Jason Kidd, who has reached a deal to become Dallas’ new head coach, may not be the only former Mavericks point guard patrolling the team’s sidelines in 2021/22. According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN (Twitter link), J.J. Barea has had preliminary discussions about the possibility of joining Kidd’s coaching staff.
Barea has no formal coaching experience, having played in the NBA up until last year and in international leagues during the 2020/21 season. However, as MacMahon observes, the veteran guard has strong relationships with many members of the Mavericks’ organization – including Luka Doncic – and the team missed his presence this past season.
Another member of that 2011 Mavericks title team is also a candidate to join Kidd’s staff, according to Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News, who tweets that Jason Terry is in the mix for a role.
Here’s more from around the Western Conference:
- The Timberwolves have issued a press release announcing Chris Finch‘s front bench assistants for the 2021/22 season. Joseph Blair and Pablo Prigioni will return, while the team has also added Micah Nori, as was rumored earlier this month. Nori spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach in Detroit.
- Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said today that he’s been reaching out to teams with head coaching vacancies to advocate for his assistant coach Wes Unseld Jr. (Twitter link via Mike Singer of The Athletic). Unseld has been bypassed in past coaching searches, but Malone said he believes that’s “going to change this summer.”
- Anthony Slater of The Athletic weighs what the Warriors could do with the No. 7 and No. 14 picks in this year’s draft, exploring scenarios in which they trade up, move down, or deal one or both of their selections for veteran help.
- Within a mailbag for The Athletic, Jovan Buha tries to determine what a fair deal for Lakers UFA-to-be Dennis Schröder might look like, suggesting he’d be fine with $20MM per year on a shorter-term contract, but would be hesitant to go that high for four years.
Now there’s the Mavericks coach of the future. Jason Kidd doesn’t work out JJ Barea might be primed and ready to step in at that time in the future?
Barea always lurking in Dallas for a veteran minimum or a job. Dude can’t get anything going somewhere else.
He’s rich. What are you?
Better than you!!
um, can’t get anything going? have you seen who he has dated and currently with, miss universe puerto rico viviana ortiz. he’s doing just fine.
Top 6 picks are locked
Scottie Barnes at 6
Warriors traded DLo for Wiggins, Davion Mitchell and Oubre Bird right
Mavs really like to sign free agent Kelly Oubre.
Mavs have $16 million cap room if they get rid of Tim Hardaway Jr
No thanks
I’d take THJ over Oubre any day
What I mean
Reporters don’t know Mavs have no cap room to sign Kelly Oubre
Salary cap is scary low at $112 million
I wonder what Kidd thinks of KP. Does he stay or go?
Youre a donut, mavs have almost enough to sign a player to a max contract. Get yo facts straight
Kidd seems like a good signing.
Not sure about how many picks Dallas have but what about this for a trade situation for the offseason.
KP for Ibaka and Beverly
Clippers would have to free up some cap space in order to make the deal work. Ibaka hasn’t worked out and Beverly regressed this year big time. KP wasn’t dominant but still had some really good numbers through the regular season at at 25 could easily get better.
Mavs with the little bit of extra cap space created by this trade, release the rights to Hardaway Jr, JRich, Reddick, WCS and Markanovic which creates enough money for a max offer for Kawhi Leonard.
All of a sudden Dallas has a line up of Beverly Doncic Kawhi Kleber Ibaka and have Brunson Green DFS Melli all on the bench. Dallas has a great defence, two MVP candidates, still good enough shooters for spacing, and a decent young bench. Being in Dallas, with Kidd as coach, and with Doncic and Kawhi you would also be a favourable landing spot for vets willing to take the minimum. Imagine then adding JaVale McGee, Wesley Mathews and Garrett Temple.
1. Pat Beverly. Brunson. Burke
2. Luka Doncic. Mathews. Green
3. Kawhi Leonard. DFS. Temple
4. Maxi Kleber. Melli.
5. Serge Ibaka. McGee. Powell
This side would be a top 5 favourite for a ring next season
Ibaka hasn’t worked out??? That’s cause he got hurt. he’d be playing lots of healthy
undersized lineup.
Sorry Russ but in my opinion swapping a star like KP6 for a couple of old bums like Beverley & Ibaka is a definite no go!!!
Also don’t forget that DAL was a top 5 in the WC this year, so you changing the whole team to stay pat at the same place of this year!
BTW like x%sure I don’t like the idea of piling superstars to win, is not good for them, Luka is the best ’cause he does 29/9/9 per game, if you bring Kawhi his numbers will drop dramatically & then he won’t be contending for the MVP, which makes the move pointless in my opinion!
Ur a donut. Stop playing 2k. If leonard truly did tear his acl, he would opt in into his player option.
Could the T Pups with first round players from the past. Trade into the first round?
