Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley has emerged as the strong frontrunner for the Magic’s head coaching job, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Negotiations are ongoing between the 42-year-old Mosley and Orlando’s brass, but his reputation in developing players, building relationships and holding them accountable has made him the top choice for the rebuilding Magic, Wojnarowski adds.
Orlando had narrowed its list to Mosley and Wes Unseld Jr., who remains a strong candidate to get the Wizards’ head coaching job. Mosley is also a finalist for that job and was expected to meet with Washington for a second interview on Friday.
Mosley spent the past seven years as an assistant under Rick Carlisle. He also spent four years apiece with the Cavaliers and Nuggets prior to joining Dallas’ staff. He’s currently an assistant coach on the U.S. Select team.
Mosley was expected to leave Dallas after being passed over for the team’s head coaching job in favor of Jason Kidd.
Terry Stotts might have to wait fir a while before landing a job.
Magics need to take the necessary time to rebuild and avoid big spendings like the Gordon and Vuc contracts unless they sure is worth it!
Can’t believe Dallas passed Mosley over for Kidd. Amazing.
I thought that was weird also. Especially with him being Luka’s guy.
2-3 years from now when Magic rebuild is looking good a-la Nets before KD and Kyrie came… we’re gonna have lots of Luka to the Magic chatter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it starts sooner.
Does that happen? Do players go to small market teams to play for coaches they like?
Ha no.
Kidd was the best available for a team that does not want to gamble on a new guy. Mosely being a favorite of Doncic could work against team unity, but I’m not sure about he situation there.
What was the Grant Hill and McGrady thing then? I’m just saying the coach helps if they rebuild well and he gets them to over perform. Doncic will stay or go depending on where he thinks he can win
I’m not saying a star player won’t sign with the Magic. First off, just because Doncic said Mosley could be a good coach in the league doesn’t mean Doncic is as close to Mosley as the media is portraying. If Doncic was truly real tight with Mosley and demanded he be HC of the Mavs then Mosley would be HC of the Mavs right now. Mosley didn’t even get an interview. You think Cuban would risk his relationship with his star player by not even interviewing his star player’s favorite coach?
2nd Hill and McGrady didn’t team up for love of a coach. If I can remember correctly McGrady is from Florida (sorta a hometown thing) and the Magic threw tons of money at Hill so it clicked. Small markets getting two star players in free agency doesn’t happen often and I have never heard of a star player choosing a team because of a particular coach.
Hill was a legit max guy and had other max offers. He wanted to be in Orlando with TMac. Duncan wanted to be a part of it too before D-Rob swayed him to stay. Orlando the franchise has been in shambles for a while, but its a reasonably attractive market (nice weather, no income tax, family friendly, lots of entertainment, Disney marketing potential). If this current administration can revitalize the franchise, it would mean a lot to the Magic’s ability to recruit elite talent
Cutino?
Magic gonna magic.
Hopefully, Mosley learned a bit in his time with the Mavs. An AC can undermine a HC and make him look bad, but he will invariably look bad himself. The result was he was never a consideration for the Mavs job. Fittingly, the Mavs job went to Kidd, another guy who hopefully has learned that undermining colleagues isn’t the best strategy to get ahead.
That was the decision that might help keep Luka for the long term, I mean if you pick Mosley over J-Kidd… I am afraid Luka is out of town in the next train… but with J-Kidd in town, I think Luka is gonna be there for the long run.
Also when the guy who got Mosley the job, Carlisle, makes it clear what a back stabber the guy is, well… not the guy you want there setting up the culture, right?
One must hope ORL doesn’t hire him.
