Warriors big man Kevon Looney is picking up his $5.1MM option for next season, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 25-year-old averaged 4.1 points and 5.3 rebounds this season as a part-time starter. He split time in the starting lineup with rookie center James Wiseman and took over the job after Wiseman was injured in April.
Looney has spent six years with Golden State after being taken with the 30th pick in the 2015 draft. He’s a 56.6% shooter from the floor in his career and played significant minutes on the Warriors teams that reached the NBA Finals for five straight seasons.
Looney’s player option was the only one facing the team for 2021/22.
Looney 8th man
Anderson 9th man
Poole 10th man
Warriors need 5th, 6th 7th man
Trade Wiseman, 7 and 14 for players
Poole is the 6th man off the bench. he was averaging almost 20 points a game the second half. JTA is Green’s back up.
I love the Loon-dawg, sky-high IQ, great gamer, was awesome down the stretch when GSW’s front office refused to win and use the DPE – if he didn’t have the body of a 43 year old man he’d be a big name in this league, but as a rotation piece he’s great. He’d be especially great as the #2 C option.
I was also surprised to learn he’s only 25
He would be a great backup center, if he could stay healthy for more than 56 games each season. $5M is a bit high for a 3rd string player.
@Wally uh oh someone doesn’t watch the warriors and wants to talk like they know ;)
What’s to watch, a bunch of overrated has-beens? It doesn’t change the fact that Looney misses about 25 games a year on average.
Kind of like to re-Sign Marquese Chriss. He is way more explosive and can actually Finish near the rim.
Looney’s hips and injuries have him grounded. He can’t jump anymore.
Give me a tandem of Wiseman and Chriss, like we were hoping to get last season. I’m okay with Looney as an Insurance option behind those two.
Wiseman is trade bait. He doesn’t fit Steph’s timeline.
I get that, but then why didn’t they trade that pick for some help last season instead of taking Wiseman?
I tell you what.. it wasn’t because they didn’t try. But they’re not going to deal a potential fantastic player for a crummy return. They know his value and so does the league and a trade will happen this off season for sure. They’re not going to burn another year of Steph.
Ted that was Gary’s question last year… except he was done asking and into guaranteeing!
There was so much Myers could have done, but he did the conventional and minimal and Kerr stressed defense to prepare themselves for the next run. They held the MIN pick so a half-tank was enough.
looney has a hard time playing against much taller Centers. He will always be a bench guy on the second team.
Not surprised with his stats I’ll be surprised if he got 5 mill in the open market. Take your money and run
He’s a solid role player with experience and leadership. He will be in the league for another 10 years.
Not for anywhere near 5 mill again…
BTW havin’ one of the most fragile bodies in the league, I think he will be long gone in 10 years, right?
He’d be crazy not to
