The Heat and Spurs have interest in signing unrestricted free agent Warriors swingman Kelly Oubre Jr. this summer, per Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports. Goodwill also lists the Knicks among Oubre’s prospective suitors, which aligns with a previous report from Marc Berman of the New York Post stating that there was mutual interest between Oubre and New York.
Oubre signed a two-year, $30MM contract extension while with the Suns in 2019.
In his lone season with Golden State, Oubre showcased his value as a defensive-oriented athletic wing, and could help fill needs for all three clubs mentioned by Goodwill, who predicts that the 25-year-old will be on the move during the 2021 offseason.
Though the 6’7″ wing out of Kansas connected on a middling 31.6% of his long-range looks during the 2020/21 season, there is hope that he can return to something approaching the respectable 35.2% three point shooting mark he enjoyed in ’19/20 with the Suns.
Goodwill notes that comparable non-All-Star wings of a similar age have fetched a respectable annual sum lately, citing salaries ranging from $12MM-$21MM per year.
The Spurs and Heat could both carve out significant cap space this summer, depending on their decisions when it comes to re-signing free agents such as DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills (for San Antonio) and Victor Oladipo, Goran Dragic, and Andre Iguodala (for Miami).
I still don’t understand what the fascination with this guy is. He seems like just another dime-a-dozen wing to me.
He is solid defensively and can switch. He does enough offensively and he’s still young so upside is part of the equation. He wasn’t a good fit on the warriors playing next to a similar player in Wiggins. I don’t really like his fit on the Heat, the other teams would probably work out better. Teams have to use money on someone and this class is thin
watched him all year with the warriors. He would have some great games but others do a complete disappearing act. He needs a tough coach that will motivate him because at times he just goes to the corner and wait for the ball.
But I thought Kerr was a great coach.
It was Green who was motivating him. The guy has all the talent but no drive to use it.
So basically his ceiling is Trevor Ariza.
Oubre’s been in the league 5 seasons and has career averages of 32.6% 3P% and 1.0 apg vs 1.1 tpg. He doesn’t space or create.
The his career Defensive Box +/- is negative 0.4
I think he’s a guy a lot of people just assumed would develop into a 3+D guy, but the thing is he really never did. He had one good season in Phoenix but beyond that he’s pretty much back end rotation material.
Higher clip than Simmons who y’all live to defend…
Agreeed, missing a winners dna. Can’t hit a 3 at a high enough clip. No grit
I’d take Torrey Craig over Oubre
They should do a double sign and trade with Oubre for Oladipo.
Oladipo needs a yr to prove he’s right. No one is giving him big money.
Is anyone giving Oubre big money either? Doubt it.
Woe to the team that signs Oubre.
I remember when he was traded to the Warriors after Thompson’s most recent major injury, and people there were acting like the Warriors would be just fine with him as a temporary replacement. Then when he got hot for a while during the season Marty was just raving about him, too damn funny.
Obrue, He is a two way player. I think Spurs looks good for him. Knicks I don’t see it. His gm is similar to RJ. We need a shooter scorer to complement RJabd Randle. Obrue is just another attack off the ball player. Fournier, Powell much better fits. Not big on Obrue, sorry. Sign Dinwiddie and (Powell or Fournier). And move up draft for Kuminga. Now that’s a serious team with a big future.
RJ is already much better than Oubre, IMO.
Maybe the market dries and he’s available for less than mid level. Only then would I want to see NY look in that direction. Kelly is an 8th man to me. Not a starter.
Sign and trade Oubre for Goran Dragic, Dejounte Murray or Derrick White lets goooo
You really think the Suns could get Dejounte for Kelly?! That’s laughable.
Suns? Oubre is on the Warriors – but plus a pick, of course! But Dragic is probably the best fit out of the 3 tbh. You dont even know Oubre’s current team, maybe lay off the “laughable” if you can’t even spit facts to begin with.
I rather Wiggins than Obrue. But for Knicks we don’t really need to make a big trade. Personally I only give up picks to move up draft. I know there will be opportunities for Knicks. Trade. draft, FA just do it right . With eye to the future. There are no Quick fixes.
Saw a story about Lakers wanting D Rose. I want him back . But I don’t want to overpay to keep him. Love Rose but if he wants a ring with Bron. EEeeyyyy
go for it. We are still a few yrs away in NY.

Kuminga or Mitchell …… NYK. NYK
I agree, KNICKS shouldn’t get too excited – to their credit, it seems that Leon Rose and company are not.
Build on this season’s mild success, using Thibs’ formula of tough-defense minded players. Don’t splurge just because they can.
Who knows, the next few years, a legit FA superstar might choose the KNICKS.
Agree 100%
Keep Duncan and Nunn cap hold 9.5 million
Heat have $24 million salary cap room
Sign Dragic and Oubre $12 million each
Heat have to get rid of Oladipo, Ariza and Iggy
Oubre gets pay cut
Oladipo will be homeless?no way
Dipo won’t be homeless, maybe he can get a trailer home near OKC.
The Knicks can’t seriously consider any wing player that can’t hit the 3 at a level of at least 38%. Today, 31% isn’t middling, it’s a joke. Oubre has the physical skills to be an elite defender, but he lacks the necessary discipline and toughness. He simply not an upgrade from what they have.
The Suns dumped Oubre and started winning. There’s no evidence the Oubre drives winning. Below avg PER, other stats.
Spurs have Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Lonnie Walker, but Derozan could leave Otherwise, why.
What an odd coincidence, huh? The Warriors won’t get anything decent in return for Oubre in a sign and trade, the best they can hope for is Oladipo.
He also has been saying he expects $20 million a year. Good luck on that.
Kelly Oubre is just Michael Beasley with a 28-30mpg run. There’s not much difference between them, neither is a piece I’d build around at 20M per.
Beasley was not a good defender.
Funny how y’all in this site diss non-stop KOJ… but the FO’s in the league all like him, right?
Mmmhhh… makes you think who knows more ’bout the game, the guys who get paid the big $ for it or the armchair managers?
I know where I would put my money, right?
Maybe y’all should contact the team owners to get rid of the useless dudes like Pops, Riley & so on, & hire you to run their teams, success will be assured!
Tsunami Papi? Is that you?
His PER was 13.3 and DeMar was 22.0.
Riley hasnt had 100% batting average you know. Dion Waiters, Hassan Whiteside, Tyler Johnson all contracts of immediate regret.
Pops track record is better, but he doesn’t overpay players. If Oubre is signed to that low end 12M okay probably not a bad deal for Spurs. It’s about allocating dollars wisely, and spending 20M on this dude is unwise.
I’m not saying I know more than you, but any player who routinely passed up an open Steph Curry in his best-ever shooting season probably should be dissed as often as possible.
How do you know the FO’s in the league all like him? Reports that they do? Not a good source of objective information, really, because they’re really just what FO’s want to put out there.
A better source would be to look at the actual trades he’s been a part of. Wiz accepted Ariza on an expiring deal for him, and that was before he made any $$. PHX didn’t give him more than 2 years, and then used him as a matching contract in the Paul deal. OKC couldn’t get a real 1st for him (only a heavily protected on that is now a 2nd), even from GSW who desperately wanted to add a front line player. Nothing in the actual deal or FA markets, to date, indicates this guy is highly thought of.
Spurs going to be a better fit for him to get his #’s but should go wherever he will he happiest
Reminds me a bit of a younger Rudy Gay. Maybe signing with the Spurs and replacing Rudy is the best move for him. Pop helped with Rudy’s career renaissance, possibly could did the same for a younger Oubre.
Not to be disrespectful to you but I won’t let the disrespect to Rudy Gay pass without saying something. Rudy Gay has been a top-notch professional and high efficiency scorer for many, many years in the NBA. He can create his own shot, he can drive, he can shoot from distance and he’s a willing passer and great defender. Rudy Gay is the ultimate professional and is a quiet third star for many years and even in his mid-30s he’s pretty productive. Kelly Oubre is no Rudy Gay that’s for sure.
There’s been quite a bit of bashing of Kelly oubre here in this comment section but you know what, he does have a lot of grit and he does provide intensity at times, it’s just not consistent. He will go to the hole hard and that’s something the Warriors have lacked. Acrobatic dunks from the wing flying in on the break is an element that was fantastic this year. Rebound putback dunks and the like.
I think Kelly Oubre was the best the Warriors could get to try to bring in 17 to 20 points a night when Klay Thompson went down. For a second round draft pick I think Kelly performed just fine and was a good teammate. Do I hope the Warriors re-sign him? No thanks they can upgrade a bit, but good luck Kelly Oubre, thanks for a pretty good year of service.
Oubre is highly skilled and is great around the rim and at dunking and defense, but on offense, the amount of times we watched him this year act like he wasn’t on the floor with the greatest player he will ever play with, routinely choosing to brick shots while Stephen threw his hands in the air like “cmon man I’m open”, was far too much to bear for a fan, and much-deserving of disrespect. Not to mention the constant showboating! Low IQ gameplay+showboating = no go, for most fans.
Kelly Olynyk > Kelly Oubre
I think about this a lot, GSW might still be playing if Olynyk played this season for GSW (without injury).
Oubre does not sound like a player the Spurs would be after.
“Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports.”
Well, that explains that.
