Jabari Parker earned a $100K guarantee by staying on the Celtics‘ roster this week, but he will still have to win a job in training camp, writes Brian Robb of MassLive. Parker signed with Boston in April and averaged 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds over the final 10 games of the season while playing 13.8 minutes per night . The remainder of his $2.283MM contract is non-guaranteed, but he will receive $1,141,517 if he’s still with the team on opening night.
Robb believes Parker has a decent shot at sticking with the Celtics, who don’t have another reliable scorer off the bench at power forward. However, sources tell Robb that Boston continues to explore roster additions, and finding another forward could affect Parker’s prospects. He adds that trading Carsen Edwards or Kris Dunn would be another option to trim the roster to 15 players.
There’s more from Boston:
- The extensions the Celtics gave to Marcus Smart, Robert Williams and Josh Richardson will limit their roster flexibility next summer, Robb states in a separate story. The luxury tax line for the 2022/23 season will be about $145MM, and the new extensions leave Boston with a commitment of $141MM for 10 players. That could change if the Celtics decide to waive or stretch the contract of Al Horford, who only has a $14.5MM guarantee on his $26.5MM salary for 2022/23. Getting rid of Horford could open anywhere from $12MM to $18MM.
- With only $48MM in guaranteed money, the extension for Williams could turn out to be one of the best deals of the summer, contends Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston. Forsberg reports that the Celtics looked at several power forwards this summer and have the assets to make a deal if one becomes available.
- In case you missed it, we relayed several details on Williams’ extension earlier in the week.
We should keep Parker we need a bench scorer and he’s decent on defense. He could be a better shooter but slashes well for a big. They could even use him and small forward if needed
I agree.
They should get rid of Edwards .. he’s a liability.
we should try to keep Dunn to add to an already scary defense
I agree on the bench scoring, but he’s a black hole on D…
Parker isnt decent defender.he suck. Dunn very great defender but too injury prone.
Can you imagine Dunn, Smart, JB, Tatum and Time Lord as a lockdown lineup? Two bulldogs on the perimeter…as a guy who grew up watching the 80’s and 90’s NBA defenses, I’m excited by the thought..
im loving this boston team now. and also Shroeder whos a decent to good defender too
Dennis is so so on D… Better than Kyrie or IT of course… But nothing to brag about.
Dunn and smart at backcourt are great dog.but it will kill celtic offense.dunn handle is good, but he wasnt good playmaker. He is not a same dunn after he landed with his face
I agree with you… I’m talking about a shut down line up… When you need a stop.
Celtics would be fools to let Jabari go. He was excellent for them last yr. And wasn’t even in top shape. Seems to me, he showed. He’s finally accepted the rotation player role. He’s still young enough to have a career as that. He’s good offense off the bench. And knows hot to play in close gms. Celtics need to keep him.
Parker is fat and lazy. Still thinks he is a superstar, and takes conditioning as an optional requirement. A selfish player on the court, cannot believe the Celtics have him on their roster.
They need Jabari cause they lack depth at the 4 spot. It’s a very very long shot but I could see him starting towards the end of the season.
Have Schroder or Smart at the 1, Brown Tatum Parker and Horford. 3 good scorers and centre that plays decent defence and spaces the floor a little and a great defensive 1
Parker didnt play defense.i still remember when he said “bulls didnt pay me for play defense.”.but cheap parker is good for celtic. they need scoring bench
I liked the Dunn pickup & these are the kinda deals on the edges a team like the Celtics should be making. He’s young with upside and as is, is a really good defender & a decent all-around player. Not a great shooter, but not like he can’t score, and he does enough everywhere else where he can fit on any team. Plays really good D, can pass, rebound decent for a guard & can pass. I think If the Celts can finagle a 4 with comparable value, they could move him, but otherwise I think they like what Dunn brings. They shouldn’t move Dunn just to get him off roster or to, of all things, “trim down the roster”. That should be done by trading Edwards for a 2nd, or letting go of jabari.
As for Jabari, I agree, that while he is kinda weak on DEF end, he does give them a little offense from PF spot. I think you almost have to keep him unless you find a 4 or Hauser bulks up & proves able. Which I wouldn’t count on in yr 1. Love won’t let Cleveland buy him out. He’s gotta be the only player who doesn’t wanna leave Cleveland. I heard he has anxiety so maybe thought of another moving to another team again scares him. Otherwise, I don’t get the dude. I really think Celts dropped the ball on Markannen. And I’ve been with Brad every step of way this off-season. Someone said to me, Celts weren’t gonna match offer CHi got for Lauri. Lauri was sitting there for what felt like 2 months. If they acted faster, CLE/POR wouldn’t even have been in picture. While Markannen wouldn’t really help on DEF end, think what he would’ve brought on OFF end would’ve been massive. Not just what his own production would be. It’s the space he’d create for Jays with his shooting & drawing out other 4’s so Jays could go to work. And if you could get him to mix in some post work which he’s really good at, when he’s willing. HeS just rarely willing, but a good coach might be able to unlock that. Oh well, that’s done & he ain’t coming. I’ve heard Milsap, which I wouldn’t hate. Just someone off bench to give Tatum a break, and also allow JT to play some SF for stretches-which clearly better suits him. I don’t know who doesn’t feel better bout team tho. Brad really did as nice job. I don’t know where the haters get off. The guy was given a team up against the cap with almost zero flexibility. There’s an idiot on the radio Named Michael Felger. He for some reason doesn’t understand how the Celtics went from setting selves up for cap space and next thing they started extending guys. Yet in past he tries to troll BOS fans by telling em BOS isn’t a destination. The extensions of Rob, Smart & Richardson actually add value. They were signing 1 yr deals cuz they wanted the flexibility. And didn’t want to overpay FAs with yrs and money. But these extensions aren’t same thing. These are good deals, that aren’t overpays. They add value to the players. This way, it’s not all eggs in the Bradley Beal bucket. You extend these guys so you don’t lose them for nothing. And everyone bashing the TPEs. Maybe they don’t use all of em. But would you rather them have not gotten 1 for Evan? Like, if you can get 1 in a S & T, you should. What’s the downside? I just feel like some just wanna complain about everything. Celtics can easily move these guys if a FA comes available, and if some1 becomes available via trade, these extensions help. And if No1 worthwhile is available, you at least don’t lose these guys & get worst. Nesmith, Pritchard showed something & Romeo has flashed & it’s obv something is there. He just needs some urgency or he isn’t gonna realize anything in BoS. Fools can ignore the last half decade & act like last yr is all that matters. But last yr was a weird yr & they literally led league in covid. They didn’t have JB/Kemba for playoffs and Rob played hurt. Yeah the reg season was brutal and the players were soft & down disgustingly & shamefully quit on their coach cuz he was white. But now there is black coach & so I would expect them to try again & not be so weak & soft. Plus JT got screwed on All-NBA & went down in his 2K rating. So maybe he’s starting to learn that team success is what we all care about. And he will prioritize winning going forward. Not the ideal way I would want him to learn that fact. You wish it wouldn’t take an All-NBA & NBA 2k snub, but if it gets him locked in, then I’ll take it. Celts are finishing no worst than 4 seed this yr, and in all honesty, I could easily see them finishing in top 3, maybe even 2 see. Y’all wanna ride ATL, NY or MiA, be my guess. East def caught up to west. Even Indiana & Chicago should finish ova .500. But Only team I’d pick ova BOS is Nets, and I think it’s dead heat between Bucks & the C’s.
Chris Sale is a beast. Anyone who bitched about the extension doesn’t deserve to cheer for him now!!!
Celts always should favor tall guys over shorter tall guys. Hope we give 6’8″ Jabari Parker a real chance if he’s in shape. Kris Dunn I don’t know but he should get a real chance too reading his bio. Bruno Fernando too.
Carsen Edwards impressed me, finally, in Summer League with his speed & energy. Celts played super fast and exciting & Edwards was a big part! But he’s too short & if he has to go, I hope he gets a chance elsewhere.
