Drafting Evan Mobley with the No. 3 pick wouldn’t necessarily mean the Cavaliers would let restricted free agent Jarrett Allen walk, Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes. The USC big man is widely considered one of the top four prospects in the draft, and sources tell Fedor the Cavs believe he could thrive at the four or the five, so he should be able to share the frontcourt with a center like Allen. Mobley could also slide over to the middle in some lineups, and his versatility would provide head coach J.B. Bickerstaff with more flexibility.
We have more from the Central Division:
- The Bulls ought to consider re-signing unrestricted free agent Derrick Rose, K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago opines. Rose is coming off a strong season and if he’d be willing to accept some or all of their mid-level exception, it would energize the fan base.
- The Bulls don’t have a first-round pick but they’re approaching the draft with the idea that they could seize an opportunity to move into the first round, Johnson adds. They were also a presence at the combine, searching for a diamond in the rough with the No. 38 overall pick.
- Re-signing unrestricted free agents Doug McDermott and T.J. McConnell is a major focus for the Pacers this offseason, coach Rick Carlisle said on Tuesday, per Scott Agness of FieldhouseFiles.com (Twitter link). “The priority is to get the new staff in here, work towards good health as much as we can, try to get McConnell and McDermott re-signed if we can do that,” Carlisle said.
- Carlisle has yet to officially sign his contract but he plans to do so when he arrives in Indiana on July 5. He’s eager to work with the roster and find ways to make the current group better, according to Agness (Twitter links). “Whatever players are presented to me by management or ownership, I really take a great deal in pride and love the challenge of molding that group into the right kind of system,” he said.
I have absolutely no idea why people keep saying Mobley can play PF. I am sure he will not play any extended time at PF in the league. He was a center in HS and College. Not sure why people are pushing that.
I didn’t know you knew more than scouts and reporters who spend 100% of their time watching basketball. Watch a scouting video bud, he is more than capable of playing PF.
Lol you just gotta make it personal don’t you. Lol. Im just a fan on here like you making sports assessments. Noone on hereclaims to be a legit scout. Cut it out bro.
;)
No he’s not. Doesn’t have the lateral movement. And his future and Money is playing Center. He’s a good defender needs girth. And will be a rim protector. First of writers only care about stories. They are not scouts. And scouts get it wrong too. As long as I’ve been following ball. My eyes are as good as any. Yet I will listen to all who do this for a living. To see any truth in it. Mobley is a center. Duncan was a center. Just cause Mobley can step out does not make him a 4. Cavs would be idiots to take Mobley. Means Green is gone. You trade out or take Suggs. Magic would love to land Mobley.
People are saying that he lacks the bulk to play center at 215 pounds. Plus he can shoot from the outside and defend smaller guys as well. The distinction between the two positions has become a lot less important. Although teams have a starting center, that guy usually only plays at the beginning of each half. Then most teams move their PF to the 5 at the end of each half.
Spoken like a true fan ….. keep watching
If Cade and Green go 1 and 2
Cavs pick Suggs
Or
Trade the pick
Cavs have Nance and Love
I predict
Knicks will pay Rose $15m+ per year
You just said earlier Rose gets 12m
Inflation.
I am happy to see you follow my post
There are 3 types
1 Rose could demand market value $17m per year
2 Knicks President Leon is cheap. He refuses to pay market value to role players –
3 I predict
That would be a very Knick like move. Knock like move from years past that is.
Twin towers doesn’t work in modern nba. Honestly Porzingus should be a center but “draft analysists” say this every year
Exactly my point. PF now are more swift amd footing and shoot from the perimter. From what I have seen Mobley as an athletical mobile 7 footer is still doesn’t have quick twitch movement and perimiter oriented offense. He will not play a KD style of 7 footer.
If he plays PF he will be the next Porzingas. And we all see how that isgoing.
20pts/9 rebounds/1.3 blocks on 47/37/85 shooting. Awful. Smh
Dude he shot 2 threes a game. And most of his FG came from at the basket. Stop. Lol
And your point is? Must a 7ft be a 3pt shooter? Guys like you are so corny. If a guy fits in with a ball dominant guy like Luka and can still give me 20/10 and shoot efficiently then stfu and enjoy it. And btw he shot 6 3pt attempts s game and made 38% of them. Your mad because he ONLY took 6 attempts? I don’t even understand your point dude. Silly.
“Guys like me?” You know nothing about meor couldn’t point me out in a crowd dummy. Keep it to sports debate and stop trying to talk tough over the internet. Because Iam sure your teeth can easily be knocked out if it comes to it.
Where have we seen it fail?
I agree to a point. I think inherently big guys are not running your offense, and so twin towers means splitting touches between 2 guys who can’t stretch the floor.
That said, you get a point forward in there — someone like Embiid…maybe KAT? It has potential to be deadly. But you need at least one exceptional big man which is not always easy to come by.
It all depends on who Mobley plays next to. If the Rockets draft him then they could use him alongside Christian Wood. He and Olynyk worked great together since both of them can shoot from the outside. Mobley still has to work on his outside shooting, but he’s quite capable of becoming an effective 3-point shooter in the NBA.
It does if the towers can shoot.
That’s the only way it can work. If both bigs are capable 3-point shooters, it forces the guys on the other team to come out to defend them outside the arc. We now see a lot more PF/C’s who can shoot threes because it spreads out the defense and makes it a lot easier for the smaller, quicker guys to drive to the basket. It works just as well, maybe even better, if you have two guys that can both do it.
I reallllly think ppl have a basic misunderstanding of the game. You CAN’T have all 5 players on the perimeter. Be happy if you have 1 big who can shoot the 3. But to expect to have 2 or ask them to be perimeter players negates the very value of being 7ft tall. We’re moving backwards.
I hope Indy doesn’t resign McConnell and he comes back to Philly.
I want him for mu bulls too
He would be a good fit for the Bulls, a disappointment if he is the only PG they sign.
Nah, I love TJ but where is he going to play? Even if we move Ben from the point (not something I am in favor of, but many are) you still have Hill, Maxey and even Milton or Seth in certain situations. I don’t think TJ would be more than a deep depth piece here with garbage time minutes.
The people pushing Mobley’s ability to play as a 4 are likely his agents, to pump draft stock. All else being equal (or even close), a one position big has less value (particularly at the draft stage) than a two position big. This is more true today than ever.
Where he’s always played isn’t dispositive. It’s his skill set that’s being promoted, in particular his ability to guard on the perimeter.
The Bulls are trading up to pick 24 to draft Dosunmu. Book it now, done deal!
Be easier to sign Dinwiddie.
Not that easy giving a guy a big contract coming off a big injury.
I dont think any team pass on ayo. scottie lewis is more reallistic.bulls need defensive bench player.
Not if the Knicks take him at 21
The New York Knickerbockers will probably draft a Center because they are the BIG APPLE they want BIG players and Dosunmu only is 6′ 3” (wearing no shoes). Good enough to match with girls on Tinder, but doesn’t get you a whole lot of matches with NBA teams.
Go away NOW …. go dance
Why? Ayo is not an NBA pg. I’m not saying he’s not an NBA player at all. Just not the facilitator they need.
Agree with you. What is so special about Ayo? I’m from Chicago but just because Ayo is from Chicago doesn’t mean that he is NBA material. IMO it remains to be seen. Wish Ayo well.
If Mobley can catch, pump, drive and kick then he can play the 4. If he can’t then he can’t.
I would think shooting should be part of the skill assessment there. You can catch, pump, drive, kick, punch, and do any other thing, but if you can’t shoot you won’t make it in the league.
Gianis knocked ur door
Simmons can’t shoot, but some people still think he can make it.
He’s DPY every yr candidate. What are you talking about. Even if he never starts again he’s better than any Rocket. The guy will retire after 18 yrs in NBA. Always told you your Homer vision and Hating. Makes you look unintelligible. You think trolling is worth that.
what’s your definition of being a PF that can shoot? So you mean 10-15 ft jumpers or 3pt shots?
McDermott and McConnell both had really good years for the Pacers. If they sign them and run it back, if everyone stays healthy, I think they’ll surprise a lot of people. A heathy TJ Warren would make a big difference.
Have any of you ever played ball. There’s a reason they are called Centers. Maybe you should do research. It’s easy to do that today. Take too long to explain it to you. Especially the rookies who think Steph invented shooting. Or KD is the first one to do it.
Shooting in general has changed the gm. Because it opens up the floor. Ten guys on a half court gets crowded. You understand right. It’s why you have motion offense. But great Iso players need room to work. Centers as rim protectors have always been important. But today it’s used more as weapon. Like use it when you need it. So when you get a two way talent like Embiid, Mobley (potentially), Ayton. It’s a unique player. Cause size does matter in NBA. Means he can stay in gm O or D. A center has a high %FG. And if he’s a good shooter it means FTs. Like Free Throws. They are FREE. So he’s a big threat in close gms. Real bigs demand doubles so it means someone is open. Jokic a great ast C. Mobley a high IQ center. Are you understanding the upside now. Mobley’s future is better than Allen’s. But Allen will also be a top C talent. So why would you mess with that. Allen could be a better defender. Plus Mobley is yrs away. Ayton is starting to look real good now, after 3yrs. Still not Embiid level. Allen is ready NOW so why mess with that. Green is the guy Cavs want and should get. What’s even more crazy. Just googled Aytons Bio. And it lists him as PF. I’m telling you I must be getting old. Teams are built around players you have. Not players you want. Or some day will have. Winning teams understand that.
If you were typing on a keyboard, you would have edited out nearly all of that. Do the same for voice and start over with a point.
I agree with most of whst you said. If I hear one more guy complain that a 7ft prospect doesn’t shoot the 3 I’m going to crazy. it’s a compliment…. I’ts something extra to improve their game but its not the main thing.
that said, the Cavs would be idiots to trade Sexton.
Rose is not leaving Thibs now. They are building something now. He can end his career in NY. Take a fair contract. NY will take care of you for ever. Rose is solid off the bench and a great mentor. He’s not leaving. Burkes is the guy who might get a good offer. And I don’t see Noel staying. Bulls need a starting PG. That’s what they should concentrate on. Dinwiddie is actually a good choice. Even Dragic for two yrs if you draft one. But to keep Lavine happy. They have to get a PG now. A FA or a trade. Rozier can work
This is true. Rose is a great fit for them as back up PG. But, not at the kind of money being thrown around on here.
I mean seriously with CLE, why on earth would you put Allen in the picture of picking Mobley or not?
I can easily count 14 centers that were better than him this season, you don’t pass on a franchise altering talent to suit an average/below average player that can’t get much better than what he is right now, right?
I mean if it comes down to a choice, just boot out Allen as far as you can & welcome Mobley with wide open arms!!!
Saves alot of money too for a better free agent.
Here’s the thing that kills me as far as how we view bigs. Allen does two things well. Shoots for a high FG% (61%/6th ranked), blocks shots (1.4 pg/10th ranked), rebounds (10 pg, 13th ranked) and plays good defense although he’s not elite. Offensively, he’s limited. The average distance of allllllll of his shots come from within 5ft of the basket. That’s the same as Dwight Howard and Andre Drummond. Yet, those two rank top 5 in defensive rating, top 15 in defensive win share and top 30 in defensive+/-. Howard ranks #1 in both in defensive rating and defensive win share. All those are among active leaders. However, both players have been CRUCIFIED for just being what they are. What ppl might…. might mean is that they were overpaid. the NBA does NOT pay big bucks for defensive bigs and that’s exactly whst Jarrett Allen is. A defensive big with limited shot range and repertoire. Extend him but he’s not a max player and he should NOT earn more than a Sexton extension.
The thought that the Cavs might be unwilling to pay up Sexton. a guy whos averaged 24/4/3 on 47/37/81 should get more than Allen and I could careless what some of the metrics say. The ONLY knocks on Sexton is his defense, his size and that he’s not a PG. Well…
you can’t change his size. You CAN coach him to become better defensively. He’s had 3 different coaches in 3 seasons. You can make him the SG and let Garland be the primary pg. Sexton did increase his assists pg to 4.4 .
Sorry, if they felt comfortable overpaying for an oft injured and over age 30 Love then they need to overpay Sexton a player who has improved all 3 years. And I don’t care who they draft you do NOT trade a guy who’s given you 3 years of evidence for a kid who hasn’t shown anything about 1 year in college or the d-league. they might be great but they may also struggle early on. Draft whomever and if there’s a glut of talent then what a great problem to have. deal once they’ve given you something on the nba level top evaluate. They CAN go over the cap to retain their own player.
Overpay is what?
You don’t overpay x just because you overpaid Love. Love wasn’t supposed to be injured as much as he has, or ignored by the rookie PG as much as he was.
Ideally a FO never overpays, but if it does, that does not mean they should keep doing it.
Sexton is an ideal spark/points player… on a good team, off the bench. That limits his value. At that point, gaining experience, he learns the point, which a 4.4 assist pg suggests he will.
Allen will not get a max offer. But he has a positive attitude which the Nets seemed to miss to their detriment (even if a healthy Dins would have fixed that). So probably he gets bid up to a $4/88m, 22 a year. If the Cavs get Mobley, they may not match, just a guess. The draft comes before free agency.
