The Knicks have picked up their option for next season on center Mitchell Robinson and have waived center Norvel Pelle, the team announced (via Twitter).
Robinson will make $1.8MM in the final season of the four-year deal he signed after being drafted in the second round in 2018. He was the team’s starting center before getting injured, so it was an easy decision for New York to exercise the option.
The 23-year-old averaged 8.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in 31 games before undergoing season-ending foot surgery in late March. He also suffered a broken hand during the season that caused him to miss 15 games.
Robinson is eligible for a four-year, $51MM extension during the offseason, tweets Bobby Marks of ESPN. The Knicks also have the option of using cap space to renegotiate his salary for next season and having that be the beginning of an extension. If no extension is reached, Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Pelle, 28, had a $1.7MM option for 2021/22 that New York chose not to exercise. He signed a pair of 10-day deals with the Knicks in April, shortly after Robinson broke his foot, and earned a contract through the end of the season. Pelle appeared in nine games, averaging 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds in 5.8 minutes per night.
Randle: 2021-22 is partially guaranteed for $4M.
Mitchell: 2 million salary
Knicks have only rookies contracts. They can easily create $100 million cap room to sign 3 superstars next Monday.
Where are they going to find superstars to sign on Monday?
What I mean is
Knicks are always waiting for the diamonds falling down from the sky
Only you look to the sky. Homer
Funny how your writing has improved lol
Knicks spent total of $82 million salary for 15 players in 2020-21 season.
Knicks are trying to use blank check to win championships.
What a huge city!
Top 5 hottest commodity, Knicks should offer
1. Lowry 3 year $80M
2. Ball 4 year $90M
3. Duncan Robinson 4 years $80M
4. Powell
5. Fournier
Trade them on trade deadline again
Paul, Conley, Reggie Jackson, Collins and Allen will stay.
Earlier you post they can sign 3 superstars but none of these dudes are superstars. Hell outside of Lowry these guys are just high end role players
Literally thought the same thing plus 20 mil for d Rob is a joke not even J&J reddick could get paid like that
sillyman has a crush on D. Robinson. sillyman being sillyman.
You do understand how the cap works right? They would have to trade for similar salaries.. meaning unless somehow they are traded for 1 year deals( highly unlikely) they will not have cap when guys may be avail. Sign one year deals and preserve cap. This isn’t 2k where you can sign guys to trade for picks.
Mitch will get his contract next yr. First he’s gotta play a whole yr. Pelle was alright. He will get picked up. It will be interesting to see who Knicks sign. Their picks were solid for bench help. Only one I didn’t like was #58. They should of took David Duke. It’s looking like a PG and Scorer/Shooter is who they will go after. Only been saying it for over a year.
Pelle has always been intriguing to me because hes legit as a shot blocker but he fouls too much and its kept him from holding a roster spot
Another (predictable) high hanging punt by Rose & Co. It’s the right call on Mitch. Their Plan B strategy in the Draft was probably the best approach too, although I won’t finally conclude that until I see what else they have in store for the off season. Someday soon, they will have to make some moves with long term consequences. I keep saying that, and they keep punting. FWIW, I don’t see more than 1 major long term FA contract this off season.
Just goes to show don’t have a rhyming first and last name in New York. Seems counterintuitive with broadway and stuff. Hamilton anyone? Smdh…
I think the Knicks are after Devonte Graham; the draft-day deals made with CHA are to get them to not match.
