Rookie center Charles Bassey, one of the last unsigned players from the 2021 draft class, intends to sign his required one-year tender from the Sixers, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic. According to Charania, Bassey and the 76ers have thus far been unable to agree to terms on a longer-term deal.
In order to retain the rights to a second-round draft pick, an NBA team must submit a “required tender” to him. That tender is equivalent to offering a non-guaranteed minimum-salary contract covering just a single season, so it provides no assurances or security to the player.
Bassey, the No. 53 overall pick, may view signing that tender as his best path to either earning a 15-man roster spot with the Sixers or forcing the team to waive him before the season begins, allowing him to catch on elsewhere.
The Sixers only have 14 players on standard contracts for the time being, so Bassey could theoretically become the team’s 15th man for the regular season. However, Philadelphia may prefer to keep that last spot open to reduce its projected tax bill — it’s unclear if the 76ers want to stash Bassey overseas or in the G League, or if the rookie simply hasn’t been satisfied with the years and dollars the team is offering.
If he signs his tender and then is released by Philadelphia before the regular season starts, Bassey wouldn’t be eligible to sign a two-way contract with another NBA team during the 2021/22 league year, which would significantly reduce his options.
Bassey, 20, played his college ball at Western Kentucky, averaging a double-double (17.6 PPG, 11.6 RPG) as a junior in 2020/21 before declaring for the draft.
They are worried about their tax bill but gave trash Danny Green 10 million? lol
casual smh
Wasn’t this the route Jalen McDaniels took? And he ended up with a multi-year deal out of it…
I believe you mean KJ McDaniels. He did end up getting a contract from Houston after philly traded him. He probably made out slightly better since they gave him $6 million. The Sixers were probably offering the typical second rounder deal which would have probably gotten him close to that but without guarantees. He is currently out of the league
Looks like you commented the same thing right before me lol. So @rxbrbg, what he said^
That’s funny, I forgot about KJ and he’s a McDaniels too. No, I mean Jalen. But looking further into it, he may have signed an Exhibit 10 (if that’s at all different than the tender), then had it converted to a two-way before agreeing to this current multi-year deal shortly thereafter.
Exhibit 10 is different. That’s a minimum salary contract that basically secures the players g league rights. They can be converted to two-way contract, which can then be converted to a standard contract. I believe that’s what happened with Jalen. Bassey and KJ are going another route which is essentially a one year non guaranteed contract for the minimum that will make him an RFA after the rookie year.
i believe that if KJ had sign the standard 2-4yr deal he would’ve got more playing time on a depleted sixers teams and would’ve ended up making more like Covington. When he signed with Houston he essentially became the 15th man and his development was stunted because he wasn’t playing everyday. Sometimes most people need a shot to establish themselves. He could’ve started for the Process Sixers would get experience and easily 20mins+ a game and maybe he could’ve stuck around in the league longer.
I think you’re thinking of KJ McDaniels. He was drafted 32nd but signed a one year minimum non-guaranteed deal to make him restricted FA after one season. Funny how it was also with the 76ers and also because he wasn’t happy with the contract they offered.
Saw him play a bit at WKU this past season, I would roll the dice with him
Good for Bassey. More 2nd rounders should do this when the team doesn’t want to guarantee much $$ if any.
It’s a huge risk for a dude taken at the end of the 2nd. At least he can get one, possibly two guaranteed seasons instead of $0 and risking injury or poor performance/opportunity limit his earning potential
I assume he wasn’t offered a guaranteed deal beyond this season (or even fully for it), or he’d have signed the contract. My guess is it was either a NG multi-year deal (with no more than 100K guaranteed) or a 2wc. A means of contractual control without a team commitment. For an “older” player like Bassey who can contribute now, but at a position with no inherent pricing power, there is no benefit to being warehoused in this manner. It’s really “no risk” (financially at least) to just insist on 1 year and then be free on his end as well. He’ll probably be on their G-league team either way, but at least he’ll be a UFA.
He wouldn’t be a ufa,gotta play 3 years first.
If he’s released prior to the date his Contract expires (which is how a team would deal with a NG contract if they don’t want to keep him at his salary), then he’s a UFA. Even if he thereafter signs a GL contract (non-2wc) with the team, he stays an UFA while in the GL and after the season.
If he’s released at any point,he’ll be a Ufa,but he would still need to be released.Signing the 1 year tender still don’t set him up for unrestricted free agency any sooner, unless they’re only offering 4 year contracts.
Don’t really matter though, since restricted free agency would only give them the right to match any offer. If he gets heavy minutes when Embiid don’t play, and he shows something, that’s where taking the 1 year deal can help him.Show some potential, get his name thrown around, then end up getting decent offers.
The guy was barely drafted, I am not sure that it is a great move. Most second round picks only get their initial deal in the nba and that’s it. Him signing a one year tender to be a fifteenth man does nothing for his value.
