Joe Prunty and Jamelle McMillan are expected to become part of Nate McMillan‘s revamped coaching staff with the Hawks, league sources tell Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report (Twitter link).
Prunty, who began working as an NBA assistant in 1996, has spent time with a total of seven different teams and briefly served as the interim head coach of the Bucks during the 2017/18 season. Prunty, who last coached in the NBA in 2018/19 as a Suns assistant, was the head coach of the Team USA squad that played in the AmeriCup qualifiers earlier this year. He and Nate McMillan worked together in Portland from 2008-10.
Jamelle McMillan, who is Nate’s son, has spent most of his career with the Pelicans, including several years as an assistant under Alvin Gentry. He joined the Suns for a season in 2018/19 before rejoining the Pelicans, but was let go in 2020 when Stan Van Gundy was hired by New Orleans.
Here’s more on the Hawks:
- After previously sharing a lengthy list of prospects who have worked out for the Hawks (or will do so soon), Chris Kirschner of The Athletic continues to add to that list. According to Kirschner (Twitter links), Atlanta is also auditioning Derrick Alston Jr., McKinley Wright IV, Chaundee Brown, Matt Coleman III, Nojel Eastern, Joshua Primo, Ibi Watson, Quade Green, Olivier Sarr, Feron Hunt, and Vrenz Bleijenbergh prior to the draft.
- Kirschner teamed up with John Hollinger of The Athletic to preview the Hawks’ offseason, digging into how much a contract for John Collins and an extension for Kevin Huerter might cost the team. Collins’ situation will be much trickier than Huerter’s, according to Hollinger, who wonders if Atlanta can avoid a max deal for a Collins and re-sign him to something in the $100-110MM range.
- In the second half of their Hawks offseason primer, Kirschner and Hollinger consider possible targets for Atlanta on the trade market and in the draft. Hollinger points to Miles McBride and Trey Murphy as two prospects who might be fits for the club with the No. 20 pick.
Collins presents an interesting situation for ATL. I don’t think another team offers him a max but could come close. BOS got j brown for 4/115 a few years ago so doubt Collins gets that.
My guess is Collins resigns for like 4/105 like they suggest. Think ATL somewhat has to pay him bc they already have a lot of money tied up in Gallo, Bogdan, Capela plus a looming max for Trae. It’ll be hard to upgrade the team via FA. They could just hope for better health/progression from Hunter, Reddish, Okongwu but it’s risky. Maybe use as trade bait? Gonna be interesting to see what they do.
In my opinion
Collins is getting max or close to it
He isn’t worth $100 million according to my performance metric
Market is the key word for contracts
I feel like better health from Dre & Cam along with continued development from all of Dre/Cam/Trae/Okongwu/Kev is almost guaranteed. Cam is basically back to 100% health wise already & is even playing in summer league next month. Dre will be healthy by training camp. All 5 of our youngsters improved immensely over the past 365 days & with the valuable postseason experience they all just got it should def be expected for those guys to continue improving. Cam & O are still just pups & Trae, Kev & Dre are all just about to start their primes. Gallo is currently our highest paid player but his contract is only guaranteed for 1 more season. He’ll be gone by the time Trae’s max extension kicks in
I’d rather Isaiah Todd or Isaiah Jackson over Trey Murphy but I would LOVE Miles McBride at 20, especially if he’s showing that he can consistently knock down the NBA trey off the catch in these workouts. Tbh there’s a few pg prospects I wouldn’t mind seeing the Hawks draft at 20, Sharife Cooper & Jared Butler (if healthy) being 2 others. But my ideal draft for the Hawks would be us grabbing Charles Bassey at 20 & Matthew Hurt at 48… as far as John, he has made it clear that he wants to be in ATL & obv we want & need him badly as well. $27M/yr for 4yrs is a great deal for both sides & prob close to what he ends up signing for… If Kev Huerter is willing to sign an extension for like $50M/4yrs I would lock him up, otherwise I don’t mind letting him hit restricted free agency next summer..
I actually agree with Sillivan, that he will get a bigger number.
Collins should get a smarts bonus as well as a solid stat-filler base, plus an approval from a successful and unselfish playoffs.
Ironically, he should be able to shoot more 3s with Pop/Spurs, who have the money.
If the Spurs are willing to give up Dejounte, their upcoming lottery pick plus a future 1st the Hawks might be willing to talk s&t. Otherwise we’d just match & keep John
1) Spurs don’t technically need your s&t.
2) Even if they did, your ask is far too much. At the very least, take away the future 1st
3) I agree, Atlanta likely matches.
Who is this @chound person & why are they afraid to let people reply to their horrible takes? Smh he made 3 points but 2 of the 3 directly contradict each other lol. If u agree that ATL would match SA’s offer then ur admitting that SA technically does need a s&t if they actually want John Collins to be on their team… and no lol I definitely won’t be taking the future 1st away lol if my ask is far too much then SA can decline & the Hawks will just keep John
I didnt contradict myself at all. You listed three points and I explained the stupid of them away. Try to be less wrong kiddo.
Agree with Chound…Murray plus two 1sts is too much
Lol oh u agree with chound do u? How many usernames do u have?.. as I’ve said twice now, SA can either give up Dejounte & the 2 1sts for John or Atl can keep John, either option is great for the Hawks
I’m looking forward to observing what the Hawks do. They have succeeded in getting a lot of young talent and now enter phase 2: the winnowing process of who to keep and who to trade. Like most people I think they overachieved in terms of how far they went in the playoffs so it is not as easy as just running it all back out there and hope that player growth/experience increases enough to make them elite threats to win it all.
Lol… “Like most people” you obv haven’t watched the Hawks much. Just bc you & others are slow to realize how good this team is doesn’t mean they overachieved. The Hawks are very clearly already threats to win it all. The continued improvement of our young guys (Dre, John, Trae, Cam, Kev & O) plus adding our upcoming 1st rd pick, plus the fact that we’ll have around $20M in cap space, plus having Nate for a full season, plus finally having everyone healthy all point to a squad that will be much improved even from the team that had stolen homecourt advantage & was winning late in gm3 when Trae was hurt by the ref. Hawks have no need to trade any of our youngsters at all & will only do so for other young, elite talent (such as Ben Simmons or Zion Williamson).
You have some cap space but some of those guys are due for big pay raises. Once you factor in the RFAs the Hawks actually don’t have much wiggle room.
what guys are due for big pay raises? Only John as far as guys that are currently free agents. Trae & Kev’s pay raises kick in next summer. Our RFA’s this summer are John, Nathan Knight & Skylar Mays. All 3 can have their new contracts added AFTER we use the $20M in cap space that we currently have. Years from now it might eventually become an issue if we use that cap space on a long term contract but we’re good for the next couple seasons no matter what.
I’ve said it enough and long before the playoffs. Drafting Okongwu was to be able to move Collins. They won’t lose anything by letting Okongwu start. And can get a major talent to help Tre. There’s no need to pay Collins.
Knicks looking at same two players McBride, Murphy. I like Murphy has high upside at next level. East will be tougher next yr. Hawks will have to be better. Don’t see Knicks doing as well either unless they upgrade. Celtics, Heat, Pacers, even Hornets will be better.
I gotta wonder if you truly believe this garbage about starting Onyeka at 4 alongside Clint Capela lol… have you ever seen Onyeka Okongwu play basketball? If you have then you would know that he’s not a 4 & would be ineffective playing alongside Capela. They’re extremely similar guys. Neither can handle the ball nearly as well as John, neither can shoot or score nearly as well as John, neither is half as good as John as a post scorer. Clint & O are both prototypical 5s in 2021 nba. O played the 5 in hs, in college & all yr this yr as a rookie in the NBA. I promise you make yourself look ridiculous by saying O could take John’s place as our starting 4. Thats like asking Kris Dunn to be our starting 4 lol… as far as the East being tougher next season aye the East better get tougher next season bc the Hawks are definitely gonna be much better. Casuals don’t understand at all that the Hawks were extremely hobbled by injuries throughout the entire season thru the playoffs. Injuries were a big factor for every team but few if any teams had to endure as many missed games by key players (literally every guy) like Atl. Dre & Cam are not gonna miss basically the entire season next yr like they did this season. And please know that Dre & Cam are both gonna continue to improve by leaps & bounds. Same goes for Trae, O, John & Kev. If you don’t see the Hawks as a serious threat in the East for yrs to come then you’re watching the game wrong lol time to switch something up.. indy will definitely be improved with Warren coming back & Carlisle coming in, Boston just got a new inexperienced coach & traded their 3rd best player & has yet to replace him so I’m not sure they get better, Charlotte will definitely improve with a healthy Hayward & Mia has a lot of work to do in free agency just to maintain their current spot. None of those teams has the talent & depth & a roster as well constructed as Atl has, not even close tbh
If the Hawks max or even come close to maxing Collins they will regret it for the duration of his contract! John is an excellent role man, lob threat, mid range catch and shoot, and 3 point catch and shoot. However he does not create his own shot and doesn’t defend at a high level. That’s not a player you Max.
I’ve been on a couple of sites and fans are giving JC imaginary skills, he does not posses. The post game he had @ Wake Forrest, has been non-existent in the NBA. Hes not a dribble drive player, nor is he a player that creates for others. He is a talent worth keeping at 90 Mil, but he’s already turned that down.
I truly believe he would have been traded at the deadline if the Hawks didn’t go on that streak and the promise wasn’t made to Trae Young if making the playoffs.
I’d S&T him, Replacements? Yes Zion is number one and while he has the star power to force his way out, I don’t think it’s in his personality to do so. So that being said N.O. Would not even consider trade.I’ve said before Bagley is a guy with similar skill set, with added ball handling, creation, and lateral quickness. However despite the talent, he’s far less productive and would be booed by many Hawks. KP has a better skill set, but is also soft as tissue.
