There has been talk that the Knicks are aggressively pursuing a trade with the Cavaliers for high-scoring young guard Collin Sexton. With that in mind, The Athletic’s Kelsey Russo and Mike Vornukov examine what New York might give up for Sexton. The Knicks don’t have available veteran players that the Cavaliers would be interested in, so it’s more likely to be a combination of last year’s lottery selection, Obi Toppin, and a first-round pick.
We have more on the Knicks:
- Luca Vildoza scored nine points in Argentina’s loss to Team USA on Tuesday while guarding some high-level players such as Bradley Beal, Zach LaVine and Damian Lillard. He’s looking forward to doing that on a regular basis, Marc Berman of the New York Post writes. “Today was a test for me against the best players in the world,” he said. “I felt really good against them, but we lost by 30, and I got to get better. I got work to do.’’ Vildoza signed a four-year pact with the Knicks in May.
- The team is interested in re-signing free agent Nerlens Noel but they’ll have plenty of competition, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The Kings and Raptors are expected to make a run at the big man. The Mavericks, Nets and Hornets are also potential suitors for Noel, Ian Begley of SNY.tv tweets. Sacramento’s pursuit of Noel hinges on what happens with one of its own free agents, Richaun Holmes, Scotto adds.

Vildoza is very talented but it might take him a while to adjust to the NBA. I’ll sign Holmes over Noel on any given day.
The Knicks needs an experienced veteran like Lowry or Rose to mentor Luca.
I don’t see the Cavs taking Toppin, they already have 3 decent PFs in Love, Nance and Wade. It’ll be smart if they can include Love in Sexton deal although Colin wouldn’t like to have him as a teammate again.
If I was Colby Altman I would hang up the phone on Leon Rose with that insult of a package!
Don’t see the Knicks wasting their precious cap space away on Love. And NY is certainly not the city for Love to play ball in.
I can see the desire for Noel around the league but it ties to the “cheap C” camp….This attention might lead to him not being so cheap now
I don’t like the Cha fit here, think a guy that can pick and POP is the play for Cha at C …… Turner being best outside option
It would be interesting to see if Noel is willing to consider Dallas. I can think of about 70,000,000 reasons it might be uncomfortable for him.
Noel would be a good addition for Milwaukee. They need someone who can rebound and clog up the paint when Giannis is resting, and take some of the defensive pressure off of him against bigger lineups.
A Brook Lopez type is working!
Sexton would be great for the Knicks as long as they don’t give up too much. I don’t see what anybody sees in Toppin but perhaps I’m missing something. I’d trade him and the later 1st round pick in a heartbeat
The Knicks had no idea that Randle was going to be an All Star and that’s why they took Toppin with hopes of trading Randle before the deadline. It’s obvious Knicks should of taken Halliburton.
If all it cost me was Toppin a 1st and a 2nd I would gladly take a flier on Sexton if I was Rose.
It’s not a lot. But if Cleveland doesn’t want to pony up for him next summer it’s a lot more than nothing.
Derrick Rose is only worth 42nd pick. Knicks rejected the idea of 32nd pick
It’s too naive to believe that Leon Rose will give up Toppin or a first round pick for Sexton
Knicks can easily sign Sexton for absolutely free next summer
First off, he would be an RFA, which means they cannot just sign him without worry. Second, no one gets signed for “absolutely free” at all. Third, the Knicks would not be the only suitor for Sexton next off season, so easily signing him is not a guarantee either. Finally, why would the Knicks want to throw a lot of money at Sexton without really knowing how he fits on the team?
Knicks shouldnt trade for sexton..period…hes fools gold
Agreed.
How so? He shot 47%/37%/81%. I’ts not like he’s a 2021 version of John Wall where he was a volume scorer with low shooting % (20pts on 40/31/79).
No to Sexton
Forget Sexton he’s not a fit here. Can’t believe Thibs a D guy would want a selfish No D player. Luca is more a traditional PG who can shoot. He’s a backup not a future starter. He gives us good depth. Makes Quickley expendable. Knicks aren’t signing Noel. You don’t pay big for a backup center. Knicks gave to pay Mitch this yr. Noel deserves a contract and will get offers. Been saying it for yrs. TWolves should start him next to Towns. He can play the 4 and anchor their D. Makes them instant playoff team. We can sign Howard to backup. Or draft a big in second rd.
Im a Knicks first fan so I hate to go against you but that “selfish” tag is unwarranted. You can’t tell a player to go score and then get mad because he does so. He was basically moved off of the PG position and Garland took over. Sexton still improved from 3 assts pg to 4.4 apg DESPITE moving off PG duties. He shot the ball well. He did his job. Don’t keep repeating bs some anonymous vet says. He has heart. Played great intense defense in college. His team defense needs help but he’s a rookie whos had 4 different coaches in 3 years and Dellavedova as his primary mentor. Whatever happened to trying to coach young players instead of expecting them to be perfect by their 3rd season? His coach Avery Johnson gushed over his heart and tenacity in college. I think he is on the cusp of being a top 10 guard in the league.
His own teammates said it. More than one. Ask yourself why would they trade him and not Garland. It’s obvious they don’t want him. So we take a player Cavs don’t want. And give up assets for him. Come on now. We are not the old Knicks. We will be smart about getting a PG.
No teammate put his name on record. Publicly they all talk of how hard he works. Did you hear the stuff some of Lebron’s teammates said of him his first two seasons? You hear a lot of players showing their egos because they weren’t getting the touches they think they deserve. And Garland isn’t up yet for an extension and hasn’t shown what his worth is yet.
Could careless about personal opinions tho. His 24pts on 47/37/81 speak for themselves. He’s was asked to score and he did so. With Garland he’s not asked to be the pg but he still increased his numbers to 4.4 pg. Defense can be coached.
Cavs are a stupid organization. They drafted this kid 8th overall. Getting a guy who increases his ppg from 17 to 20 to 23 and assists from 3 to 3 to 4.4 while shooting 46/39/83 for his career is usually considered a win.
They gave away Kevin Porter for nothing and by allowing it to seem they are desperate to move him kills his value and probably doesn’t make the kid feel good about staying. At least come out and say “we’re not trying to trade him but we must explore how to get better and we’ll listen to all calls about anyone”. something along those lines. Cleveland has an impossible time attracting FA and their draft history isn’t great. Im disgusted about how they value this kid. his flaws are small and fixable with coaching. every coach and former NBA player that knew him before draft gushed over his character and work ethic. I don’t value anonymous vet teammates held over from LBJ era. Love included.
Sexton would be a good pickup for New York. They really need someone who can just get buckets. They funnel thier offense through Randle so all Sexton would have to so is knock down shots or attack when he gets chased off the line and run the occasional pick and roll to free up Randle. Barrett can cover whichever guard is the bigger threat. I think Quickley’s ceiling is a good 6-7th man. Luca’s already 25 so I’m not sure how much more he’s going to develop. Let Rose walk he’s a semi good feel good story that’s overrated anyway.
Sexton would make a fine replacement for Rose if he leaves because the Knick offense seemed to rely on Rose for variety. Sexton has been durable whereas Rose is risky… It would be embarrassing if the Knicks slump because the backup PG was injured. Sexton could be started and be as fast and dynamic as you want.
His 3 vs 5 game would be a good intro to trade critics.
Thibs likes defense, but like other defensive coaches, he also likes when someone can be relied on to get buckets.
With Robinson on court, Sexton makes a lot of sense.
But if the Cavs draft Mobley & get a twin towers, I would prefer Sexton be retained, to fill the vacuums. Otherwise, more room for Suggs/Green.
Honestly Knox and those 2 1sts probably should be enough.
I don’t see the Sixers doing a Ben Simmons deal. I could see Sixers keeping Ben and trading picks and Shake and George Hill for Sexton to add cost effective offense and push Curry to the 2nd team. But the Knicks offer would be better.
Noel only needs to play 14 more seasons at 5M per to earn that 80M he passed up.
That’s trading a $1 for .25 and some scratch offs. Knox hasn’t been able to secure a starting position on a bad team and those picks aren’t going to be top 10. GM should be fired if he traded Sexton for that. Knox has very little value and is a fixer up at best.
I don’t see them getting a haul for Sexton tbh. Not based on reports. Cavs are talent starved and want to get rid of their best offensive weapon. What’s that say about their view of him. Everyone else is basically trading for the right to match an offer.
Two 1sts is better than what most teams are probably offering.
If other, more respected front offices are willing to trade for him, knowing he “might” (sense they’re were no public demands) want a max contract then what does that tell you? More than likely they see him as a cheap rental or they are willing to pay him.
Do yourself a favor, look at allllllll the guards that scored 20pts and shot at LEAST 45%/35%/80% and see what they’re getting paid. It’s a short list.
Curry, Kyrie, Lillard, Middleton, Beal, Rozier, Levine and Brogdon.
His numbers aside from assists are better than Trae Young who is shorter and with little defensive value. Sexton also turned the ball over less frequently (4.4 vs 2.8).
