There’s an expectation among league personnel that the Warriors will consider shopping one or both of their lottery picks if they receive the Timberwolves’ first-round selection in tonight’s lottery, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. However, Fischer says the club has had no serious internal talks about the possibility of trading young center James Wiseman.
Appearing on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Warriors owner Joe Lacob confirmed that the Dubs aren’t looking to move Wiseman, stating that it’s “very unlikely” the club will entertain offers for the 20-year-old this offseason. While Lacob didn’t close the door entirely on the possibility, he said it would “take a lot” for Golden State to consider such a move, adding that the team would have to be blown away.
Discussing the decision to select Wiseman at No. 2 in last year’s draft over LaMelo Ball, among others, Lacob acknowledged that Ball had a great rookie season in Charlotte, but said that he remains confident Wiseman can be an “All-Star level player,” noting that nothing he saw in 2020/21 diminished that belief.
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- In his interview with Kawakami, Lacob repeatedly mentioned the repeater tax penalties facing the Warriors going forward, stressing that it’s impractical for the team to continue increasing its payroll indefinitely. However, he didn’t rule out using Golden State’s taxpayer mid-level exception this offseason, and Fischer says there aren’t internal concerns about the club’s growing tax bill.
- The Warriors have interest in retaining Kelly Oubre, but a sign-and-trade remains a viable possibility, according to Fischer, who reports that multiple Spurs players seem eager to add Oubre. Fischer also identifies the Mavericks as a team that may have interest in the veteran forward, citing sources who say Dallas approached the Warriors prior to the trade deadline about a deal involving Oubre and Kristaps Porzingis. It’s unclear whether the Mavs’ front office shakeup would affect their level of interest in Oubre, Fischer adds.
- Asked by Kawakami about the possibility of a Stephen Curry extension this offseason, Lacob declined to speculate on whether a deal will get done, but stated that he expects the two-time MVP to spend the rest of his career with the Warriors, noting that both sides want that to happen.
Wiseman is not available
If you want to trade for him, you need to overpay
Lillard is not available. If you want him, you need to overpay like this
Paul George for Shia, Gallo and 6 future Firsts
Really.I never would have guessed that from reading the article.
Wiseman IS available, at the right price. No question.
Real question is do they keep Draymond
Why would they trade Draymond? That doesn’t make any sense.
Players value is not the same as accounting
Overpaid players are assets, not the liabilities
Draymond and Ben Simmons are overpaid but they are assets
In other words, overpaid players have positive trade value because ……
Why would you want to trade Draymond? This has nothing to do with accounting. You create a huge whole in their offense and defense.
Draymond is extremely valuable, but his poor shooting is a real drag on the offense unless ALL FOUR of the players around him are shooters. Looney isn’t, and Wiseman is not ready to be a starter. Best solution is to get a Center or Stretch PF who can shoot, but failing that . . .
When a FO or owner says their team is not trading a guy unless they’re “blown away” it likely means they’re listening to offers, but don’t like any of them. It’s really not that hard to just say “we’re not trading JW”. The only reason not to say it is so potential trade partners don’t refrain from submitting offers.
The appropriate ‘adage’ is:
‘Don’t ever turn down a deal you haven’t heard yet’
Nobody will take that skinny Latvian cat unless he put on some weight and tough it out. Dude always hurt, looks soft is if he’s playing in Euroleague! You ain’t no KD so grow some and get yo ass into that paint!
“Fischer says there aren’t internal concerns about the club’s growing tax bill.”
Hear that? Exactly. I was right all along, and the morons who post in here worrying about GSW’s finances were massively wrong and obviously trolling all along. Shut up forever now about this topic, please.
That said, KP for Oubre actually is a good deal for both sides and both teams should make that move. If they aren’t blowing smoke about Wiseman then Wiggins is the #1 guy to get traded, and he’s a nice chip to have on any playoff contender, so Id assume GSW will make a deal there. Also can’t really play Klay and Wiggins together, they contradict each others game.
The appropriate ‘adage’ is:
‘Don’t ever turn down a deal you haven’t heard yet’
Wiggins is “…a nice chip to have on any playoff contender”
So why would The Dubs trade him after he had ‘a career year’, proved he could ‘fit’ with the team. How (and why) would you replace that?
You also say “…can’t really play Klay and Wiggins together, they contradict each others game” … so you mean like they (you?) said about Klay when KD came to the team? How’d that work out?
Klay is guileless, a true baller, gym rat, and All Star and will do whatever it takes for the team to win.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget what a remarkable team they’ve been over the recent Championship runs. Steph, Dray, Klay … Wiggs and The Kid, are a good start for the next 5 years. Go from there.
GSW would trade him because he makes too much money and they could use trading Wiggins to obtain an even better player than him. I know NBA media has mushed so many peoples minds that nuance is hard to ascertain, but it still exists: a player can be both great but also not a player who is the best fit for a team, especially a team with huge money tied up between 3 guys already. We just saw how GSW having no depth looks, and Wiggins contributed to that with his massive salary, handcuffing them from getting other players (apparently).
Wiggins is a great player and he had a great year, but will he fit on the reconstructed Warriors? Remains to be seen. I’m on the fence with flipping over the roster minus the big 3 and JTA, but I agree with you on Klay and expect him to play 40+ minutes in the next playoffs, after starting out at around 20 and then building up. He’s a legend and a HOFer in his prime, coming off sitting out 2 seasons, he’s going to be absolutely lethal next season. Thing is, GSW has to still win those early games where he won’t be used as much – therein lies where the keeping Wiggins argument, at least for this season (maybe move him in-season if Klay comes back strong).
But why on earth would you comp Wiggins and KD? They aren’t even remotely the same player and they did not play the same role around Steph, so, weird and irrelevant point to bring up there – L for you. Tone was a bit confrontational too, like, you didnt prove anything here other than to say “remember how great Klay is? GSW might not need to add anyone really, just use the draft+Klay” which is a less confrontational way to state it.
“He makes too much money . . . ”
EXACTLY. That’s why his value in deal is significantly LESS than his value on the court. We’d take a hit because the other team is taking on a $22 million player with a $32 million salary.
As soon as the mute button comes to mobile I won’t be seeing your comments anymore, and boy am I looking forward to it
Wiseman is the future and much better prospect than LaMello. He’s not going anywhere. But if Warriors luck out with picks. There will be a team willing to trade with them. KP to Warriors is not a bad idea. Especially for a guy you don’t want anyway. Warriors have plenty options. They should be in no rush to do anything. Just get healthy and wait all the playoffs losers out. Someone will make a move.
Wiseman will have a good future but the time is now for GS to get back to the Finals. If GS can get an impact player for Wiseman now. I’d make the trade.
They got the picks to trade. They don’t need rookies. Plus Obrue sign n trade. Even Wiggins to move, They are in a good place imo. I see them making a trade draft night. Those two picks are solid picks for a rebuilding team. Wiseman is the next great big. He can help them now.
Wiseman MIGHT BE the next great big. He has potential, has shown flashes, but he’s a LONG way from there now.
Wiseman isn’t going anywhere unless you over pay and warriors get some future picks! Kelly will be sign and trade to a team that’s for sure! But Kelly for KP is good to the ear but on paper $$ has to match. KP is getting 30m. Kelly just ended 18 mill contract
KO S&T not at all sure. Several teams have plenty of money to sign him outright, and he is UFA so he can just walk. SAS seem to want him, and NYK & DAL are both good teams with plenty of cap space. I HOPE we can work a S&T, but I am doubtful.
Wiseman is absolutely available. Not at the bargain-basement price some people are suggesting, but for the right deal, absolutely.
Oubre for Porzingis? Guess that’s one of those “change of scenery” trades that if the new scenery benefits a player, it’s worth it. I otherwise don’t see the value in it from the Mavs POV.
Better than NOTHING for Oubre, which is quite possible, including with Dallas, since they’ll have ample cap room, but not my favorite option.
Warriors has to decide this offseason whether to trade their 2 first rounders and Wiseman, or go full rebuild and trade away Curry, Draymond, and even Klay.
“full rebuild”! … really?
The Warriors have been patterning themselves after The Spurs … and how long have they been ‘contenders’? … 20+ years? Is that a problem?
“full rebuild” lol no, try “reload for 5 more straight finals appearances” – did you not see Steph last season? He was absolutely ridiculous – no comp is possible, no ones ever been on fire that hard for that long before. A full season of the human torch burning everyone with pick n rolls is going to give us an historic year – so lets get him a better supporting cast so he can play in the playoffs again, eh?
Steph, Klay, and (probably) Draymond are untouchable, unless they REQUEST it, which seems very unlikely.
