7:45pm: The Mavs have had discussions with longtime Nike executive Nico Harrison about joining the front office, MacMahon tweets. Harrison has been pursued for front office jobs by other teams, MacMahon adds. He would work in tandem with current front office exec Michael Finley.
6:35pm: The Mavericks have begun contract negotiations with Kidd, Marc Stein of the New York Times tweets.
6:00pm: Jason Kidd has emerged as the strong frontrunner for the Mavericks’ head coaching job, Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon of ESPN tweet. Dallas is also close to hiring a new president of basketball operations, Woj adds.
The New York Times reported earlier in the day Kidd was a prime candidate to replace longtime coach Rick Carlisle.
The Mavs are expected to name a replacement for former president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson before hiring a head coach. Owner Mark Cuban and his unnamed choice to replace Nelson have held in-depth discussions about the coaching job and Kidd’s candidacy is supported by Dirk Nowitzki and others advising Cuban, MacMahon tweets. Nowitzki was recently named a special advisor to Cuban.
Kidd received an endorsement on Thursday from Carlisle, who coached Kidd from 2008-12. Carlisle, who was named the Pacers’ head coach on Thursday, believes there are many similarities between Kidd during his playing days and current star Luka Doncic.
Kidd interviewed for the Magic head coaching job after pulling himself out of the running for the Trail Blazers’ job.
Kidd’s record as a head coach — one season with the Nets and three-plus seasons with the Bucks — is 183-190. He was fired by Milwaukee midway through the 2017/18 campaign. He’s been one of the Lakers’ top assistants under Frank Vogel the last two seasons.
the stars are aligning in Dallas
I love this move Dallas and Luka Doncic. Theres been a lot of recent bad pub for the prospects of signing Luka to supermax. This has to move the needle back to their favor
Yes go ahead and bring in Kidd and continue to Kid yourselves he is a difference maker of a coach.
I’m concerned that Luka and Porzingis can’t get along with Kidd within one year
All 3 have very strong personality
Mavs can easily solve the problem by trading away Luka though
You should be banned for suggesting trading Luka. Dumbest comment ever
Lol I was like, are you serious!?
Carlisle giving Kidd an endorsement might be all the proof we need that he really is angry at the Mavs…
If Cuban is half as clever as he says he is, and if Dončić is emotionally mature and professional enough to be coached by a woman, Becky Hammon would’ve cashed a big paycheck in Dallas already.
Cuban talks a big game online about diversity and inclusiveness but he goes ahead and hires another white guy here. One that’s a proven failure as a coach.
Kidd is biracial FYI
Yeah, seriously a dude, he hired a minority who is a proven failure, get your facts straight.
5 years of HC coaching experience with 3 playoff appearances is a TOTAL failure nowadays? People can improve on their past mistakes.
I love Becky as a Spurs fan, but I’m not sure this was the right situation for her. Her time will come. But with an underachieving Mavs team commanded by a heliocentric PG and meddling owner? I wouldn’t want any part of that for her or any other rookie HC.
Still think the Kidd signing is bad, but it’s at least a better fit in that regard.
Best for Becky
If the DAL situation is so bad, then why object so thouroughly to Kidd’s mention for the job? By this logic, Kidd is perfect here. And now you know who you want to root against.
Carlisle says Kidd fits with Doncic and knows everyone involved.
You would think that the Mavericks would seek to hire a head coach with considerable professional experience.
Not just some KIDD !!
I saw you at the comedy club last Tuesday at 6 pm and you were horrible there too. Make sure you keep your regular day job.
Go timberwolves though. Their future looks bright if they play it correctly. High hopes for them they have a lot of good pieces.
Timberpuppies may have pieces.
What they don’t have is a Team.
And the chemistry and roster make-up that creates a:
Winner.
BTW = No day job, RETIRED.
So I can focus FULL TIME on Comedy !!
“BTW = No day job, RETIRED.
So I can focus FULL TIME on Comedy !!”
I think that actually makes it worse. Not that your joke was that bad. I’ve seen much, much worse here and elsewhere.
But I agree that it was a bad hire.
I would have thought with Mark Cuban the owner that Becky Hammon would have been the choice here. Of all the openings this was her spot.
Nope, Cuban has been a Dallas owner to long. Cuban doesn’t know Becky. If she was an assistant coach under Carlisle instead of Greg all those years then maybe. Cuban is hiring his his friends he can trust right now. Very Jerry like move imo.
Elton Brand GM
This is exactly what Luca needs if Cuban will stay out of the way and allow Kidd to take control. Like I said a few days ago, Luca needs the following: someone who will not put up with him being out of shape, someone who has lived and believes in hard work as a player and most importantly someone that believes in TEAM first. Whether or not Luca will accept coaching that holds him accountable is any ones guess. If he does, he will be one of the greatest players ever. If he doesn’t the Mavs will not advance in the playoffs as long as he is in Dallas.
“Like I said a few days ago, Luca needs the following: someone who will not put up with him being out of shape, someone who has lived and believes in hard work as a player and most importantly someone that believes in TEAM first.”
You don’t know anything about the Mavs, do you? You literally just described the type of HC Carlisle is. And the prevailing thought is that he left precisely because he realized coaching Luka was going to be impossible, especially with a meddling owner and messy front office power-sharing situation headlined by Cuban’s new man crush. What makes you feel confident about that situation?
If anything, Kidd is much more likely to play the possum role and treat Luka with kid gloves while doing whatever the front office and Cuban wants. I’d put solid money down on that. Kidd, by all accounts, is nothing more than a yes man looking to get paid and get back into the game as a HC. Lucky him.
Are we talking about the same Kidd that forced his way out of Brooklyn because he wanted more control? The guy that declined an interview with the Blazers for whatever reason? He’s a puppet that will just go with the flow? Huh?
Step1: Piss off your franchise superstar by hiring and encouraging an overreaching front office member.
Step 2: Undermine your GM through a stupid power-sharing situation with said overreaching individual.
Step 3: Cause your long-time and well-respected HC to leave for a lateral job because he sees the writing on the wall and wants no part of what is happening.
Step 4?
Whether you like Cuban or not, he’s taken some massive and arguably ill-advised gambles here. If this doesn’t work out, he should take 150% of the heat. And the early dividends are not good.
But I am curious. For the difficult-to-understand Kidd fans out there who aren’t just stans from his playing days, what makes you think he was the right guy for the job given his underachieving previous stints in the NBA and off-court issues? I think it’s pretty telling that virtually all of the other NBA HC vacancies didn’t bother to look at this guy, save for one comment from Lillard. I don’t see it.
Teams are probably avoiding the controversy, not necessarily the Kidd.
Look at that, he’s good for puns.
I suppose you ain’t a christian, as you seem to hold on to people’s past mistakes, which they do not have anythin’ to do with the job they are doin’, right?
I mean we must forgive & forget, God does it all the time for us, right?
El Don you’re a brother? Glory to God !!
But remember it’s more than just “forgiveness.” He PAID it !! If it was just about forgiveness he would have never gone to the cross. Jesus would have just snapped his fingers and said, “you’re forgiven and you’re forgiven and you’re forgiven” and stayed clean and had his hair nice and perfect and no scars or blood or all day suffering on a wooden cross.
JESUS PAID OR I WILL.
Good luck with Kidd, MAVS fans.
