The Kings are among the “known suitors” who would like to get Ben Simmons from the Sixers, but they aren’t likely to part with De’Aaron Fox, sources tell Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee.
Numerous reports have stated that Philadelphia is putting a high asking price on Simmons and is hoping to get an All-Star player in return. Fox hasn’t been an All-Star yet, but he has been extremely productive in his first four NBA seasons and is part of the young foundation in Sacramento. He averaged 25.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 58 games this year while shooting 47.7% from the field and 32.2% from three-point range. He’s also under contract for the next five years.
Anderson states that the Kings are more likely to offer a package that includes shooting guard Buddy Hield, power forward Marvin Bagley III, and multiple future first-round picks. A league source told Anderson that Sacramento would have to give up at least three first-rounders to make the deal work, while another source said the Sixers wouldn’t have any interest unless Fox or rookie guard Tyrese Haliburton is part of the offer.
Hield would fill a need for the Sixers, who ranked 23rd in the league in made three-pointers this season, Anderson notes. He’s a career 40.6% shooter from beyond the arc and holds the league record for most three-pointers made in his first five seasons.
Bagley is a talented young player who so far is best known for being selected ahead of Luka Doncic and Trae Young in the 2018 draft. He has missed a combined 108 games due to injury in first three NBA seasons and has been part of public disputes with the Kings about playing time and his future with the organization.
Unless they are willing to part with Fox or Haliburton as the headliner then they shouldn’t waste Philly’s time.
Next…
Simmons is not worth Fox as the headliner.
If I am the Kings, I might be willing to offer Haliburton, Hield and the #9 this year, but no future firsts. A Fox/Simmons pairing is better than what the Kings have now, but it’s not really a title contender. Simmons is not worth mortgaging the entire future for a team that is not a title contender with him.
I like your deal of Haliburton, Hield and the 9th for Simmons. I think both teams benefit from a deal like that. For the Kings, it’s adds another star name if they pursue a FA, and Simmons on D would be great, along with Fox. Sixers on the other end get the shooter they need, the potential star PG they need, and adding a top 10 pick to the mix.
Fox is BETTER than Simmons
Fox is worse at defense than Simmons is at offense (other than the playoffs). Simmons is better at defense than Fox is at offense, unless you are prepared to argue that Fox is a top 5 offensive player in the league.
Agreed – Halliburton, Hield, Harris, and Curry around Embiid has the potential to be lethal offensively.
They would instantly have terrible defense though. Ben Simmons is alot better than people are acting, if they move him for better O they are going to be just as bad off due to worse D. It’s going to take a special trade for trading him to really make sense. I’m not saying they won’t do it, they probably will, but I doubt they are a better team unless they get really lucky or add something for a true upgrade.
I don’t completely discount defense, but I do realize that offense is more important. My reasoning is simple. No matter how low you keep your opponent’s score, you still have to score more than them to win. A win of 150-145 is much better than a loss of 80-78.
Say what?— A win is better than a loss?
Sorry, with so many teams tanking in the NBA, I figured it needed to be said. I don’t think it is as obvious as it should be.
Weird??? I could have sworn Philly had a pretty good record…they may have even made the playoffs… it’s been a while so I may have misremembered…
Haliburton will probably be a asset on defense next season. He was about average this year, which is really good for a rookie who defends point guards. But he’s not nearly as good as Simmons, obviously. The question is does having an elite shooter like Hield, plus Haliburton’s offense, improve the offense enough to offset that. Maybe. It’s not crazy. The pipe dream is Lillard, and that’s an even bigger defensive hit, but clearly worth a shot if they can make a Simmons and Maxey for Lillard trade.
There isn’t going to be a lot of teams willing to give up what the Sixers want for Simmons so they will have to take what they can get. His value is only going to fall even more if they hold onto him until the regular season resumes in October and their situation becomes more volatile.
I wonder if they are just trying to motivate Simmons at this point. They would be selling low at this point, so why are they acting like he is worth any team’s best player?
Because a ton of front office people are saying that many, many teams still value him highly. Obviously, he’s not going straight up for somebody like Lillard, but he’s probably better than Fox assuming the playoffs didn’t totally break him.
Simmons isn’t a better player as Fox and that’s a big ole fact Philly fans need to grasp. No team in the nba wants to pay $33 mil per for a defensive first player. They are shopping in the damaged and dinged isle hoping they can “fix” him. No one is paying a premium for someone in need of fixing? You can help a player mature and you can help a player improve defensively. If Simmons hasn’t committed himself thus far in his career then that speaks to his character.
4 years of experience each, and Simmons has 13 VORP and Fox is at 4 VORP. eye test id take fox because he fills the stat sheet better, but Simmons is going to get your team more wins.
VORP is, at best, an inaccurate stat that unilaterally favors big men over small men.
VORP SCHMORP. Go back to playing NBA2k.
Most advanced stats do. But who wants to compare guards to centers anyway.
Knicksfan- Any team that can afford Simmons would have him. That’s why it’s a story when a team does Not want him instead of their #1 player.
He’s not only a defense guy. He still shoots 60% for the field when he does shoot (bunnies). Any half way decent team with Simmons is a playoff team because his oof rating and d rating are so high.
Brian214 why would any team part with a star and picks for Simmons? He is so over valued it is ridiculous.
Well i guess Philly is sitting Ben Simmons in the 4th quarter for the future…
See if you say X or Nothing, you usually get nothing.
And Simmons is worth more than Hield, MBIII and picks. Its not that hard to understand what he is saying.
Simple matter is outside of Fox or Hailburton, the Kings don’t have a viable piece.
Haliburton & Hield + 3 picks (and maybe Bagley) seems like the minimum offer that would have a chance at being the best offer. I could see the Sixers sending Shake back in a deal like that.
Seems like the offer someone would make if they are smoking a lot of weed for breakfast. Simmons is not remotely worth mortgaging your future for.
Probably not, which is why sac doesn’t have the assets to make a deal.
If I’m sixers I’d take picks from kings. Simmons on a dumpster fire like kings your guaranteed 3 top 5 picks plus hield and bagley (has potential just injuried)
Hield, salary match, and a bunch of picks work. Kings picks would be lottery picks for sure.
This is where the joke would be on you. The kings are super good at being the 9th or 10th place team in the conference. They always get their picks outside of the top 10 outside of a couple rare circumstances.
Hield can be traded straight up for Simmons, salary-wise.
And should be, but Philly is dreaming right now.
I’m still a Ben guy. I believe he can get his FT% over 75%. And that’s what he needs to do most. Ben has to play the 3-4. With Fox he probably does. That’s the best place for him. He’s unguardable there.
Gotta say if I’m Sixers. I would take ———
Halliburton, Hield, Bagley, and a #1. I still like Bagley. With Embiid there he will get plenty easy looks. Halliburton is kind of PG they’ve needed since they got Embiid. He’s perfect for Sixers and plays D too. I do that.
Imagine trading haliburton for Simmons lol
if the Sixers want fox they need to throw in some first rounders and take buddy too. Fox >Simmons
Why don’t people think defense counts. Fox is a poor defenders, as bad as Simmons (regular season edition) is on offense. Those are their weaknesses compared.
Now look at their strengths. Simmons is a top five defensive player. Fox probably isn’t even close to a top 5 offensive player.
You all can value Simmons however you want, but the plethora of quotes from real NBA decision makers shows you’re undervaluing him.
I can see Fox being off the table. No qualitative analysis is needed. He’s the foundation of their current rebuild.
But they shouldn’t keep Haliburton off the table. Realistically, nobody else on their roster has enough trade value (and Hield and MB3 have next to none), and their 1st rounders, while nice, likely can’t be the only significant asset transferred. Plus, if I were them, I wouldn’t want to send out more than a single remote 1st rounder. Their history on draft position suggests it might not be a wise move.
If no Fox or Haliburton involved don’t bother. Hield Bagley and picks does nothing. Bagley is a bust. Hield is a head case and from what it sounds like not a great attitude guy.
The kings may want to build an offer around hield and mbiii, but it has no real value to the Sixers who are in win now mode. Bagley wouldn’t start over Harris so I don’t know how he will get an opportunity to reach his “potential”. Moving Harris to the 3 would be a bad choice as history has shown. Hield is basically the same player as curry, great shooter and a sieve on defense. Don’t see how either player moves the needle. Future firsts would be needed, but again, the Sixers are in win now mode so I don’t know how much interest they have in future 1sts. I think if fox is off the table, then the trade has to include Halliburton. The Sixers are light on options to improve the PG position, so they would need to acquire one in this deal
Wouldn’t trade him straight up
Simmons is fascinating
He’s like crypto currency, some think it’s the future ,some think its completely worthless
I think the dude needs to be a 4 tbh , hell Id even run him at the 5 Magic 32 Man style in some lineups to throw the other team some crazy looks.
Don’t watch a ton of Philly but Id guess they have maybe been tooo traditional with a VERY non traditional player maybe?? Whoever brings him in, if they do, Id love too see a NEW approach w him ….just thinking he’s gonna learn to shoot isn’t enough for me to pull the trigger, there needs to be a plan and a really good fit (surrounded by shooters!!)
Simmons’s offense was fine during the regular season. He was aggressive offensively in quite a lot of games, though not enough. He shot 61% on free throws, which is tolerable.
But then he had one of the biggest choke jobs in history in the post season. That’s how we got here.
It seems that the consensus on this board is Simmons needs to play the 4/5 but I’m not sure I agree. Simmons hasn’t shown any ability to be a great post defender – his success as a defender has come almost exclusively against perimeter players.
Whereas, offensively, his only success has been what you referenced – being surrounded by shooters. I still think to maximize Simmons you have to view him as closer to Magic than Draymond. He’s shown Magic’s skills offensively. He hasn’t shown Draymond’s post defense to date.
Multiple first round picks should not even be included in deal. They going to mortgage their future for a dude who’s afraid of shooting. And stop mentioning the 40 points he dropped against the Jazz cuz that was once in lifetime so shut yo dumb ass and start watching entire games instead of being a meat rider!
Simmons has shown he can score enough when he’s aggressive enough. The problem has been getting him to play that way. It’s not a skills thing.
Simmons needs to get off his A$$ and practice 1000 jumpers everyday. Look at what time and dedication did for Randle this year on the Knicks.
Dude practice don’t mean squat. You can’t practice away a blockage between the ears. He needs a mental health professional. Maybe before the game take a Valium so he can stop over thinking.
Yes, he’d also be better if he could shoot better. I’m just saying that if he were just his most aggressive self all the time, he’d be more than good enough and we wouldn’t even be having this conversation about trading him.
Honestly, of the teams that have been rumored so far for Simmons (CLE, MINN, SAC, IND) I think the Cavs have the best offer to make if they can add the salary around Sexton to make it work.
Second would be Sacramento if they throw Halliburton on the table w/ Hield.
For Minnesota and Indiana, I just don’t think deals centered around Russell or Brogdon are enough.
I think Philly needs to get back a perimeter guy who can take over the game down the stretch, creating shots. To me that’s the perfect role for Sexton. And playing w/ Embiid will help gloss over the warts on his game.
I’m not taking Sexton and Kevin Love.
It would have to be something like Sexton, Nance, Prince and probably unprotected swaps.
Two injured or oft injured players and future assets. Still not the best package out there imo. But it fills holes in the bench and provides scoring/playmaking for the first unit.
Sexton – Maxey
Curry – Shake – Korkmaz
Thybulle – Prince
Harris – Bball Paul
Embiid – Nance
Don’t think that lineup is a lock to out of the East, but it at least goes to the ECF if healthy.
I think that’s fair. Nance would be a nice bonus. Think that roster is a contender if Sexton can round out his game a little.
Love makes no sense on Philly, so if he’s involved it’ll have to be a 3-team, IMO.
Fox and haliburton ain’t going anywhere so kings shouldn’t even talk unless philly willing to take the others
