The Mavericks are in advanced talks to hire Sean Sweeney as an assistant coach on Jason Kidd‘s new staff, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein (Twitter link).
Sweeney, who has been on Dwane Casey‘s staff in Detroit since 2018, was said last month to be in talks with the Pistons on a new deal. However, as Stein points out, Sweeney worked on Kidd’s staff during his time in Brooklyn and Milwaukee. Once Kidd was hired by the Mavericks, it seems Sweeney’s focus shifted to a reunion with the veteran coach.
Here’s more from around the Southwest:
- Tim Hardaway Jr. will make the final decision on his destination in free agency this summer, but his father would vote for him to remain in Dallas. As Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News tweets, Tim Hardaway Sr. said on the 1 Star Recruits Podcast that he thinks the Mavericks are “a very good fit for my son” and that the decision to hire Kidd was a good one.
- Appearing on the Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz, former Pelicans head coach Stan Van Gundy spoke more about his exit from the organization, suggesting that he was more focused on what was happening on the court, while executive VP of basketball operations David Griffin was more concerned with “the atmosphere around the team and the happiness of people.” Christian Clark of NOLA.com has the full quote from Van Gundy.
- Evan Barnes of The Memphis Commercial Appeal evaluates whether the Grizzlies could – and should – make a strong play for Bradley Beal should the All-Star guard become available in a trade before his current contract ends.
- Within his latest mailbag, Kelly Iko of The Athletic discusses the No. 2 pick, Eric Gordon‘s trade value, and several more Rockets-related topics.
I don’t know who the Grizzlies would trade besides a haul of first round picks, but a big three of Morant, Beal, and Jackson Jr. would be a contender in the West.
Obviously Morant is untouchable (at least for Beal) but I would think JJJ would have to be involved.
They can land Beal if they include Jackson in trade.. JJ was injured a lot and regressed in my opinion. Jonas has been solid all year long and he’s way more important to the team than Jackson. Jackson, Brooks and 2nd pick for Beal!
I’m sure the Wizards would have to consider long and hard on that one.
Most of the proposed trades made here for Beal would only be enough to get Westbrook.
Any serious trade for Beal would take even more than what the Nets gave up for Harden.
Brooks is a ruff ryder! JJ can be an essential piece of the team if he stays healthy. I think accepting Bertans as part of the trade will seal the deal.
Isn’t that the pt of a coach to worry about Xs and Os and management worries about the org as a whole? Thanks, Stan. Stick to mustaches and modeling.
If the Rockets draft either Cade or Green then trading Gordon would make sense. They will definitely re-sign Olynyk in that case, having passed on Mobley. Then Cade/Green will start with Porter at SG/SF with Wall at PG plus Jae’Sean Tate and Wood in the front court. Gordon’s playing time would drop considerably even as the 6th man with both Olynyk and KJ Martin also coming off the bench.
They won’t get much for Gordon, but trading for someone with an expiring contract makes sense.
Mentioned Beal being perfect for the Grizzlies a while ago. Without giving up JJJ or Morant it would be difficult but maybe they see value in Brooks, Winslow, Clarke and 2 first round picks..
That leaves the Grizzlies with something like Morant Beal Anderson JJJ Valacuinas as a starting 5 and Jones, Melton, Bane, Allen, Konkar, Porter and Tillman to make up a bench along with some a draft pick and some FA’s.
That’s a very decent side and still some young potential on the bench. Would need some good veteran role players but I’d say that’s a playoff team that would continue to get better.
Washington would have a bunch of scraps and 2 first round picks, they’d likely have to trade away players for picks and go for a complete rebuild. But I’m fairness besides Westbrook. Brooks, Bryant, Bertans, Winslow those are all easy to move contracts. Then for the start of your rebuild you have Hachimura, Avdija, Hutchinson, Gafford and Clarke.
I personally think Washington would need either more picks or want some more young talent if they were to trade Beal.
Washington would laugh at these proposed trades for Beal here. They’re so ridiculous.
