Penny Hardaway will stay in his position as head coach of the University of Memphis, Hardaway announced in an Instagram post. He was under consideration for the head coach job with the Magic, and he expressed a future interest in that position, even if the time wasn’t right now.
“One day in the future I would love to coach in the NBA, and wouldn’t that be great if it were the Orlando Magic?” Hardaway said. “But today isn’t that day.”
Memphis has a 63-32 record under Hardaway’s leadership, in which time he coached 2020 No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman and No. 20 pick Precious Achiuwa and won the 2021 NIT championship.
“Today I’m here with my players, with the fans, with the city, working as hard as I can to try to bring us a national championship,” Hardaway said.
It’s unclear whether Hardaway – a Magic legend in his own right – withdrew from the search or was informed by the team he was no longer under consideration. Either way, Orlando will look elsewhere for its next head coach, with Kenny Atkinson and Terry Stotts among those viewed as strong candidates.
Taylor Jenkins definitely might wanna start watching his back. If the Grizz don’t win a playoff series next yr they’ll be announcing Penny as their new coach in summer 2022
Disagree. Memphis is WAY ahead of the curve.
You can’t say what Jenkins did wrong. Just say race. Players get better under Jenkins, except hobblety Winslow.
IDK what happened with Clarke. He didn’t keep up.
STAY in college for awhile and leave a coaching legacy before NBA!
Why? Life is short. No risk, no reward.
What legacy? Hardaway’s teams have finished in 3rd or 5th place each season he has coached at Memphis. Sure they won the NIT this year, but that basically the same as being the 69th best team in the NCAA these days.
GSW couldn’t match up with ORL on Wiseman, we understand.
One would think that GS would have had a nice match for Orlando before moving Vucevic to the Bulls. Weissman and Wiggins perhaps, with maybe the first rounder as a sprinkle on top to make it happen? GSW would have a nice lineup the following year.
Agreed and was pining for it. If Lacob/Kerr had any idea what they were doing they would have run the cupboard and traded for Vucevic, Gordon and Fournier, being how little all those guys were ultimately traded for – add those 3 at the deadline and GSW finishes in the top 4 and is probably waiting on their finals opponent right now.
The daily bad Marty plan that others would not do.
Why are the worst fans on either coast?
called it
Magic is a train wreck anyway, wouldn’t have been a good first gig in the nba.
Good move …. Do something first.
Penny appears to be in the business for the long term, and, if that’s the case, signing on with the current Orlando FO isn’t a great career move. Continue to build his program at Memphis. Continue developing his HC’ing skills. He’s not an NBA AC who needs to take any NBA HC job offered. He’s not a college HC with no NBA background. Leverage what you got.
Boylen straightened the mouse ears on his head, put the walnut between his teeth, and hit the video button on his phone. “You need tougneff Orlando!” As he bit down, he was not sure if the crack was only the walnut or one of his eye teeth. He didn’t care, the NBA is all about Instagram nowadays.
