack in his crack
Me all year: “GSW running another 5 finals appearances starting next year and possibly this year”. They finished a hail mary Lebron shot away from roasting the overrated Jazz in the first round, just like the Grizzlies are.
Not to mention playing 8 players all year. GSW had an incredible run, easily the best part of the season. They don’t even have to make the playoffs to prove they are about to annihilate the league next year. Steph. Curry. Is. Better.
Myers saying numerous FA’s told him no after Klay’s injury, but they would have signed if he didn’t get hurt. GSW was so close, yet so far this year. They won’t be next year or any upcoming years as long as Steph keeps pushing his prime closer to 40 and being the best player in the league.
Isn’t it funny how the trolls come out once warriors lost. Tats was AWOL for a while not wants to brag on something he pretended to say. a lot of people didn’t see that the Warriors was down 3 of their regular rotation players not counting Thompson. How many teams could win with 3 starters out for the playoffs?
Marty said 5 years including this year, last year. Then he moved it back b/c, wrong again. He says whatever is good for his pretend-lover Curry.
GSW still should be in this thing, they literally came one play away from it in both games. Borderline A’s-level postseason luck, smh.
Thompson’s was injured in mid-late November, so he will be considerably less than one year removed from it when the next season begins. It’s not just skeptical to think he won’t be ready when the season starts, it’s realistic. Only the most irrational of Warriors fans are under the impression that Klay will be 100% and ready to go opening night in October. His prognosis should be similar to what happened with John Wall last season, and if anything even worse. It would be extremely optimistic to expect Klay Thompson to play more than 40 games in his first year back after suffering two major injuries two years in a row. Not being a hater, just a realist.
Target iq vets like Olynik / Theis / Gay & deRozan / Grant & Plumlee / … Use Oubre Sign&trade + picks to Roll it UP
imagine if the warriors would have tanked and ended up getting Cade lol they then could flip Wiggins,Oubre, or Wiseman plus some bench guys for a star big like maybe KAT
imagine Curry/Klay/Cade/Draymond/KAT
That Klay projection just repeated the article.
Would the Pistons bite on Wiseman, Wiggins, and the Warriors 1st rd pick(14) for Grant, Plumlee, and Joseph?
Grant and Wiggins are very similar players. Plumlee is declining. Joseph is a back up. I don’t see it making the warriors better.
Grant is a lot better than Wiggins. Grant can
Grant is better than Wiggins. Grant is a better defender and shooter than Wiggins. Plumlee probably only has a few good years left, but he showed this year he is still a good starting center. Joseph is a veteran pg that the warriors are lacking. You are giving away Wiseman’s potential for the next 3 years. Based on the comments from the FO, I think they are okay with that
Wiggins defense is much better than he is given credit for. Poole is their back up scorer off the bench. mannion play better defense he can back up Curry. Warriors problem is they need 2 centers not just 1. they just played 2 critical games with no real center. Looney is not a good center.
GSW could get a far bigger haul from another team if that package is up for grabs. I like Plumlee and Grant on GSW as second string, but does Poole cancel out Grant now? Maybe GSW getting those two in a multi-team deal with more pieces coming and/or going is something I could get behind.
Curry not worth that at 34-37. Nobody is. Can’t field a championship team if one player gets that. MJ took less for yrs so Bulls could field a real team. He let others get paid. Since he was making all that endorsement money. Max contracts Dont work for me. Plenty of outside money to be had. Without paying one player 35% of cap. Any top player today can make more money . Outside of their team money. That’s what MJ did for them, U wellcome .
They are going to pay Curry all that, they have no choice. But it won’t be for what he provides in the future (years of being stuck in purgatory). This will be backpay for the 5 trips to the Finals while he was making about $12M/year, at least until the last year when they lost to Toronto. Both of the Splash Brothers, and Draymond, are getting paid for past performance and will keep their franchise in purgatory until they wise up and blow up the team.
Light years ahead, this organization is.
Light years ahead in how to spend the team into bankruptcy you mean. The more this team falls short of expectations the harder it will get to fill their brand new arena. They will be forced to give Curry his golden parachute in 2022, in turn mortgaging the future of the franchise by giving all their aging star players enormous amounts of backpay for the three rings they won. Light years ahead, flying into a black hole.
Not anymore! lol
“When asked about specific team needs, Myers mentioned a floor-spacing big man, [etc]”
So will Myer offer for Mike Muscala?— no. But no way would the reporter get a straight answer with names.
Bigs so far in this playoofs are staying inside, right or wrong.
Doesn’t matter. Curry and Green for all the good they do are turnover machines and without Klay or Durrant it was obvious to the other coaches what they needed to do. Green was a bad influence on Juan who started playing loose and wild with his passes and killed them. Enough kissing the team needs to make a big move or next year is the last play. Get rid of Green for someone with a brain. If Curry goes fine he only did well because he sat a year and is a injury away from the down slide.
4-year deal for almost $54M/year? We’re talking about a 34-year old player with a long history of ankle injuries throughout his career. Sounds like a really bad investment, although this franchise doesn’t seem to care about making bad investments these days (like paying Draymond Green $100M). They better pray that the salary cap skyrockets over the next few years or the Warriors luxury tax bills are going to be astronomical. Why not pass it on to the fans, $1000 a ticket seems fair.
That’s insanity.
Who wants MAGA Muscala on a team with good culture ?
What happened? I thought Giannis to Dubs was going to be talked into existence. No? Well then Poole and JTA will cover the Giannis contribution. Light Years !
