4:34pm: Although there’s mutual interest between the Celtics and Schröder, he’s still considering a few options, a source tell Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe (Twitter link). Himmelsbach adds that if Schröder ends up in Boston, it’s unlikely to happen via sign-and-trade.
1:28pm: The Celtics are holding negotiations with Lakers free agent guard Dennis Schröder, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report tweets.
Boston has been shopping for a point guard since trading Kemba Walker to Oklahoma City in a salary dump. It’s likely that the Celtics would dangle their mid-level exception to Schröder, whose value declined after a subpar postseason performance against Phoenix. Boston could theoretically pursue a sign-and-trade with the Lakers, but there would be a number of hurdles to clear to make that type of transaction.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, confirming the Celtics’ interest in Schröder, hears that the team could offer a one-year deal or a two-year deal with a player option.
Schröder’s foray into free agency has been a disappointment. He reportedly turned down a four-year, $84MM extension offer from the Lakers and bet on himself that he’d receive on the open market.
The door closed on a return to Los Angeles when the team agreed to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Wizards. Other clubs have not made an offer near what Schröder had hoped. The Knicks thought about signing Schröder but were lukewarm about that prospect even before they agreed to sign Walker (once he clears waivers) on a two-year deal in the $8-9MM annual range, according to Marc Stein of Substack.
If he fails to reach an agreement with Boston, it’s possible that Schröder could look to return to one of his former teams. according to Stein. The Thunder could give him a one-year contract above the $9.536MM mid-level exception that most teams can offer, though it’s unknown whether OKC would be interested in signing him.
Oklahoma City could use Schröder as a trade chip, while he could try to pump up his value and re-enter the market again next summer.
Warriors 5.9 million taxpayer exception? Not too many names left, Dubs need another point guard… unless Ben Simmons is on his way pick up some garlic ice cream.
I really can’t see the Warriors relying on Jordan Poole to be their number one ball handler Off the Bench. A little early for that.., he has only half a good season under his belt..
Right, but Schroder is going to want to go to a team where he can get minutes so he can…possibly…build up his value.
You’re probably right.
Minutes wouldn’t be the issue there. Using the $5.9M MLE will push the Warriors luxury tax bill near $200M, that’s the problem.
You’ve been saying that a couple years now, and a couple years now the Warriors haven’t given a crap about money. They continue to pay the luxury tax. I don’t think that it matters a hill of beans to the Warriors.
“A person can tell a lot about another person by watching what they DO.” You might want to write that down.
If you watch the Warriors trade Klay Thompson for a minimum dollar guy, then you may be onto something. But the Warriors did the opposite and gave him a MAX MONEY deal. They also gave big bucks to Draymond Green and they just signed Steph Curry to an astronomical multi-million dollar contract. Again, the tax means diddly-squat to the Golden State Warriors.
They’re obviously willing to pay a lot of tax but they’re at an unprecedented level of spending now and every team has a maximum budget.
Given that they’ve now gone a few seasons without a championship and the new arena hasn’t been as profitable as expected I think it’s safe to assume they’re pretty close to or ar their spending limit.
And though they like to talk a lot about their continued willingness to spend and have backed that up by spending a lot, there have still been a lot of actions that indicate they are concerned about spending still if you look closely. They carried a 14 man roster almost all of last year despite being plagued with injuries, they didn’t give JTA a 15 man roster spot until much later in the season than expected, the draft picks plus Wiggins package they were loudly shopping for a star actually would’ve been a cost saving move, they never seriously discussed any Oubre sign and trade options, and it appears they’re unlikely to use their TPMLE at all this year and they’ll likely go with a 14 man roster again to start the season. These are small things and none of them mean they Warriors are cheap, but they are indicators of a team at or near the limit of their budget.
BLB25, you are 100% correct!! But GreenWood Porter comes through here with his razor blade once in awhile and cuts our forearms, so I like to pull out my sword and Strike Back about every 6 months. As I said, he’s been saying this for years and I’ll have none of it.
But what you are saying here is 100% correct and I agree totally. Just don’t tell GreenWood Porter !!
Funny… I have robohouston muted, so his post is missing… but I guessed from the coldness and control of Gary’s reply, who he was responding to, ha.
As a Laker fan, I detest the Celtics. After watching Schröder last year, I recommend the Celtics sign him.
at this point there isn’t a lot more they can do, theis fans are angry at the moment and missing the playofss will be hard
Clearly Celtics are NOT interested in SNT
SNT would have cost them additional $50 million luxury tax.
Its direct signing.
Likewise, the Lakers are not interested in a S&T too –
Doesn’t look like Genies spending a dime more than she has to Rest of season
Ida loved getting a TPE outta him somehow but that’s probably a pipe-dream today
I was hoping sign and trade for Marcus smart.. his contract is cheap and he’s a lockdown defender
Lol keep dreaming
Round 2 FA negotiations always result in better bang for the buck. If the Celts can do the full MLE (non-taxpayer), it would be hard to go wrong at that price.
At this moment,
Schroeder has to sign with Thunder, then trade him to Celtics in January because of friendship.
Lakers are not planning to pay $100+ million luxury tax a single season.
Don’t have to give him 100m not even the 4yr 84m he blew that offer but need to find a cheaper way of keeping him for future assets period
I was hoping at the outset of FA a team like SAS might lurk around and just collect guys who got left out in the cold w bargains and see where they went afterwards
No org probably wants to be there so it’s not commonplace and there’s isn’t much of a template yet but maybe in the future we see a (team play) like this go down when the roster is up in the air
OKC seems to prefer the bird in hand (late 20s) pick for taking on bad cap but Id argue there might be more upside in using open cap in free agency on guys like this, getting below market low risk (short) signs, then flipping later when teams are in scramble mode at the deadline
I think the Knicks basically tried this in the 00’s, it just isn’t that beneficial to add guys for the sake of “value” if they’re not part of what you’re actually trying to build.
Look at the Kings – Fox, Haliburton, Heild, and Holmes on paper look at great value for a core – they all presumably have good trade value – but everyone outside SAC knows they’re not going to the playoffs.
OKC wants to find one more guy in the draft to pair forever with SGA, and until they land that guy, they’re not spending money to be the 00’s Knicks.
What I want to know, is how much money did OKC blow buying out Kemba, versus how much they left Seattle over?
Yea Id like to know that too, but I wouldn’t say “blow” considering Horford was worthless (to them at least)
But yea per dollar I don’t think it makes much sense for OKC next year when Horford was only going to get like 60% guaranteed. I can’t say Im in love w how OKC ultimately used cap at the end of the day this last year – (For a Silly #16 that they dished anyway? Rather see Sengun drafted by Okc at that point themselves )
Like DXC said a month ago, there’s really nothing sophisticated in thier approach or what any decent poster in here couldn’t accomplish at a fraction of the GM cost. I just wonder if there is a better way for future teams forced to run this playbook to net gains
I think Luke is a problem wherever he coaches (I don’t count GSW) for the Kings currently but agree they have talent
YEa understand your first paragraph working backwards and good example on Knicks, I was searching for one myself, maybe they just got the wrong players at the time? I get you never want to lose your identity but some times a bottom out year can bear fruits if played right imo. I really have no clue whats going on in SAS
Schroeder to the Celts? Love it.
– Knicks fans
Kemba Walker in New York… priceless.
– Celtics fans
We’ll take Schroeder! We need an experienced point guard but only at a lowball contract as our cheapskate owners have already written off this season. So no expectations which will allow a lot of guys, including Schroeder, to show what they have and give our new coach a chance to put together a high chemistry team.
I mean he really couldn’t do much worse than Kemba last year.
Celtics just need a role playing pg with all the ball handlers on the floor.
Id prob rather have Denis than Kemba and im not high on Denis
It’s close. Dennis is younger but was the 38% 3P shooting a fluke 2 years ago?
If so I might give the nod to Kemba given the same price
There is zero chance of a SNT for Smart. As a Lakers fan, I hope Steven’s is that dumb, but I doubt it.
Lakers should sign him before he excepts any low ball offer trade him before the deadline or next off season something close to 2yr 30m
Theirs talk brad stevens doesn’t like smart at all just like he had issues with Kemba so it’s a possibility.. smart contract is 13 mill..
Agreed that the idea of that is laughable. Celtics fans would absolutely revolt.
and the celtics lack rotation pieces, there’s no way they swap smart for another player
Give us smart an we will do it other than that no one else godo enough on that team that we can get
It’s a good place for him. They need help at the position. He could even take over as starter. If he’s really out to prove himself, eventually. Wow did not see this coming. I’m not a big fan of him. But he’s a guy who can be solid at the position. Just seems he wants to get paid to prove it. In my book it’s done the other way around. At that money Celtics should do it. Wow don’t you just love this game. What a FA period this yr. Never seen one like this.
Good move to goto C’s
Dunn And Richardson are the backups, Dallas got $$ and German friends
I am not big on Schroder but this could be a good fit for him and the Celts. Boston needs someone to share the main PG role w/smart (unless they make another move), and Schroder gets some playing time with a quality cast around him. Not a major needle mover, but a decent fit all around.
How stupid was he turning that down..
I can see the headline now: “Celtics trade Smart, sign Stupid”.
So simple and yet so funny. Nice job sir.
Celtics need a PG obviously but not sure how he fits alongside Tatum, brown, and smart
Obviously regretting turning down that extension whether he made that call or his agent
Weirdly as c”s fan I like this signing if it can happen
The Lakers dodged a bullet when Schroeder “bet on himself” and turned down that 4 year deal. Bottom line is, before you bet on yourself you had better have a clear understanding of who you are as a player.
Schroeder is a joke. He wanted $100-$120m is ludicrous. He’s not even worth the deal 4yr/84. I’m happy he won’t be back with purple and gold.
I wonder what the few options are? He must be begging the Lakers to put that 4/84 contract back on the table. What an idiot.
As a Laker fan I am so happy he bet on himself. Thanks Dennis
Celtics show interest but he’s considering other options.. meaning he’s looking for more than the veterans minimum.. would laugh if celtics pivot away from him..
