Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey received a $75K fine on Monday evening for violating the NBA’s anti-tampering rules, the league announced in a press release. The 76ers were also hit with a separate $75K fine for the violation.
The NBA explained in its statement that the penalty was a response to a social media post Morey made on June 3 regarding Warriors star Stephen Curry.
Morey, on Twitter, shared a screenshot of an Instagram post in which Curry praised his brother, Sixers sharpshooter Seth Curry, following Seth’s 30-point outburst in Game 5 of the 76ers’ first-round series vs. Washington. Morey added the caption, “Join ’em,” which was widely interpreted as a call for this season’s scoring champ to join his younger brother in Philadelphia.
Morey later responded to his tweet with the following clarification: “My goodness folks I am talking about the fact that we are all thrilled @sdotcurry is here with the @sixers — nothing else.” However, that wasn’t enough to dissuade the NBA from fining both the Sixers and their head of basketball operations.
This is the second time this season that Morey has been fined for a violation of the NBA’s anti-tampering rules. He was also hit with a $50K penalty in December for a tweet about James Harden.
The NBA league office is a JOKE…
So, that was “tampering” but what the Clippers did to get Leonard and George wasn’t? I call B.S. There was tampering on a much higher level to get George to demand a trade to a specific team which gave the Thunder only 48 hours, (at most), to complete a deal, and shortly after signing an extension. An extension, by the way, which was negotiated before Leonard’s demands.
Come on you know the NBA is bias. Draymond green got fined over a comment last year about booker not even naming which team he should go to. Lebron is able to tamper with every all star in the league and never a fine. Look how he can break protocol and get a pass for it.
Excellent response.
I always get labeled a hater (or muted) any time I say negative stuff about LeBron James on here, but whatever. I never get an “excellent response”.
They weren’t and you dump your hate constantly. BTW Dray was wrong as recent Suns results show.
Players are allowed to recruit for legal reasons… It would be illegal to ban players talking, or any unionist at least. GMs though restrict themselves. Morey held up a sign. Etc, etc, etc. Old debate.
Morey should just be GSW GM already lmao – remember during his short stint of unemployment, his series of “Warriors are the greatest” tweets? The guy just loves Steph Curry so much, when all he did was ruin any chance Houston had of winning a title for him – thats called “total ownership of a franchise” hahaha
So for a joke he got fined more than Meyers Leonard?? League office is a joke
Not just a joke, Morey has definitely been “on notice” regarding his Warriors-related tweets for years and this is the culmination of YEARS of trolling. While I agree Leonard got off way too lightly, Morey was definitely on his last chance to where anything tweeted at Steph was going to get him dinged with a fine.
This is a longterm issue, not a single “joke”. Way deeper than that…
Yup, morey is totally playing the long game with his tweets
Well, unlike Daryl Morey, Leonard has not tweeted about China in the past and is not targeted by the league. This is Morey still paying for that. China wants Morey punished, the league is only too happy to do their bidding.
Only a few Billion in lost revenue to make up.
Let’s see if I have this right. The Chinese govt violently suppresses Chinese dissidents for their fight for democracy. Violently, meaning they massacre them. Morey criticized the Chinese government. Add to that the Chinese government suppressed the warning of a high standing doctor regarding a potential covid outbreak. And NBA punishes Morey? NBA defends China? Punishes Morey? And now again punishes Morey? BLM was a necessary and justified NBA stance. No doubt. But nothing for the Chinese oppressed? The NBA should have given Morey a commendation for his criticism of the Chinese government. Yet they punished him and continue to punish him.
When the Rockets let Morey go people thought it was because of his anti-China remarks but it was really more of a cost-cutting move by Fertitta.
Two birds one stone
Rafael Stone? He has done an excellent job replacing Morey.
#Ridiculous and #Ticky-Tack
At least he didn’t tweet about China.
Pat Riley is next
It would be nice to have both brothers Curry on the Sixers next season
Morey needs to lose weight, shave and get off Twitter.
