Sign-and-trade deals are expected to be plentiful this summer and the largest one could involve Hawks forward John Collins, writes Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. Most contenders have limited cap flexibility, so league insiders are expecting the sign-and-trade option to be used with several of the top free agents.
Collins, a restricted free agent, could be on the move because of the perception that Atlanta doesn’t view him as a max player. Team owner Tony Ressler said last week that the team is hoping to reach a “fair agreement” with Collins, which raises questions about how high the Hawks would be willing to go to match an offer.
League sources tell Fischer there will be a “sizable market” for Collins once free agency begins next month. The Mavericks have been considered a possible destination for some time, and the Timberwolves are another team to watch, according to Fischer.
He shares some more rumors involving potential sign-and-trades:
- Dennis Schröder turned down a four-year, $84MM extension offer from the Lakers and is expected to be on the move this summer. Fischer notes that Schröder wants a bigger salary and a larger role in the offense, but he’s not likely to get either in L.A. The Bulls and Knicks are expected to have interest in the veteran point guard, according to league sources, and a sign-and-trade is the Lakers’ best opportunity to add talent this offseason. L.A. will also continue to see what it can get in return for Kyle Kuzma, Fischer adds.
- The Sixers remain interested in Raptors guard Kyle Lowry and he’s believed to welcome the chance to play for his hometown team. Several contenders will have their eyes on Philadelphia guard Danny Green, who represents another sign-and-trade opportunity.
- Giving P.J. Tucker a new deal with the $12MM average salary he asked for in Houston would push the Bucks over the tax apron. Fischer states that the Nets have been interested in Tucker since they started negotiating the James Harden trade, and the Heat expressed interest as well when they talked to the Rockets about Victor Oladipo. Fischer identifies the Lakers, Warriors, Nuggets and Jazz as other teams to watch, along with the Timberwolves, who are led by former Houston executive Gersson Rosas and have been trying to acquire Tucker since the 2020 draft.
- Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie and Warriors forward Kelly Oubre are two other potential names on the sign-and-trade market, according to Fischer. Sources say Brooklyn kept Dinwiddie past the trade deadline so he could be a potential sign-and-trade asset, while Oubre offers a chance for tax-strapped Golden State to pick up talent. Fischer names the Mavericks, Knicks and Heat as teams that would be interested in both players.
Schroeder dumb as hell for turning down 4/84 smh Acuna Jr makes way less.
One thing to keep in mind is while he might not top it, he may be able to match. Also if he signs somewhere with a better tax than LA then it will all balance out and if he’s getting a bigger role it’s a win win for him. Worth the risk I think for a player of his caliber.
Player of this caliber? You mean a bench player who’s ego thinks he is a starter? Guy was terrible for lakers both offensively and defensively. He will be lucky to get 20 million a year
You were super excited when they signed him Tats.
Lol @ comparing mlb salaries to nba salaries.
Might get 5/100
I just don’t see Dennis topping that 4/84
Perhaps a team goes 2/48 or something innovative but I don’t see how you commit 4 years here with a ton of ??? attached
It only takes 1 but damn what a bad “last” look he showed vs PHX entering free agency…. complete DGAF attitude ……4 years of potentially that? That could be your job if your the one with the ink on your hands when it drys
The Laker offer and situation was top notch. Kid done f’d up.
I think Dennis himself is going to concur with your statement here in about 3 months
Maybe the first half, but the situation in LA is hardly top notch.
Maybe he’s not happy in LA? Sometimes guys value options over money? Maybe he has unofficial offers that are better? We just won’t know until he signs. Even then it’s hard to say what he’ll turn down when it’s all said and done.
I would think he’d want a stable environment. The Lakers never seem to be satisfied. Not a bad thing but not for everyone.
He’ s all about the Benny’s but I hear what your saying on the rest
It was a bad signing by the Lakers. All they need is a PG that can pass to AD or LeBron and play some defense. Not terribly difficult.
Patty Mills should be on their list. His defense isn’t the same and was never elite but he’s a smart player with a nice shot and solid passing ability, though I’m sure several teams are interested in his services as a veteran PG
DS did provide an alternate offense that needed litle help; call it the Rondo playoff role. If Shroder gets S&T’d, it needs replacent.
Had he come off the bench for the Lakers as another scoring option when LJ sat, it might have made sense but he didn’t want to do that and Lakers didn’t make him..so yeah bad fit as a starter. He’s a PG who can’t distribute well, too many bad passes and not enough good ones. Also very streaky 3pt shooter which they already had in KCP…His D is ok and he can drive but 2 out of 4 skills shouldn’t cost 20mil +
He is on record as saying he prefers to stay with the Lakers. He just wants more money. The guy heavily overvalues himself. He really did the Lakers a favor by turning down that ridiculous offer.
Wolves do not have assets to acquire John Collins or Ben Simmons
No way they can find a third team
Wolves decided to keep big 3
76ers and Rockets can help but …
No team wants to help out another team unless they get more in return.
I don’t pretend to understand the salary cap and all the ways a team can manipulate it. But how is it possible for the Nets to add Tucker with their current payroll and the Bucks can’t? Honestly, just asking.
I don’t understand it all either, but I would guess that for Tucker and the Nets it would have to be either a sign and trade matching salaries back and forth or Tucker would sign there at less money, perhaps the veterans exception stuff available.
One thing I’m not sure about with the sign and trade is does either team have to be under the salary cap to partake in a sign-and-trade? So that means it’s not available to the Nets? I remember the Warriors sign and trade Kevin Durant and D’Angelo Russell, the Warriors had to get rid of several guys to get under the cap.
I believe the article mentioned the main reason Brooklyn didn’t trade Dinwiddie was to do a sign and trade, his bird rights should allow either team to go over that cap to resignc but at that point it’s up to Milwaukee who they prefer. A Dinwiddie/Jrue/Middleton/Giannis four with Brook/Portis is pretty good
Nah. Tucker was pretty much MVP for shutting down Durant. I’d pay him $15m/ year easy
How did Tucker shut down KD?
As far as I saw KD destroyed MIL havin’ had one of the best playoff series like ever… problem was BRK team was injured, that is why MIL won, 100% sure Tucker meant nothin’ in that series, just as he never does anything at all, guy is just pretty useless if you ask me!
Well I was being hyperbolic. I watched the bucks defensive matchups against Durant. Tucker did the best I’ve ever seen on Durant. Like i said, he played $15m/year quality defense.
You clearly don’t pay attention
Over-the-cap teams can do sign-and-trades, but once a team acquires someone via sign-and-trade, that team can’t surpass the tax apron for the rest of the league year. The tax apron becomes a hard cap (that’s why Golden State had to cut salary to make the Russell sign-and-trade work).
In other words, the Nets probably aren’t going to be able to acquire anyone via sign-and-trade this year, including Tucker (he’d have to be willing to join them for the taxpayer MLE). They could, however, sign-and-trade Dinwiddie for a player who is already under contract.
The Bucks could pay him more than the Nets — it’s more a question of how deep into the tax they’re willing to go.
I don’t believe Shroeder’s decision was only based on money. You don’t get to showcase your playmaking skills when you play with Bron. Mf wants to run every play, take the last shot, get his stats and that leaves a little room for other guards to shine.
He pushed the Lakers to trade BI and Lonzo cuz he wanted total control of the team’s offense. I don’t see the Lakers winning another ship unless he retires. He wiped off the Lakers cap space and will force the them to draft his son watch!
Not wrong at all. Lebrons signs for max and leaves lakers with zero flexibility to do anything else. If he was really a team player he would take less to build a team a la tom brady. God knows lebron makes hundreds of millions in endorsements and side projects. Look up greed and you’d see lebrons picture. Unless rob has some epic move I don’t see how lakers get better.
Similar situation, I hope the Warrior’s big 3 are willing to take Tim Duncan/Dirk Nowitzki type discounts when their current deals come up so they can keep bringing players they want without being hamstrung by the cap as much.
No, LJ wanted ADavis, which took sacrifice. Did not want PGeorge or youngsters.
Tatsu, nobody does that, especially a union leader
My Hawks should do everything possible to move Brickdan Brickdanovic and keep Collins. Having a strong frontcourt was a major key in our successful season. They shouldn’t bring back Lou and Dunn. The sky is the limit if we can sign a guy like Devonte and bring back Collins.
Dunn has a player option he will likely accept so not their choice
But if the Hawks engage in any trades I’m sure that 5 mill expiring is probably included
Devonte Graham is hardly an upgrade over Bogdan, I wouldn’t say the sky’s the limit if you signed him.
The problem with the prediction of a S&T fest this off season is that the same contenders that don’t have cap space, don’t have much in the way of traditional trade assets either. You need to give the prior team something (picks or young cheap players), if only to compensate them for the larger salaries you’re asking them to absorb (which are unlikely to be good contracts). Another problem could be, at least in some cases, the Hard Cap that gets imposed on teams acquiring the S&T’d player.
I think they get used more than usual but agree the contacts coming in aren’t particularly going to come as bargain based in many scenarios and in many cases downright bad
BUT it Just feels like a lot of pressure to shuffle based upon-
A-Leagues wide open Now
B- Free agency, especially for the 22~25 teams cap strapped is going to be a snooze fest
C- Heads seem to roll these days by standing pat in the NBA for better or worse. These guys like their cozy jobs. Activity leads to some semblance of thought towards being hard working or “trying” even tho the results may render negative … And in a lot of cases the guy who didnt work out becomes the fall guy like a Steven Adams; not the GM and they live another day
I want Schroder as far from NY as possible. I’d consider signing Ball before Dennis. Ball is probably staying put. NO matching any offer for him unless it’s a poison pill contract like Jeremy Lin got.
D- add to Cap’s list- GMs like who they already went to the trouble to acquire; their guys just need more time; moving a previous acquisition makes the previous idea look dumb.
mlbnyyfan- Lonzo was inherited by the GM… I doubt Griffin goes to the max. But he is better for a team with Zion on it.
I thought Dinwiddie already opted out. So how can they sign and trade him. He’s a FA now.
Schroeder is only worth it to Lakers. Cause without him. They don’t really have many options. He’s not worth 20 mill to me. Stay in LA.
Best move Hawks can make is a sign n trade for Collins. Okongwu is ready, bigger and a better fit. They lose nothing in this. Only gain and make team better. I would use him to get a big name. CJ is a nice fit here. Makes sense for both teams.
Can you do a 3 team sign and trade? Danny, Lowry, and another team?
Wheres the bozo that spent an entire thread talking about “nba sign and trades are rare” a week ago? I wanna hear him tell me I’m as dumb as league executives…

You mean the main writer for this site?
To be fair, my timing on that article was not great, as sign-and-trades spiked in 2019 and there were a few in 2020 too.
But they’re still rarer than people think. Last year, for instance, 3 of the 7 total sign-and-trades were agreed upon AFTER the player had already committed to sign elsewhere, so that his old team could get a trade exception. And 3 others were for minimum-salary guys (for matching purposes) in the Pelicans/Thunder Steven Adams trade. The Christian Wood S&T was arguably the only “real” one, and even that one was folded into a trade the Pistons and Rockets had already agreed to.
We’ll get some again this year because so many teams are over the cap, but I’m skeptical that there will be as many involving higher-profile free agents as the Fischer article suggests.
Lol no, not him…I had to go back and look. Some dude named Otogar went on a rant in one of the threads.
