Having spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach on Frank Vogel‘s staff, Jason Kidd has impressed the Lakers during that time, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, who says the front office has “raved” about Kidd.
Haynes cites Kidd’s innovative ideas, communication skills, and ability to “rally the troops” as traits that have impressed the Lakers. The club believes he should be a top candidate for open head coaching jobs this offseason — and it sounds like he will be.
According to Haynes, the Celtics are expected to interview Kidd for their newly-opened head coaching position. Additionally, Haynes reports that there’s an expectation Kidd will be a top target for the Trail Blazers if they move on from Terry Stotts. Marc Stein of The New York Times echoes this point, tweeting that there’s “strong buzz” in coaching circles linking Kidd to Portland.
Boston is the only team that currently has a head coaching vacancy after Brad Stevens transitioned to a front office role. However, a number of other teams are evaluating their head coaches. Besides the Blazers and Stotts, the Pacers and Wizards will have to make decisions on Nate Bjorkgren and Scott Brooks, respectively. So it may not be long before there are multiple clubs in the market for a new coach.
Kidd has two stints as a head coach under his belt, having led the Nets for a single season in 2013/14, then the Bucks from 2014-18. He had a combined regular season record of 183-190 (.491) during his four-and-a-half years as a head coach in Brooklyn and Milwaukee, with a playoff mark of 9-15 (.375), including a lone series win in 2014.
Kidd has had some run-ins with the law in the past. He pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge in 2001 and to a misdemeanor DWI charge in 2013. However, his legal history hasn’t prevented him from being hired for multiple jobs since then.

Celtics and Blazers would expect to win conferences
The Wizards were already overachievers this season with Scotty Brooks.
They won’t exceed this year’s win total in an 82-game season in 2022.
Many Reporters expect the Lakers to trade for Lillard or Beal
What attractive package should the Lakers offer?
The Herd would trade Davis for Beal
Unbeatable trade?
No one wants overpaid Schroeder
They don’t have anything attractive, unless you think a bum like Kuzma has any value.
Kuzma makes only a couple million. They have to match salaries so LeBron and AD are the only ones that can match. Blazers aren’t trading their franchise cornerstone for anything less than an all star and multiple draft picks if he were to demand a trade. Lakers don’t have any draft capital or players to make salary work.
Kuzma used to make only a couple million on his rookie contract, it just expired. Now he’s getting $13M/year, which is way too much.
Kuzma made $3.5 this year, he has a new extension starting next year?
Kuzma is definitely one of the most overrated players in the NBA. I really hope the Lakers can find a sucker team to accept him in a trade. His inconsistency and poor defense make me cringe too often and I only see his value continuing to decline.
The trouble with Kidd is his coaching record in Milwaukee and in NJ. In NJ, he burned Larry Frank and then abruptly quit. In Milwaukee, he left and the team took a huge leap forward.
I’m sure some team will take a flyer on him because of his name. But I’ve got to imagine most teams will be highly skeptical of Jason Kidd, head coach.
Yeah it reminds me of the Marc Jackson problem. Not a good sign when trams take a big step after a coach leaves.
Are you saying Kidd needs to grow up?
The issues with hiring Kidd as HC have nothing to do with his coaching ability. Which I doubt anyone questions. He’s a basketball savant, and a rising superstar as a HC after his one year with the Nets and his first with the Bucks. But issues of character and judgment have always followed him, and he doesn’t seem capable of making it an historical footnote. I think a team has to ask is he worth it.
J-Kidd is a great HC & any team that gets him will be all the better for it, no doubt ’bout it!
Now Luke what is the point of bringing the legal issues J-Kidd had sooo many years ago?
Has nothin’ to do with his ability to coach, has nothin’ to do with the person he is right now.
He was punished or whatever for what he did, so it’s wiped clean, clearly some people don’t believe in giving a new chance to others, right?
Personal issues have nothin’ to do with professional ability, he can do whatever he pleases in his life, none of our business, right?
Didn’t read here anywhere that Kobe got into the HoF despite his rape history…
