The Cavaliers are preparing to give restricted free agent Jarrett Allen a five-year offer worth approximately $100MM, Marc Stein of Substack tweets.
Cleveland traded for Allen in the multi-team James Harden blockbuster this past season with the intent of retaining Allen for years to come. The Cavaliers drafted USC big man Evan Mobley with the No. 3 overall pick on Thursday and want to pair him up with Allen to form their long-term frontcourt duo.
The Cavaliers reportedly view the Raptors as their main threat to re-signing Allen but it’s widely speculated that Cleveland would match any offer sheet. The five-year offer would be a preemptive strike by Cleveland’s front office to lock up Allen.
Allen averaged 13.2 PPG, 9.9 RPG, and 1.4 BPG across 51 contests after the Cavs acquired him.
I think that’s a bit of an overpay for him.
No more than OKC giving SGA $168M, talk about an overpay.
@green – huh?
Reminds me of the four year $100 million OKC gave Steven Adams
Absolutely insane. Will be a buyout/bad contract dump in no less than 2 years
He’s 23…
23 or 30 thats an insane contract for him. No such thing as a “proactive” 100 million dollar extension for someone who has been good but not great
23 year olds can be bad contracts too. Although is he maintains what he has done for the past five years to the next five years, it’s probably a good deal. He seems to have plateaued, but he’s on pretty good plateau. 13 points and 10 boards a game is probably worth $20MM per as long as the backcourt are good scorers.
On the higher end for an initial offer, but not insane at all. He’s 23, and a dominant defender. This is for 5 years (20 mm / year). Important to get out in front of the market with your own RFAs. Offer sheets can only be for 4 years, and tend to have nasty things in them, like trade kickers.
Why pre-empt? If TOR is going to offer more then they will do it anyway. If they were going to offer less then let them and match it. May be two reasons: (1) show the guy how much you want him to pump him up for the next season and (2) disrupt TOR plans especially if they are waiting to make other moves 1st before making an offer to Allen.
Rich Man’s Nerlens Noel…
Stupid to give him that contract. It won’t age well
why’d they draft Mobley then? seems redundant imo.
This really isn’t that bad of a deal to me. Centers without range have still signed massive deals in the recent past (think of Andre Drummond), and Allen is a really good interior defender. At the least, he has a high floor and he’s young enough that he can continue to get better.
In a league where a $9.5 MLE gets you a back-end rotation player, a little over twice that for a defensive anchor and a pick and roll partner doesn’t seem bad.
I wonder how they value Sexton?
Cavs being the Cavs. Incompetent.
Couldn’t have said it better.
Allen is gonna do well for a guy that will never reach the level of Drummond… just hoping they don’t get cheap on Sexton now & give him the max, otherwise anything below $25MM/year will be a real insult as he is sooo much better than Allen!
Love this move. Have to be aggressive (which 20 per is not crazy). Plus he’s under contract if/when they want to trade him.
Nice work from an otherwise clueless organization.
So they clearly have no plan for Mobley. Wasted pick.
