There are quite a few head coaching jobs Rick Carlisle could pursue after parting ways with the Mavericks on Thursday. He may even wind up with a team that still has a head coach. There have been rumblings that if the Bucks fire Mike Budenholzer, Carlisle could be his replacement, Marc Stein of the New York Times tweets. The rumors about Carlisle taking over an Eastern Conference playoff contender and becoming Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s coach have been circulating for weeks, Stein adds.
We have more info on the Mavs:
- Prior to the news of Carlisle’s departure, Luka Doncic addressed the organization’s decision this week to remove Donnie Nelson as president of basketball operations and expressed his disappointment, Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News relays. “It was kind of tough to me,” Doncic said during a press conference in Slovenia. “I really like Donnie. [I’ve known] him since I was a kid and he was the one that drafted me. It was tough to me, seeing that, but I’m not the one making decisions there.” Doncic is practicing with his national team for the Olympic qualifying tournament later this month.
- Despite Nelson’s dismissal, Doncic still intends to sign a super-max extension before next season, Tim Cato and Sam Amick of The Athletic hear. Doncic strongly hinted after the season he would sign his rookie scale extension, which would be worth a projected $201.5MM over five years after making the All-NBA team two straight years.
- The Mavericks have hired Mike Forde’s Sportsology, a consulting firm frequently used by NBA teams, to assist in the search for a new head of basketball operations., Tim MacMahon of ESPN tweets. Nine NBA teams have either hired or promoted from within a new chief basketball executive in the past two seasons and three of those searches— Pelicans, Wizards, and Kings —were led by Forde, Yaron Weitzman of The Ringer noted earlier this year.
- Former Mavericks All-Star Michael Finley, currently the team’s VP of basketball operations, has emerged as a candidate to replace Nelson, Stein tweets.
- The team’s decision to take Josh Green over Saddiq Bey in last year’s draft frustrated a number of key executives and scouts., Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman tweets. Green was selected at No. 18 and the Pistons snapped up Bey, who was named to the All-Rookie First Team, with the next pick. The Mavs’ analytics team wanted Green and won the debate.

Green over Bey might be the only dumber move than Wiseman over Ball or Haliburton. Dallas in shambles internally.
lol.. you are MUCH worse as a basketball fan than Wiseman or Josh Green are at playing the game. Much much worse. And playing basketball is much harder than being a fan. Spend less time hating
He’s not a fan. Just a frustrated Homer. Doesn’t care about Balling. Who in their right mind takes anyone over Wiseman. Plenty passed on Bey. One of most NBA ready players. That’s what falling for upside gets you. Green was never about this yr. I agree let’s give him time.
Wiseman still has a lot to prove, he could easily be another Oden.
Fact you say that shows your incompetence. Wiseman will be one of best centers in NBA. Only injuries can stop that. What you should know. Is the kid has a high IQ. He’s an intelligent person. So he will learn to use his size and gifts. Anyone who judges a 19 yr old. Should really just follow tennis. Men don’t mature till their mid 20s. Why would any real fan want to see failure. As much as I can’t stand Harden. I wish he was healthy. I’m not a hater. I love this gm.
What are you even talking about? Literally every poster on this site is worse at posting than any NBA player is at basketball. What a stupid thing to say, when you are just hurt that I am right because you cannot stand any true analysis of your fave team that you will never ever think does a thing wrong.
My point makes perfect sense. GSW would have been a top 4 team had they drafted Ball or Haliburton over Wiseman, and Dallas would have gone further in the playoffs had they had Bey instead of Green. It’s called analysis, sweetie, look it up. But you can also mute it if you are too stupid to understand the difference between hating and analysis. Your call.
I had Green and Tyler Bey as great fits/options for Dallas at 18, but I also thought Saddiq Bey would be long gone by then. Saddiq is more of a 4/3, where Josh Green is more of a wing, and there were other options at that 4 spot later in the draft, so you could argue it made sense, especially if they hadnt expected Saddiq to be there for them either, which might scramble your draft approach…
I think it’s hard to criticize the pick when the Mavs were positive with him on the floor, and he didnt play as much as he should have
Also the fact that he’s still very young, very athletic, has good size & has potential to be a really good all around 2guard. Saddiq been 1 of my favorite players ever since his freshman yr & I def had him going earlier but we’re only 1 season into these guys careers. Josh & Tyrell Terry both could very well be starting alongside Luka for years to come once they gain more experience & continue to tighten their game up
Ya, Saddiq Bey was obviously someone you knew would be an option early on. 1 year after a draft doesmt really make sense to talk about messing up a pick when there was no summer league, and when that guy played, he played well
Jason Kidd ??
Need to make a trade aswell to please Luka and refreshed the team.
I am so glad the Rockets hired Stephen Silas instead of Doc Rivers.
I think to appreciate Bey you would have had to see him with the crowd revved up and he kind of the ringmaster of the tumult.
When broken down, skillswise, he was not that skilled. Easy to see why an analytics team would find flaws.
“Virile”-type players benefit from advocacy by conference media or regional followers, such as with DraymontG.
Saddiq Bey only made the first team All Rookie because he was in Detroit. He had opportunity to shine there. In Dallas, he would not have had the same opportunity to play nearly 30 minutes a game and may have ended up playing 11 minutes a game just like Josh Green. And Josh Green may have been All Rookie if had the opportunity in Detroit instead of being glued to the bench in Dallas. People forget that these guys are real people in really different situations, not just stat sheets that can readily be moved from team to team.
What’s truly amazing is how long Rick Carlisle lasted so long (even with the championship season). And what a tragedy it would be if he resurfaces in Milwaukee… Giannis is a great guy and he deserves a proper coach.
Luka does need to share the ball. Hardaway is not worth the money. Better off with a sign n trade. If you can do it. FA Powell at SG much better fit, cheaper. KP has no trade value now. If you do t put girth on him. He will not last in this league. Drummond is a better fit at Center with Luka. Cheaper too. Mavs have no picks. So limited in their options to build around Luka. Need some luck.
The Mavs time atop of the SW Division will be short-lived.
At least they should be better than the Pelicans in 2022, maybe the Spurs.
Another foolish comment by you. The only thing more certain than the Mavs winning this division is how big of a gap there will be between the 4th place team and the laughingstock Rockets. When you inevitably change your user name again maybe “Lastforadecade”
THJ and Powell probably get around the same $.
Powell is not.a free agent
Player option. He’s a FA …….
Tim just made over 15 mill. He wants more. Powell would gladly take 15 mill. Powell a better shooter and Much better defender. Thibs will probably go after him. He’s high on his list

Mavs are using the firm that helped the kings, wiz and pellies find their gm? That does not bode well
Dallas lost to clips in the bubble because of kawhi. Mavs lost again this year to clips because of kawhi. Maybe they should of drsfted a 3 and d guy that could guard the likes of kawhi like drafting saddiq bey…. but wait we drsft an atheltic wing who isnt that great of a dunker. Josh green at one point in the year had his shot blocked more than fgs made
