The Knicks have been the most aggressive trade suitor for Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton so far, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Sexton, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible for a rookie scale extension this offseason, has been the subject of multiple trade rumors within the last month, with the latest one over the weekend suggesting he’s “very available.”
The Knicks have a surplus of future first-round picks – including the Nos. 19 and 21 selections in this year’s draft – at their disposal and remain in the market for a long-term answer at point guard, though it’s unclear if Sexton is capable of being that answer.
The 6’1″ guard is undoubtedly a talented scorer, having averaged a career-best 24.3 points per game on .475/.371/.815 shooting in 60 games (35.3 MPG) in 2020/21. However, he’s not exactly a traditional point guard — facilitating for teammates isn’t one of his strengths, and Darius Garland has assumed primary point guard duties in Cleveland over the last couple years.
Sexton also isn’t an above-average defender, so he’d probably need to be paired with a backcourt partner capable of handling the tougher assignments.
Still, NBA players capable of efficiently averaging 24+ points per night are rare, so if the price is right (in terms of both the trade return and his next contract), Sexton could be a worthwhile investment for the Knicks or another team.
Seems like a logical fit. I don’t like the player but he is miles above what they had for guards this year.
Over Barrett and Rose? Not sure I’d agree. He drops 24 a game on a bad team, and that’s about it. Even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut.
Why would the Cavs wanna trade him? He’s the best player, can’t they extend him?
He’s about to become expensive and is a one dimensional offensive player. Cleveland is also likely to draft a guard with the third overall pick.
Please describe “one-dimensional “? Is that because he can’t post up?
Why can’t Frank who’s a defensive stopper get a fair shot?……the grass always looks greener across the river for the Knicks…
Not sure your point but offense is always more desirable in NBA free agency. Sexton has 25 pg ability.
Given the opportunity Frank could score
Sexton can only score
Nobody is going to steal Sexton from Knicks next summer. Knicks can offer him 5 years $60m
@KnicksCavsFan
“One dimensional” in that he can score but isn’t a playmaker or a good defensive player. Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs will both be better players – might as well get assets for Sexton now.
He is and they can. They could also do nothing and have him score 24 a night again for 6 million and extend or not next summer.
Because they’re an ignorant organization that can’t get from in front of themselves and are doomed to constantly be in rebuild mode?
They see more value in giving an oft- injured and declining Kevin Love a contract he didn’t deserve for non- basketball reasons and investing a $100 mil in a offensively limited C in Allen than overpay for a productive and efficient scorer who may have more upside to go. I mean clearllllllly Cleveland has the ability to sign ANY FA they want and can easillllly replace him with another 24pt pg shooter.
Because he not a true PG and he isn’t the best defender . I think cavs rather keep Allen than pay him
And they would be stupid. I can EASILLLLLY go out and find a FA to give me 10/10. I can’t EASILLLLLY find a guy who can give me 24pts on 45+/37+/80+ shooting. Period. And those that might be available don’t want to come to Cleveland. Bottom line…how do you give Love 4/$140 but can’t find a way to appease Sexton????
So move him to SG and defense is something that can be coached when you have a willing student. Do some research about his character especially under Coach Avery Johnson
The Love offer was years ago, and based on being a champion. Not a comparison. Besides, signing Love reduces the amount that can be spent on others. It is not a factor in Sexton decisions, which are yet to be made and thus NOT fixed costs.
And he has already been playing SG, where have you been? It says in the article.
There’s no helping height – he’s 6’1” at off-guard and doubt he’ll get any better playing on the other side of the court. Just over 4 assists and 35 minutes per for a ‘PG’ is not the solution. I’d rather see the Knicks sign Ball before trade for Sexton.
They have alot of guards and him and the front office had issues that’s why they wanna trade him. I think they got the 3rd pick in this yrs draft and will pick another guard.
I really dont like this move. Small guard, not a playmaker, and not a huge fit with our core
He’d be a scorer off the bench. Something this team desperately needs.
With Rose (if resigns) and Quickley? i dont think so
Why would he need to come off the bench?
Rose finished 3rd for the 6th man award. Child please…
The Knicks want to go after Dame. What do you think it will cost to bring Dame to New York? Most of your good young core and 3 to 4 first rounders!
Don’t think dame coming I would love it but let’s see that’s why they tryna get Sexton.
Hopefully its another fake report, and he can be given the locker next to Drummond. Although I’m given some pause on that since it isn’t emanating from Berman. Anyway, it’s about as dumb an idea as I can think of. To be sure, the Knicks can’t maintain their defensive identity with a guy like Sexton on the court (he’s too feeble on that end, and doesn’t care). Suggesting it can be mitigated by pairing him with someone to cover for him demonstrates a misunderstanding of how the Knicks play defense under Thibs. Players have different roles. Nobody takes the night off on the defensive end.
Doesn’t care? Dude is cited as being the first in last out of the gym guy. He is just undersized and doesn’t have the defensive IQ to make up for it. Where do people get these narratives of teams they don’t watch?
What makes you think I haven’t watched CLE with Sexton? I also saw him in college. Body language, and looks to and from teammates, say a great deal. When a player is challenged in an area, I look for resolve to overcome it, and with an undersized defender you look for tenacity. Watching CLE’s backcourt, I see capitulation.
More generally, I understand the idiotic refrain of “you must not watch” is commonly used on this message board, as though it somehow bolsters an argument. It doesn’t, the opposite. It suggests a weak argument or at least a weak minded advocate.
Of course you look for players to overcome their deficits, but being too short is sort of hard to overcome. Players can work their entire careers to overcome one flaw and can’t, it doesn’t show the type of player they are. And his body language and lack of showing tenacity? Please, half of the leagues star point guards doesn’t show defensive tenacity. Do you see Kryie, Lillard, Trae, Luka, etc. show consistent tenacity on defense? Do we even talk about their defensive impact. Of course not, but that is not your argument. You said Collin Sexton “doesn’t care” and I am telling you that I have never seen Collin not care. It’s cool that you’ve seen Collin play, but I have seen him play for three straight seasons and I disagree whole heartedly with your statement. He has messed up defensive coverages a lot and is taken advantage of due to his height, but imo giving a player the label of lazy or doesn’t care is worse than saying they don’t have the ability to.
FWIW, I would have made the same statement about at least 2 of the guys you listed relative to their presence on the court being inconsistent with Knicks’ defense, and for the same reasons. It may not be laziness in any of these cases, but frustration at not being good at something and it leading to capitulation. I wouldn’t call Shaq a lazy player in any sense, and he certainly cared about winning from the time he entered the league. But, as a FT shooter, I thought he was feeble (he was) and didn’t care. I think he realized at a point that he was never going to be anything above a below average FT shooter, and that demoralized him into not even being that. Of course, I can only go by his actions and statements, he may have had deeper caring thoughts about his FT shooting that weren’t apparent. I’m somewhat sympathetic. It’s hard to work hard at something you’re challenged at because you’re only going to be so good regardless. It’s where a coaching staff and/or a team identity (or culture as some prefer to say) can come into play, especially for young players. Who, btw, can always bring energy (even if misdirected) on that end of the floor. Anyway, I have no issue with your different take on it, as a Cavs’ fan.
If he cared maybe he’d dish the ball off to his teammates instead of putting up 4 assists in 35 minutes per.
If he’s smart, he plays off as a 6th man and becomes the next Lou Williams.
Saying he doesn’t care showed you know nothing about the dudes character. I think the media runs with anonymous sources way too easy. I can’t see him being the animal he was in highschool and college and suddenly not care. He may not have acclimated to NBA team defense but 3 different coaches in 3 years probably didn’t help either.
I don’t know him personally, and suspect you don’t either. I can only go by what I see (regardless of whether you can’t see it). What I do know is that early in 2019-20 season, when there were still audiences in MSG, me included, I witnessed Sexton giving his teammates the Melo Smirk after what appeared to be a missed defensive assignment. Young guys maybe. But it’s hard to see anyone who gives the Melo Smirk caring enough about his defense.
The fact that you are referencing something from a year and a half ago shows how weak your own argument is. You’re essentially basing your entire opinion of Sexton on outdated information, as if young players cannot grow or change.
Had you actually watched him more recently, you would know he has matured on that end of the floor. Still a poor defender, but his growth there has been real.
Please no. Doesn’t play defense. Not a great ball handler. I’ll give the point that he’s a scorer but that’s about it. He’s one dimensional and the Knicks need better at point guard
The narrative that he doesn’t play defense is wrong. He is very undersized to play the two and doesn’t have the greatest defensive IQ, but he doesn’t “take plays off” as people says he does. In fact all of his teammates say he is the hardest worker on the team. Also, he is a fine ball handler, not sure where you got that from? His 4.2 assists to 2.8 turnovers (11.6% turnover percentage with a 29.7% usage rating, if you know advanced basketball stats you know that is good) is indicative of that. The only reasons he is on the trade block is he is a undersized 2 guard and the Cavs don’t want to pay a max contract to him since we have so many young players including this years draft picks that will need to be payed in 3-4 years. If he was 6’5, these trade talks would not be a conversation.
Can they get RJ Barrett back for him? Seems that deal would help both teams.
I wouldn’t mind lol
Knicks need to give Luca a chance at PG. Now if Cavs want to deal Okoro Knicks should be interested.
He’s a fit bc he can play off ball and allow Randle to still play Point Forward at times
As with all of this stuff: what’s the price? A future first, future second and Toppin? Ok. I’d be willing to take a look at a young borderline star guard who can do what we severely needed a few weeks ago—create a shot whenever he wants. And I’ll cross my fingers Thibs can get the kid to play D.
I’m just not sure I’d give up more than that when I may have to try and match a sizable extension next year on him, having seen him play 0 min in our system.
Tell you what. Let’s get Sexton, Bickerstaff, and GilbertAltman together for a presser, and they can answer all questions.
HAHAHAHHAHAHA
heh heh heh
ahem
