Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is not only looking for a more lucrative contract but also may prioritize a return to Los Angeles, where he grew up, according to Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News.
Dinwiddie is declining his $12.3MM player option in order to test the free agent market despite missing most of this season due to a partial ACL tear. Dinwiddie seems unlikely to return to the Nets and would prefer to join one of the L.A. teams, with Winfield noting he rehabbed his injury in California. However, due to his likely contract demands, Dinwiddie could only join the Lakers or Clippers in a sign-and-trade scenario.
We have more from the Atlantic Division:
- David Fizdale dealt with mental health issues during and after his final season with the Knicks, he said in an interview with Jesse Washington of The Undefeated. Fizdale said he was filled with self-doubt after getting fired during the 2019/20 season. “I thought the lowest point was during the losses,” Fizdale said. “But it was after, when you go through the whole part of, ‘What could I have done different? Did I even deserve this job?’ You think like you were an imposter. You felt like you got over on these people. You’re a fraud.”
- The Raptors emerged from the lottery with the No. 4 pick. Blake Murphy of The Athletic takes a closer look at what the Raptors might have to give up to move into the top three while also speculating on what assets they could acquire if they’re willing to move down to the 5-7 range.
- Agreeing to an extension with president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri, selecting top big man Evan Mobley with the No. 4 pick, and re-signing Kyle Lowry to a two-year deal. Those would be some of the components for an ideal offseason for the Raptors, Eric Koreen of The Athletic writes.
I don’t like the Dinwiddie idea of sign and trade because Lakers and Clippers would have hard cap issues
You should be the Lakers GM instead of Rob Lowe.
Good to know that Fizdale and I were on the same page regarding him as a HC. I don’t know if its any consolation to him, but his HC’ing also caused a lot mental heath issues for Knick fans.
I agree 100%. He is the Adam Gase of the NBA. He did good work as an assistant coach years ago on a dominant Heat team and has ridden that reputation (along with the support of Lebron and Wade) into 2 failed coaching jobs.
It really seems pretty simple. If you are considered this great coach yet the team that fired you has success after with most of the same core players then you are the problem. Just look at how Barrett and Randle performed under Thibs compared to under him.
I mean, the entire “job” is kind of fraudulent. Players can easily coach themselves.
That’s what people who don’t understand basketball say
Players can train themselves. Teaching them to be a team requires coaching.
@Stan 2 – all nba players have played on teams for literally at least two decades by the time they’re 30. How much teaching them to be a team do they need?
I’m just bitter because I watched Kerr piss away Curry’s 20’s because PNR’s weren’t “aesthetically pleasing” enough for him. No, he prefers the “Make Curry run a marathon every play while the others pass the ball 50 times, only to end up with Steph taking a contested 3”. KD literally admitted he would have stayed had Kerr ran PNRs. NBA coaches are by far the most overrated profession, although I admit they need to exist, just, we need to stop centering them as if they are playing the game. What they do (in Kerr’s case) is ruin the career of the greatest player any of us has ever seen by downplaying who he really was for 7+ years.
Lol best player? No just not
Spoken like someone who has never played basketball lol, or sports in general..
I have done both, many times over, over three decades. Weird connection to make. I hated every coach I had because he was an egomanical moron living out his childhood through his players and me.
Again, I did write “kind of” – coaches do have purpose, most definitely, but we need to stop framing them as important as players – thats the fraudulent part. The people who matter most are the people playing the game on the court/field.
He’s and A ole. Got no clue. Only here to spout his bitterness about life. Doesn’t care about ball.
Oh. So that’s why you were so worked up about Steve Kerr all season…
Clippers are already $6 million over the hard cap assume that Clippers don’t get rid of Kawhi
Lakers can’t do sign and trade with Nets because Nets are already hard capped
No one is hard-capped for the 2021-22 season yet. They don’t carry over.
A team can have a payroll over the hard cap, or luxury tax apron, which keeps them from doing things that will cause them to be hard-capped.
It’s cool for Fizdale to come out and give some honest quotes.
Agreed. I feel like the coaching profession and sports in general downplays the mental health aspect of getting fired, being cut, or traded. To indirectly hear that “you aren’t good enough or there’s someone better”, is not something most of us have to hear consistently and publicly. These people are human, we gotta remember that.
Hopefully after seeing the Knicks where they were, while using the same rotations, and being relatively the same, minus a couple of guys, helped him out. It’s hard to help build a culture when nobody else there knows what it looks like
That would make it worse, for me anyway.
It was possibly his preferences that led to the Knicks/Rose’s thinking that they should draft a 4 and not Haliburton. Nobody else was fond of Randle given his low efficiency, either, but Fizdale set the climate. Coaches trying to be players’ coaches can only get so far. Best to be the star’s coach and tough otherwise.
If Haliburton was drafted, he would get much of the credit for the team’s rise, taking away from the HC change from his firing. He could say, if only we had a Haliburton! Saying, if only we had a Barret with one more year of experienve, is not the same.
Fizdale was not ready for NY. It’s not how you handle success, that’s easy here. It’s how you handle adversity and failure. That can bury you here. Wasn’t a smart or good move to bring in a rookie. As we all see now. Story says Dinwiddie is from LA. So I can see him wanting to go there. But I don’t see him getting more than 15-16 mill (2 yr) coming off the injury. His next contract is the big one. I think Lakers make a lot of sense for him. He’s a good fit with Bron and AD. He’s a guy I wanted for two yrs now. He wants a bag. He’s only getting a lunch bag in NY.
Dinwiddie would certainly help the Clippers, but that’s not really the team I would like to see helped! It gets complicated with the Lakers. There must habe been some negotiating going on for this preference to be put out there.
Clippers would have to trade for him. Lakers can sign him by dropping Schroeder. He can then sign bigger contract in a few yrs. Schroeder to me is not a good fit with Bron. We all know Bron runs team now. Lakers window is closing. So they have to be smart about who they sign. I can even see them trading Kuzma.
No they can not. If Spencer is looking for anything other than the MLE, Lakers (even if DS does not resign) won’t have the money to offer anything. They already have nearly $122m committed without signing a single FA (like THT, Alex C, Kief etc.). Would have to be S&T with Lakers also.
Ok but he is a better fit with Lakers than Clippers. Especially after yr Reggie had.
Toronto won’t be lucky enough for Evan Mobley to fall all the way down to #4.
He has way too much potential for Detroit, Houston, and the Cavs to pass on him.
Detroit will pass him.cade for detroid.houston blowket will pick him…
If Rockets don’t take Mobley. He will go 4. You understand that right. Cavs are not taking Mobley. It’s either Suggs or Green. And they will take Green first. Dude I remember you being all hot for Suggs. What happened??
Dinwiddie for Montrezl ?
There you go. Harrell opts in, like he shpuld because $9.7mil is good for him, then Dins can be signed for $12.15mil, about what he made this past year. Lakers let Schroder go, putting them at abt $112.2mil, giving them abt $20mil for Alex, Talen, Markief, which is still pretty tight… for 10 players. Luxury tax. Also rostered are Mathews, Dudley, Drummond, Mclemore, rookies.
Lol… Drummond is gone guy!
Wrong. If Spencer gets 12.5 like you say here, it’s puts the Lakers at nearly $122-123m
Bron: $41
AD: $35
KCP: $13
Kuz: $13m
Spencer: $12.5
Gasol: $2.7
DENG CAP SPACE: $5m
Okay. Well hard-cap city
luxury tax regardless… replace the 12.5 with Mons’ 9.7 and fill out the roster.
Dins can prolly do better than 12.15 elsewhere, but a hometown discount was hinted.
Dinwiddie makes a lot of sense for the clippers.
I also think he would be great for the Celtics, if that’s an option. Chicago could also be an option that might be good for him.
Love Dinwiddies a game and his play preKyrie but since then he’s become a lot more demanding it seems. Declining his option, saying he wants to stay in LA. Kinda acting like he’s a all star, he’s only averaged over 15 point per game for a season twice in his 7 seasons. Never done much in the postseason either. Coming off his injury he should look to go to a playoff team with other good players and boost his value of the back of a good season then hit FA again.
Think DeVonte Graham will have a great FA, he’s coming off the back of two good seasons. Only 26 and so far has been quiet. Going to be loads of playoff teams needing a new point guard and he should be able to pick his place.
Sucking and failing as an NBA coach while getting paid millions is now a mental health issue because he lost his confidence after losing? Geez. I guess that ranks right next to OCD, PTSD, depression, bipolar and schizophrenia on the mental illness totem totem pole
The Kings should sign Dinwiddie. He can play alongside Fox. Halliburton is not ready to be a starter and Hield should be traded maybe for Barton. Kings need an experienced guard who can score and has good playmaking skills. Fox can’t do it all by himself.
Dinwiddie to heat…
I like Dinwiddie on Knicks. Especially if we trade up for a wing. But I didn’t like his statement on getting paid. All who can play will get paid. You don’t need to throw that out there. NY is the biggest market by far. Just win
I’ve said since mid-year that Dinwiddie was opting out, and was going to the highest bidder. Why? Because all his statements during the year indicated this (even before he outright said it).
I don’t blame him. He’s 28. To date, he’s made “only” about 25 mm (in the aggregate) in his career. So, this may well be his last chance to sign a big contract. Expecting him to behave like others his age who’ve made over 100 mm (and there are many) is not realistic.
I’d ignore the L.A. (going home) thing. He’s just telling the teams that can actually sign him (i.e., non-L.A. teams) that they shouldn’t low ball him. He’ll try to find a team that’s willing to pay him to give up his dream of going home to L.A., then take that salary to the L.A. teams and see if they can match it via a S&T with the Nets. No discount either way.
I could see the Knicks being a player for Dinwiddie if he doesn’t get the long term deal he is seeking, and is willing to do a shorter deal. Knicks would be a good spot for 1/1 “prove it” deal in that event. Even that 1 year commitment would likely still be north of his option price. Which was why he was always opting out.
