Assistant Pistons GM David Mincberg is leaving Detroit after one season under GM Troy Weaver, tweets James Edwards III of The Athletic. Edwards indicates that the split was mutual.
The rebuilding Pistons collected an array of intriguing young players during 2020/21, Mincberg’s lone year with the club. Detroit selected promising rookies Saddiq Bey, Isaiah Stewart, Killian Hayes, and Saben Lee in the 2020 draft. The Pistons also made tactical free agent acquisitions in adding ex-Nuggets Jerami Grant and Mason Plumlee last fall, traded for athletic 22-year old swingman Hamidou Diallo during the season, and will be selecting a top lottery pick in the 2021 draft.
Mincberg got his start as in-house legal counsel for the Grizzlies and the MLS club D.C. United. With Memphis, he became active in a variety of front office capacities, including scouting, the draft, trades and free agency. Mincberg was then hired as the Bucks’ director of basketball strategy in 2017, before being promoted to VP of basketball strategy ahead of the 2019/2020 season.
The Pistons have been actively reshaping their leadership group already during the offseason, having added longtime Michigan head coach (and short-term Cavaliers head coach) John Beilein as senior advisor/player development earlier this month.
For some reason I am reminded of the old saying about rats leaving the sinking ship.
Is it sinking? Detroit’s supposed to have a lot of promising young talent.
And they have a 52.14% chance of getting one of the top 4 guys in the draft.
Yeah I am not sure anyone had a better draft last year and set up to have a good one this year. They are pointed in the right direction finally.
Did they have a good draft? Or did they just have more opportunity for rookies to contribute and boost their stats?
They had two of the top 3 rookies in Win Shares, which can be attributed to playing time / volume.
But, they also had 3 rookies in the top 20 for WS/48. That does not include Hayes, who probably has the highest ceiling of the four.
They drafted very well. The number 16 pick will make all rookie team, and Bey, pick 19, won NBA player of the week honors. Both look great, they also got Saben Lee in second round who performed well. Hayes was only one that had a rough season due to injury for majority of it.
They are on a good trajectory, just need a number one scorer to help Grant and some floor spacing 3 point shooters and they will be alright. Looks a lot better than giving Kennard 15+ mil a year and keeping Drummond/Griffin around.
If the rats are jumping now, they must have learned to breathe underwater already. The submarine in Detroit hasn’t reached the surface in a long, long time.
People within this organization are probably going to be suffering from the bends because of how rapidly it will soon be rising from the depths…..
I honestly don’t know what to make of the Pistons. I see some good moves (Bey, Stewart) and some bad ones (I was low on Hayes coming into the draft). I think they’re on a better trajectory now than they were in previous years, but I also don’t think their future is quite as bright as many of the fans seem to think.
Still better than being an annual low-seed playoff team in the East, of course.
Surprisingly, the PISTONS did pick up some pieces last draft and will further improve this coming draft.
GM Weaver has got that OKC system down pat.
The Peter Principle perhaps in play?
Or, maybe he wasn’t onboard with the Beilein hiring.
Or, maybe something completely different.
