AUGUST 8: The Clippers have officially signed Winslow, the team announced today in a press release.
AUGUST 6: The Clippers are in agreement with free agent forward Justise Winslow on a two-year deal, his agents Austin Brown and Erika Ruiz tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
The Clippers are using the taxpayer mid-level exception to sign Winslow, Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times tweets. According to Greif, there are no options on the deal’s second season.
Winslow became an unrestricted free agent at the beginning of the month when Memphis declined a $13MM option on his contract.
Winslow’s career has been sidetracked by hip and back injuries but, if healthy, he could jump into the Clippers’ rotation. He appeared in just 11 games with Miami during the 2019/20 season. He was traded to the Grizzlies in February 2020 but didn’t make his team debut until late February this year.
Winslow had trouble scraping off the rust, averaging 6.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 1.9 APG in 19.5 MPG while shooting 35.1% from the field in 26 games.
In his last full season, Winslow averaged 12.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 4.3 APG in 2018/19 while being used at times as a point forward. Winslow, 25, provides a boost at the wing spot, which is much needed since Kawhi Leonard is expected to miss most of next season after undergoing knee surgery.
Interesting. Not sure I get the fit, unless they’re using Batum primarily as a 3…I guess that’s plausible without Kawhi. Could also give depth at PG behind Reggie Jackson, or if Patrick Beverly gets hurt or just to give them more size at that spot in q certain matchup, although there is some redundancy with him and Terrence Mann as a guard. So I would guess he is primarily backing up Marcus Morris at the 4. Hopefully they can put enough shooting around him in those lineups…was hoping for a reunion with the Heat, but they went with Markiedd Morris and Pj Tucker instead, and thought some other teams made sense.
Winslow can’t shoot so I don’t see the redundancy with him and Mann.
Thought when he was drafted he would be better than what he turned out ( like a chandler player or Ariza ) . He has a chance to turn it around . Let’s hope he does .
I thought he was definitely going back to Miami. Great pick up. Let’s go teams in the Western conference. Let’s hope some team beats LBJ and his team of over the hill players.
The west looks way open . Suns , Utah , Lakers , and denver are the top teams in my opinion. GS might be if things workout with their injury.
Nice move, can’t lose here. And it could pay off big. Winslow needs to show he’s still got it. Only 24 and with Kawhi out. He’s got a chance to really help here. Nice
I’m amazed at all the movement. But most seem like good moves for the team. Just amazing to me. Wish Winslow the best, still has a whole career in front of him.
LAC have eschewed any notions of creating an identity, so there’s no such thing as fit (or, maybe, not being a “fit” with the current guys, is being the “fit” they want, because you never know when Lue will have his next big idea and what type of player it might involve).
So, it’s all about the player and the price. If it’s at minimum, its a good deal. If they’re giving him the Txp-MLE, I’d wonder if he’s the best use of it.
Would have liked the Sixers to tab him.
A hope he’s healthy and of he is a steal. I like this signing but the clippers aren’t a championship team.
Solid move by the Clippers…and for Winslow, he could get a larger role here than elsewhere.
w/ Kawhi out definitely. Not a bad move by LAC to take a swing on what will probably be a throwaway season for them.
Now bring back Boogie!
