Sidney Lowe is joining the Cavaliers’ staff as an assistant, Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Lowe, 61, was most recently on the Pistons’ staff. Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff lost an assistant when Lindsay Gottlieb left the organization to become the women’s head coach at USC. Lowe has coached in the league for 30 years.
We have more on the Central Division:
- The sign-and-trade with the Pelicans brought Lonzo Ball to an organization that wanted him — the Bulls. Acquired in a sign-and-trade, Ball appreciates how his new bosses feel about him, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times writes. “Just me personally, I feel like they wanted me,” he said. “And I want to play for someone that wants me to play for them. So that was attractive.’’
- When DeMar DeRozan saw that Bulls were bringing in Ball, they didn’t need to do a hard sell to convince him to join the team, Cowley notes in the same story. DeRozan also came aboard in a sign-and-trade. “You could see what they were working toward, and it was something I wanted to be a part of,’ he said. “It wasn’t too much of a pitch that they had to make after that.’’
- The Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Pacers’ G League affiliate, will play nine games in Indianapolis next season, Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files reports. The Mad Ants will also play 15 games on their home court. Those games in Indiana will make it easier for the Pacers to shuttle players back and forth between the NBA and the G League, if necessary.
So confused about Sidney Lowe hire. We need offensive-type asst. coach so bad and they hired someone whose last NBA season avg. 2 pts on 31% shooting in 20 min a game…can any Pistons fans explain to me the type if coach he is? I’m curious and can’t find much about his coaching style except that he hasn’t really won anywhere he coached.
Are you seriously judging a coach by his playing stats
Those who can’t do, teach.
If you’re 6ft even and you played in the NBA you’re really good at basketball.
lol you should have watched the process years
And yeah I guess I shouldnt judge by his playing stats, but if there is a youtube video titled “worst coach in history” (link to youtu.be) and have a record of 79-228…you got to ask some questions about him
At NC St. he was one of the best quarterback-type PGs I have seen his senior year, but not that talented. Team was not that great until they got healthy. Maybe 3rd-best on the 1983 NCAA champion. I can still picture their look and composure, but we get reminded of Jim Volvano’s celebration afterwards!
Lowe did not move around much but did not seem to have to. Had gravitas, knee bend, head up, maximized a situation. Back in the day when there were grown men on college teams.
IDK as a coach.
Gottlieb took two years from a stalled career to boost her resume, then took over at USC. She was young when she took over Cal and was all about building confidence in players… they were an undisciplined bunch at first. I rooted against. But the strategy was okay.
Yeah I mean I guess I never saw him play or know about his college history. He obviously was good enough to play in the NBA. I am just confused on why him as the guy to fill our vacancy you know? But I mean I hope he ends up being really successful with us, I mean why wouldn’t I.
He will probably address maturity, just guessing, he would be good for that.
Offensive sets… I am seeing in SL the 122 set with 2 at the paint corners and 2 at the court corners; Mobley at a high post. It looks good if players cooperate. But no obvious place for Sexton. That would be pre-Lowe so somebody is working at it. The new set probably has a more precise name than 5-out.
It could be maturity, but I feel that our group of guys are so mature for their age already, right? But I guess, and huge emphasis on this, I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, so he could be the right guy for filling a role we didn’t know needed to be filled.
I like what Outlaw has been running, no complaints there, my only thing though is the whole team is putting so much effort into running everything through Mobley atm it has sorta forced him into a lot of mistakes. Obviously this wont be the case in regular season though. Idk about you, but I believe the Cavs could thrive in a modified 7 second offense. We don’t have a lot of shooting so to replace it they could run the floor and get into a very quick 3-2 type offense to have Allen and Mobley set quick on and off-ball screens or get mobley quick touches down low. Idk I just feel that this team is too young to be very efficient in the half-court rn. They do have the legs though to get up and down the floor and it’s what they should focus on imo.
Yeah, Sexton is the million(s of) dollar(s) question literally. Hopefully this being year 2 of having the same coach they will figure out how to make him work. (Kinda why we need a really good offensive asst., but the Cavs will figure it out)
Great point. Phil Jackson only averaged about 7 points a game during his career. He turned out to be a terrible offensive coach.
@jjvot @Eta34, lol calm down guys, my point is we really need a guy that can get our team, who was last in three’s last year, into spots and work on offensive sets. That is what Lindsey Gotlieb was for. JB Bickerstaff isn’t an offensive coach by any means. But anyways from his stats, it looks like that wasn’t his specialty. I’m not the only one feeling this way, many Cavs fans are on twitter, not that that means much.
Also @Eta34, Phil had an 11 point, 8 point in a year as a PF. He was a very solid player with 800 games under his belt. And he was also not some offensive genius. He happened to play the triangle and coach some GOATs. But whatever.
Well I take back that Phil not being an offensive genius comment, but point is Phil and Sidney Lowe really aren’t comparable imo.
This was not a strong look for you.
Haha it happens, I’m human believe it or not ;)
He wasn’t gifted as a player but he took a team to the NCAA championship then made a team with limited skills but just smart. Be happy to have him I think he would be a great college coach.
This new Bulls regime knows what they’re doing.
Highly sought after with all those championships in 30 years…
what a great plan indiana has started with their gl affiliate. very impressive with the forward thinking by management.
Bulls squad might be one thing this year.
Vucevic
Williams
Demar
LaVine
Ball
Bench needs work, spent a lot on Caruso.
Something**
I think the bench will be fine the coach is great listen to this Pax/Gar you could’ve done this but management is now awesome we love them .
Zo & DMDR are such great gets for CHI… One must hope that Zion manages to get out of the dumpster fire that the Pels are asap… I mean all the hoops fans want him to get out, even all of the 12 Pels fans that’s for sure!
