The two second-round picks the Bucks sent to the Grizzlies in the Grayson Allen trade were the 2024 and 2026 selections Milwaukee had just acquired from Indiana in a trade for the No. 31 pick, according to RealGM.
In the deal with Indiana, Milwaukee gave up the No. 31 selection in exchange for this year’s Nos. 54 and 60 selections along with those two future second-rounders. The team subsequently flipped the second-rounders to Memphis along with Sam Merrill for Allen.
The upshot is that the Bucks gave up Merrill and the No. 31 pick (Isaiah Todd) in exchange for Allen, the No. 54 pick (Sandro Mamukelashvili), and the No. 60 pick (Georgios Kalaitzakis).
Here’s more from around the East:
- The Pacers officially announced a pair of additions to Rick Carlisle‘s staff, stating in a press release that Jannero Pargo has been hired as a player development assistant and Zach Chu has come aboard as the team’s manager of game strategy and analytics. Pargo spent the last two seasons with Portland, while Chu worked under Carlisle in Dallas.
- Jimmy Butler‘s new maximum-salary extension with the Heat will actually be a three-year deal that begins in 2023/24, meaning it’s being tacked onto his 2022/23 player option, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Instagram video). Butler’s salary in ’23/24 will likely be 35% of that year’s cap, so the exact value of his extension isn’t yet known.
- The Heat are taking their usual approach to their two-way contract slots, not filling them right away and instead auditioning several players for those openings. As Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel writes, the next week at the Las Vegas Summer League could go a long way toward determining which players have the leg up for those spots. Javonte Smart, A.J. Lawson, RJ Nembhard, Micah Potter, and Marcus Garrett are expected to be in the mix.
Marcus Garrett will 100% get 1 of those spots… as for the other, it’s going to be hard to determine who doesnt get brought to training camp…a lot of these guys have a couple of similarities, yet also have somewhat different qualities. There is an argument to be made for as many as 9 guys, and that needs to be cut down to 5 for training camp, and then 1 for the extra 2 way spot…with preliminary information, and a little of what we’ve seen so far, So far, I have Garrett and Dejon Jerreau at the top, and then Javonte Smart, DJ Stewart, Tyson Carter, and RJ Nembhard in the next tier, and then Aj Lawson, Dru Smith, and Justin Smith slightly below that…
Smart and Nembhard are tricky b/c they are similar to each other. Smart is a combo guard like a remedial Dion Waiters/Kendrick Nunn/stronger Reggie Jackson. Nembhart is a combo guard/wing like Waiters/Will Barton…Nembhart might be better with shot selection, and Smart is possibly a better playmaker…Carter has some similarities to Garrett, as a disruptive full court defender, but is better offensively, although he also needs to add strength, and an in between game…then there is DJ Stewart and Aj Lawson, where Lawson is more of a spot up shooter, with defensive potential, but Stewart does bring that defensive energy, cuts hard, and can attack, but his jumpshot isnt that clean…Dru Smith is an interesting guard that plays hard, is a solid defender, a playmaker, and controls the pace pretty decently, but I think he is behind Jerreau and Carter, and dont see him ahead of the combo guards either. I could see them wanting him for the Skyforce though
So I think it comes down to Smart or Nembhard, and Stewart or Lawson, with the other 3 being Garrett, Jerreau, and Carter…but I could be wrong lol. It feels especially difficult this year. The Heat did a great job of adding a bunch of guys that defend and do a lot of the stuff they need at the guard/wing spots
Comment is longer than the article
He’s probably a Heat fan, so he’s probably passionate about who’s on his team. No problem with that. I agree though I think Garrett locked himself in one of those spots last night, or at least a two-way on someone’s team. Showed his 4 yr college defending experience and a smart 6-5 defender who still has shooting potential will be welcomed in todays NbA.
Ya Garrett needs to improve his handle, and his jumpshot, but I actually thought we already saw a tiny improvement in both of those things, just since the 1st Sacramento game, which is pretty crazy. His shot also got better every year in college, so that’s a good sign. He has Heat DNA. I would be really surprised if they dont keep him. He is an elite defender for sure, and he guards all 94 feet
Almost deleted the whole thing before posting it b/c I anticipated someone saying that…
Jarreau looked very good in limited minutes on Sunday.
Maybe they will give him more of an opportunity to play next game.
I hope to see a lot more of him. Seeing video of him before summer league, I’m sold on him. He defends, and really knows what he’s doing as a playmaker, and attacker. Seems to have a strong basketball IQ
Well…looks like Lawson made that decision slightly easier. I kind of called someone picking up 1 or 2 of these guys this summer, but the next day? Lol
Atlanta feels like an odd spot. Dont see a spot for him there either
Potter is a big body that can shoot the 3. We can use him
Butler is a genius. He’s much richer, happier, and has much better image than when he played in MN or
Philly.
