MAY 16: The Warriors have officially announced Payton’s new contract ahead of today’s regular season finale.
MAY 13: The Warriors plan to bring back Gary Payton II on a new deal this weekend, sources tell Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter links). Payton previously inked a pair of 10-day contracts with the team.
Payton, 28, got into 10 games for the Warriors during his 20 days with the organization. He only logged 40 total minutes in those 10 contests, but made the most of them, putting up 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting with 11 rebounds and six steals. Head coach Steve Kerr said at the time that the team wasn’t ruling out re-signing Payton before the end of the season.
“Gary played really well,” Kerr said in April. “He’s somebody who we feel like we’d love to have back. He’s got to consider his own options as well. So, we’ll see how it works out.”
Payton, the son of Hall-of-Famer Gary Payton, earned G League Defensive Player of the Year honors with the Raptors 905 earlier this year. He’ll provide depth in the backcourt for the Warriors as they prepare for the play-in tournament next week.
According to Slater (via Twitter), there’s an expectation that Payton’s new contract will extend beyond this season, though it’s unclear if any of next year’s money will be guaranteed. The terms are still being finalized, Slater adds.
Golden State currently just has 13 players on its standard 15-man roster, but is promoting two-way player Juan Toscano-Anderson to fill one of those spots — Payton would take the other, while Jordan Bell will be signed to a new two-way deal, giving the club a full 17-man squad.
I hope He stick and make the team next year. He is an NBA player!
Yes, he currently plays in the NBA lol
And so do about 500 other guys.
If GPII has a two year Beverly-run it’d be just what the doctor ordered for this dubs team. Point of attack defender is a priority after Klay’s injuries and Iggy’s departure. Lonzo Ball is probably the best fit for Golden State, but I’d be down to trade Wiseman, Wiggins and the MIN pick for Dillon Brooks, Jonas Valanciunas, Kyle Anderson and Xavier Tillman.
Instantly gives Golden State some much needed size with Anderson(6’9/229), Tillman(6’8/245) and JV(7/265) while Brooks is a 17/3/3 guy with elite defense and still just 25. Tillman is a better fit than Wiseman for Golden State, as he’s a high IQ defender+passer.
Memphis gets the opportunity to add Jalen Green or Jalen Suggs to a Ja/Allen/Clarke/JJJ/Wiseman/Winslow/Wiggins/Tyus/etc.
Of course I’d throw in one or all of Looney, Lee, Paschall or Poole as well.
A Dubs lineup of Steph/Klay/Oubre/Green/JV with Brooks/Anderson/Looney/Toscano-Anderson/Tillman and sayyyy Lee/Poole and Jessup/Mannion would be much much better than this group.
Valanciunas/Looney/Tillman/Draymond as our center rotation is versatile af. Anderson can play the 2, 3 and 4 as a plus defender and playmaker. Brooks is a lockdown defender of 1’s, 2’s and most 3’s.
Even if GSW can get Valancuinas, Brooks and Tillman for Wiggins, Wiseman and the MEM pick I’d be down, I do think adding Poole and Paschall can net Anderson as well and Golden State needs guys that are already developed for Steph whereas Memphis would exchange a 30yo big, a 22yo small ball 5, a 27yo rotation piece and a 25yo starting wing for a 21yo No2 overall pick/ big man, a 26yo 2way starting wing, and a lottery pick. So adding a 22yo comb guard and maybe another pick if possible could do it.
No more Mannion THANK GOD!
Tbh I’d rather he get a lot of Kent “Cmon man” Bazemore’s minutes too.
GP2 is an NBA player, glad he’s on my fave team. Similar energy to JTA.
Mannion defense has been improving. Much better than when he first started the year. I guess guarding Curry in practice makes you better.
Gary is a beast!!! Plenty of teams could use him!!
He has played in 71 games over the past five seasons combined. In a few years he might even be 1/10th the player his father was. Golden State found themselves a real gem.
