It wasn’t a great night for the Thunder at Tuesday’s draft lottery. The team had about a two-in-three chance that its own first-round pick would land in the top five and nearly a 50-50 chance that Houston’s pick would slide to No. 5, allowing OKC to swap the No. 18 selection for it. Instead, the Rockets kept their own pick and the Thunder’s selection slipped to No. 6.
Still, no NBA team has more draft picks in 2021 than the Thunder, who control three first-round selections and three more second-rounders.
The Pelicans, Pistons, Knicks, and Nets join them as teams that hold at least four draft picks this year. Those five clubs currently control 23 of the 60 picks in the 2021 draft, so it’s probably safe to assume they’ll be active on the trade market before or during the draft.
To present a clearer picture of which teams are most – and least – stocked with picks for the 2021 NBA draft, we’ve rounded up all 60 picks by team in the space below. Let’s dive in…
Teams with more than two picks:
- Oklahoma City Thunder (6): 6, 16, 18, 34, 36, 55
- Brooklyn Nets (5): 27, 29, 44, 49, 59
- Detroit Pistons (4): 1, 37, 42, 52
- New Orleans Pelicans (4): 17, 35, 43, 51
- New York Knicks (4): 19, 21, 32, 58
- Houston Rockets (3): 2, 23, 24
- Toronto Raptors (3): 4, 46, 47
- Orlando Magic (3): 5, 8, 33
- Charlotte Hornets (3): 11, 56, 57
- Indiana Pacers (3): 13, 54, 60
- Philadelphia 76ers (3): 28, 50, 53
Teams with two picks:
- Golden State Warriors: 7, 14
- Sacramento Kings: 9, 39
- San Antonio Spurs: 12, 41
- Memphis Grizzlies: 10, 40
- Atlanta Hawks: 20, 48
Teams with one pick:
- Cleveland Cavaliers: 3
- Washington Wizards: 15
- Los Angeles Lakers: 22
- Los Angeles Clippers: 25
- Denver Nuggets: 26
- Utah Jazz: 30
- Milwaukee Bucks: 31
- Chicago Bulls: 38
- Boston Celtics: 45
Teams with no picks:
- Dallas Mavericks
- Miami Heat
- Minnesota Timberwolves
- Phoenix Suns
- Portland Trail Blazers
What TF is OKC gonna do with 6 draft picks? Lol. They better start moving them before they end up like the Celtics a few years back when they drafted 6 dudes and cut 3 of them before the season even started.
Honestly, I’d keep them and just go all-in on playing young players. Given where they are, who cares how many games they lose this season. If they draft smart, collect a high pick next year and stay patient, they could turn around fairly quick.
Or they could end up like the Timberwolves or Kings and stay in a constant state of rebuild for the next two decades. Rebuilds are not automatic and they don’t always work out well.
Honestly it makes me sick when I see anyone say that no one should care how many games a team should lose this season. If no one cares, then why do they even play the games? Just join the G League for a few years without taking up space in a competitive league.
Given Presti’s career, it is more than likely those picks will be put to great use. I don’t think you can lump the Thunder in with the Kings and Twolves.
I mean you can’t compete in the NBA without a star, and viable title contenders have a minimum of two. What’s the point in trying to be a middling team that fights to just be within striking distance of an 8th seed? You’re only hurting yourself by doing that.
Sure, some rebuilds don’t work. That’s bad management. It happens. Then you make a management change.
I don’t know, if I feel like my favorite team has a long-term plan, losing doesn’t bother me for a few seasons. ::shrugs::
Celtics never cut 3 players after one draft. Young and Hunter were given time.
If they dont trade any picks they will probably draft over seas players that dont intend on coming to the nba for a few years
Draft & stash
Highly doubt they draft 6 players, especially after getting “unlucky” with the lottery balls. I expect a lot of trading up before draft day.
That #55 2nd round pick is garbage. They might package two first round picks & one or two second round picks to move up. 6 is a good spot but top 4 is better.
You have no idea who the #55 pick is. How can you say it is garbage?
Most late second round picks are garbage, they rarely pan out.
Thunder should trade the #6, #18, #36 for the Raptors #4 and #46
Thunder move up two spots to get 1 of the top 4 – whatever left of Suggs, Green, Mobley
Raptors acquire multiple assets to pair with Anunoby, Van Vleet, Siakam just to move back a few spots to #6. I’d target Jonathan Kuminga or Corey Kispert at #6.
I beg to differ top 3 name on this site
Why would the Thunder want to move from the 18th pick to the 46th pick? That is insane.
They’re moving up from #6 to #4
#4- chance to get Suggs, Green, Mobley
#6- no chance to get 1 of the top 4.
Moving up 2 spots to get an elite talent doesn’t come cheap.
Couple years ago Sixers moved up from #3 to #1
Cost them the #3 pick and a future first which would up being #14 in 2019 via the Kings selection (strong chance it was going to be a lottery selection cause kings).
It’s a deep draft. They are not going to be in title contention the next couple of seasons. They can afford to go for quantity over initial quality.
said by no NBA champion.
Quantity in the NBA doesn’t matter unless are talking about Elite talent.
Not all Elite players come into the Association that way. They need time to develop. OKC is not going to win a championship within the next few seasons. They have time to develop players. When you have a deep draft, you don’t want to limit your selections. Hell, they can probably find strong depth pieces in the 2nd round.
OKC will make a trade. They aren’t drafting 6 picks. 4 teams have no picks so they can trade for future picks to them.
1DET-Cade Cunningham OKSt.. 2HOU-Jalen Green GLI.. 3CLE-Evan Mobley USC.. 4GSW-Jalen Suggs Zags.. 5ORL-Jonathan Kuminga GLI.. 6OKC-Moses Moody Ark.. 7TOR-Davion Mitchell Baylor.. 8ORL-Jalen Johnson Duke.. 9SAC-Scottie Barnes FSU.. 10NOP-Corey Kispert Zags.. 11CHA-Charles Bassey WKU.. 12SAS-Josh Giddey Aus.. 13IND-Keon Johnson Tenn.. 14TOR-Alperen Sengun Tur.. 15DC-Ayo Dosunmu Ill.. 16OKC-Kai Jones Texas.. 17MEM-Ziaire Williams Stanford.. 18OKC-Isaiah Jackson UK.. 19NYK-Cam Thomas LSU.. 20ATL-Sharife Cooper Aub.. 21NYK-Miles McBride WVU.. 22LAL-Jared Butler Baylor.. 23HOU-Franz Wagner Mich.. 24HOU-Usman Garuba Esp.. 25LAC-Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Nova.. 26DEN-James Bouknight UConn.. 27BK-Filip Petrusev Ser.. 28PHI-Isaiah Todd GLI.. 29PHO-Daishen Nix GLI.. 30UTA-Brandon Boston UK… I have Toronto trading their #4 overall to GSW for #7 & #14 overall picks
Warriors reporters think that value of 7 and 14 is equal to 3 because of deep draft
I think it’s equal to 4-5
Wiseman is equal to 4
This year is twice as deep as any of past 3 years
14 is equal last year 7
Whether Cleveland wants Suggs us ultimately what will determine how high GSW will have to trade up. I think Cleveland would be better off with Evan. Which would allow the Ws to get Suggs at 4 by trading with Tor. Wiseman would arguably be the #1 pick in this draft same as last yr. Him & Evan are different like Timmy & KG were different but both def have HOF potential
Which Warriors reporters are you talking about?
Interesting. Because Pistons nailed Bey & Stewart in that area last year. If you look at the redraft of 2020, Bey is top 5 and Stewart is top 10.
The warriors do not have the fourth pick, the raptors do.
Check my last sentence @corporalfoxtrot
Okay.
Why would Toronto trade one possibly great player for a couple of decent ones? Quality is more important than quantity in the NBA.
Davion Mitchell & Alperen Sengun are both much better than just decent. Toronto went into the lottery looking at probably getting the 9th or 10th pick. If they are able to come out of it with the 7th AND 14th pick along with possiby Eric Paschall I think they’d be extremely happy. Everyone remembers Kawhis great postseason but the fact is that Toronto won their title bc they had a deep, talented, versatile roster. Adding Davion Mitchell (as a KLowry replacement) & Alperen Sengun aka Kirkland Jokic (as their starting 5 for the future) would be a great step back in that direction
Like it. Mitchell is a good Lowery replacement, so you must have him moving on. Barnes looks good there too.
Hornets getting Bassey and Lakers getting Butler should work… but I doubt the Kings take Giddey or Nuggets fall for Bouknight.
Yea I think Kyle will be elsewhere next season but Davion & Scottie are both the type of rookies that could make immediate impacts. FVV/Davion/Flynn/GTJ/OG/Scottie/Pascal/Boucher/Birch is a nice young core that should def have the Raps back in the playoffs next season.. Bassey has potential to be a perennial all-star big imo fr he could def give Charlotte back2back ROYs… I have the Spurs taking Giddey. He’s a perfect fit for them especially if DeRozan is elsewhere next season.. Bouknight would give Denver alot of what they lost when Gary Harris got hurt. Harris & Jokics 2man game was extremely productive for a long time but his injury took alot of that away & now he’s in Orlando. Bouknight is a natural scorer who knows how to cut, how to finish & just how to get buckets from all over the court. Plus he’s another guy that could probably come in & play rotation mins as a rookie
I think LUKA will have all Gms take major hesitation trading down a top 1~4 pick these days
7 and 14 would not be enough for 4
Why would there be any hesitation bc of Luka? That trade worked out better for the Hawks. Atl has 2 playoff series wins since that trade while Dallas has zero. But even if Toronto wanted something extra like Eric Paschall along with 7 & 14 I think GSW would be interested
your logic makes zero sense. yes, Atlanta has done well with Young but the success of the team is about allllllll the total parts. Atlanta has more of a cohesive team than Dallas but whether Young is a better player is very debatable and far from a definitive yes.
bassey is listed way to high. 2nd rounder. markus zegarowski from creighton is better than charles.
I feel like you probably haven’t seen much of Bassey. Creighton been 1 of my favorite teams over the past few years & i love Marcus’ game but best case scenario he develops into a backup nba pg. Bassey on the other hand could literally be Charlotte’s starting 5 on opening day & for the next decade plus. Hes very good at rebounding, defending & scoring while Marcus only helps u offensively. There’s at least 10pgs id take in this draft over Marcus. There’s only 1 big id take over Bassey. I strongly recommend u watch some film of him
Any chance the Rockets give the Cavs an inside scoop with who they take before draft night? You know, as like a thank you for robbing us of KPJ lmao. Of course I already know the answer, but hey a Cavs fan can only hope.
Ha, makes you wonder the lengths they go too
Private investigators….wiretaps…etc etc I could see all being in play these days
Most people have them taking Mobley. The only ones who don’t seem to think the Rockets won’t take him because they already have Christian Wood, but he can play alongside another big as was proven with Olynyk last season.
The Rockets already have tons of guys who can play in the 1-3 spots: Wall, Porter, Gordon, Tate, KJ Martin, House, Khyri Thomas and Augustin plus they could re-sign both Brown and Nwaba. So it makes far more sense to take the BPA with the highest ceiling at #2 who is arguably Mobley.
Green may be more NBA ready and have a higher floor like Cade does, but taking Mobley over another guard is the most likely pick IMO.
Houston didn’t just spend all that $ on Wood to go & use their most prized asset on a kid who plays the same exact position. Jalen Green & KPJ could be 1 of most electric offensive duos in the history of the league. Wall & EJ Gordon definitely had great careers but they’re nonfactors as far as Houston’s future. KPJ, Jalen & JTate is a really nice young starting backcourt for the Rockets to build around. Wood is the starting 5 for the foreseeable future in Houston tho. Mobley would obv be nice but there’s no way they can afford to pass on a kid like Jalen Green
On draft night, there’s a big poker game taking place with the top execs from the: Mavericks, Heat Trail Blazers and Timberwolves – since they have NOTHING ELSE to do that night.
