AUGUST 24: Richardson has officially signed his extension, according to RealGM’s transactions log.
AUGUST 23: The Celtics have agreed to tack on a one-year extension to the current contract of newly-acquired swingman Josh Richardson, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.
The former Mavericks wing’s contract was initially set to expire in 2022 after paying him $11.6MM this season. Charania notes that Richardson is now set to earn $24MM over the next two years, indicating that Richardson’s one-year extension will likely be worth about $12-13MM in 2022/23.
Earlier this summer, Richardson was sent to Boston in exchange for 7’2″ center Moses Brown in a one-for-one exchange. The Celtics used the remaining portion of their Gordon Hayward trade exception to accommodate the acquisition.
The 6’5″ Richardson, 27, will suit up for his fourth team in four seasons this fall. Initially drafted by the Heat with No. 40 pick out of Tennessee in 2015, he spent his first four seasons in Miami, flashing the potential to become a reliable 3-and-D wing, one of the hottest commodities in the NBA. He was sent to the Sixers as part of the Jimmy Butler sign-and-trade in the summer of 2019, and then was moved again, this time to the Mavericks, during the 2020 offseason.
During the 2020/21 season, Richardson averaged 12.1 PPG, 3.3 RPG and 2.5 APG, his worst output in those categories since becoming a full-time starter with the Heat in 2017/18. A career 35.8% shooter from long range (on 4.5 attempts a night), Richardson could help Boston in a more limited role as a floor spacer, supporting All-Stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
Richardson’s extension is the third one the Celtics have agreed to this month. The team also recently announced a new contract for Marcus Smart and also has a deal in place with Robert Williams.
Fattening up that contract for trade fodder! I like it B-Rad!!!
Well this is reaffirmation. He’s a solid 2way guard. Imo he’s a good sixth man here. He can backup Jalen. I’m sure he’s happy and he will come to play. Even though he had a bad shooting yr. He still shot 90% from FT last yr. He can have a big yr in Boston.
Wasn’t a great fit for Dallas. He was expected to be the 4th or occasional third guy. That’s asking too much of him and I’m not trying to knock the guy it’s just reality
It’s going to be interesting to see how this team plays this year. IMO, much better team than last year, but unless Tatum and Brown take a HUGE step up, their ceiling is still second round.
I don’t mind this signing, but I don’t see the way to the top for this team.
I don’t disagree because the East should be better, but if they face a team like Brooklyn and they have injuries they could win that series. Embiid is fragile as well, so you really never know, but yeah they’d definitely need help
The east will still be top-heavy with the Nets, Bucks, and maybe the Hawks. Who else is going to make it better? Certainly not the Sixers.
Bostons not making the playoffs
No one sees a title ahead. But you make your own luck. By being there if something happens. And with these players we have now & for a few years, we could become a very cohesive team! Wouldn’t that be fun to watch?
Jaylen & JT already been past the 2nd rd, how could 2nd rd be their ceiling? Plus both guys are much better than they were back then. They’ve beaten Embiid, beaten Giannis & there’s no doubt they’re gonna be a force in the league next yr & for yrs to come as long as they stay reasonably healthy. Their young nucleus is very strong. They’re right up there with Atl at the top of the league as far as young talent. Plus Kanter & Schroeder are 2 HUGE pickups for them. Obv JoRich is gonna help alot too but I still think Nesmith & Romeo are both gonna have big impacts this yr for Boston
Kanter and Schroder don’t play much defense either.
They’re not huge pick ups, that’s why they’re getting backup money.
Seriously? Dennis the Menace was a big part of the Lakers defense being ranked so well last year.
Ok Sank, you convinced me. ha.
Like the Celtics nucleus also. It appears that the Celtic’s one weakness is their interior players. Not many big guys to match up with the big teams in the league.
Richardson gives them depth. And if he has a bounce back yr, it’s solid depth. He had good yrs before Mavs. He will get good looks in Boston. Plus he plays D. I see this as a wi win. Celtics are better and deeper. Now they have to prove how much they want. I still think they need a rim protector to really make noise.
That’s a waste of money, he was underwhelming for the Mavericks last year.
Richardson and Dunn for Dragic.
I would rather have Dunn and Richardson. Both add defense. If Dunn is healthy he is a top tier defender and an above average playmaker. He also seems to always get hurt just as he finds his shooting stroke. If you ever paid attention to him in college, you would know when healthy he is a capable shooter. It’s just a matter of staying healthy in order to stay within his rhythm. Perhaps a lesser role could help keep him more healthy.
Me too! I’d rather have Dunn & Richardson. Dragic is great but older while Josh Richardson can score & is a very good defender. Plus I’m hoping Kris Dunn will surprise us after reading about his college career & his defense. There’s a lot of upside on the Celtics this year.
Celtics turned Semi Ojeleye and Theis into rotation players… Isaiah Thomas and Brown into an all stars… FAIK Richardson may surpass his old form as a Heat player
Semi was always bad.
It’s amazing how many of you clowns that this was great deal and he was horrible in Dallas because he didn’t fit
But when he was traded here you all said what a stupid move for a garbage player or hopefully he’s just trade bait
He is a solid player . Good defender and can bring the ball up . Hopefully he can find his shooting touch . I hate to say this but I think he is a better player than Fournier .
I would rather have Fournier, of course there is a cost there.
Richrdsn did not impress Doncic, that was crucial… nor the Sixers.
I was surprised he didnt opt out, to be honest. Thought he could get about that over 3 or 4 years
If he’s in your top-7 rotation you may win some games but not any banners (League or Conference).
only reason celtics do this is for ability to now trade him?
