Bucks rotation players Bobby Portis ($3.8MM) and Bryn Forbes ($2.4MM) both have player options for the 2021/22 season, but are expected to turn down them in search of new contracts, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype said on his latest podcast with Yossi Gozlan. Since Milwaukee only has Non-Bird rights on both Portis and Forbes, it’ll be a challenge to bring them back, Gozlan notes.
Scotto and Gozlan discussed a handful of other free agency situations on the HoopsHype Podcast, examining the likelihood of P.J. Tucker returning to the Bucks, exploring whether Kyle Lowry is a realistic target for the Pelicans, and suggesting that the Hornets may be in the market for multiple centers – rather than just one – on the free agent market.
Here are a few more items related to the NBA’s upcoming free agent period:
- In an Insider-only story for ESPN.com, Bobby Marks takes a closer look at which teams will realistically have cap room this offseason, which will be limited to the mid-level exception, and which will only have the taxpayer mid-level available. As Marks observes, in order for teams like the Heat, Mavericks, Thunder, Bulls, and Pelicans to gain meaningful cap space, they’ll have to renounce important free agents and/or trade exceptions.
- There’s a significant gap between John Collins and the rest of this year’s free agent power forwards, including Lauri Markkanen and Paul Millsap, John Hollinger of The Athletic writes in his breakdown of the position’s free agent class.
- Hollinger also uses his model to evaluate 2021’s free agent centers, identifying Richaun Holmes, Jarrett Allen, Andre Drummond, Kelly Olynyk, and Daniel Theis as players whose projected value exceeds the mid-level.
- A series of team beat writers for The Athletic considers whether their respective clubs are logical Spencer Dinwiddie suitors this summer. The Raptors, Celtics, and Pistons are among the long shots, while the Clippers, Knicks, and Mavericks are a few teams The Athletic’s writers think might make more sense.
I dont think that gap between Collins and Mark is that significant
Actually think Mark would be a way better fit Hawks then Collins
John is a better basketball player than Lauri in literally every way except Lauri’s probably a lil taller. This has been pretty obvious to see over the 1st 4yrs of their careers
Really….. you need glasses lol
Need to stop vaping so early in the morning
I’m not much of a Collins fan and don’t think he’s worth the max at all. But having watched the hawks a lot during the post season he is a key part of their team. His ability to play the 4/5 spot and change between the two seamlessly was key. He was always handy to knocking down threes, getting inside on small 4s and gets points in the paint, and also get his share of rebounds.
Like the idea of Dinwiddie on the Celtics, not sure now it happens tho, it’ll depend on what offers he gets.
Maybe the Nets would take a sign and trade with Thompson?
Hornets should go get either Drummond or Whiteside. Stat sheet stuffers at the 5 spot. Get ready for some 20 rebound games from these guys. Then get a shooting 5 as a back up like Okynyk or possibly even use the draft to get Luka Garza
Olynyk is expected to re-sign with Houston.
No way Imo, get someone who can run the PnR w Ball
Sengun at 11 is intriguing from the draft, Kai Jones as well tho he will need more time
FA wise I semi like Holmes for Cha but don’t think the contract will be kind long term so I prolly pass – He’s basically a better Zeller w more melatonin
I like pick 11 ultimately for the C of the future…they could possibly even trade down to 19 w knicks and still land a Kai Jones + future assets as well. Cha doesnt need to go for it all in 22 imo
Id be shocked if Drummond got the full MLE even this year
I’d take Whiteside or Drummond cause they will be cheap and very effective getting rebounds. Drummond would also be a great scorer and could be used in PNR. Whiteside would obviously be the cheaper but elite shot blocker.
As for the draft, I’d really like Jalen Johnson for the Hornets if he’s available. He could be a great fit with Ball and his potential is sky high. If they opt to trade back I think Kai Jones or Isiah Todd could be fits as stretch 5’s with potential or otherwise another guard for long term fit next to Ball in the backcourt, like Mitchell, Mann, Dosunmu or Butler would be fine too
I think it is pretty important for the Mavs to get Dinwiddie even if they keep Hardaway. It’s a matter of getting organized and players not aggravating each other. Dins can be more accurate than in the recent past if he is expected to be more selective… he wasn’t in his last healthy year.
Running back the same thing, even with a different coach, is risky, and Kidd can dysfunction.
Dins with Udoka or Nurse could be stressful, and the Pistons don’t need a PG. Clips & Knicks could work.
tAthletic writers thought that the Celtics could do an S&T with Smart; That the DAL FO was hoping for more than Dins with their FA money, being Giannis-dreamers; It complicated with the Clips; It is simpler with the Knicks, but the NY teams have not traded since 1983! They were like, Plan C or D, but not Plan A.
Rose may have held a spot for Chris Paul but probably in vain. Dins would fill PG well. He prefers to switch & can… Not sure if that is Thibs’ plan.
People keep saying, 2nd ACL, but the first did not slow him down, at least later.
I’m a Dinwiddie guy. But I wouldn’t give him more than 2-3 yr option 20 mill a yr. You don’t need a sign and trade for that. Only way a SnT works for Nets is if you are signing max contract. That no one is giving him this yr. He turned down his option so is a FA. I believe that’s how it works. I know he’s been talking he wants a max. That doesn’t sit well with me. And he’s not getting maxed this yr.
I still see Dinwiddie as best PG on FA market. He can help a few teams. No way he’s staying in Bklyn.
Even though Portis played decent in the finals i am still not overpaying him. He was literally a KD having a size 16 shoe away from optin for next season.
