The Pelicans, Mavericks, Celtics, and Timberwolves are among the teams that have shown interest in Bulls restricted free agent Lauri Markkanen, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, who hears from sources that the price tag on the power forward would be about $15MM per year.
Landing Markkanen would be a challenge for any of those teams, however, as they’re all over the cap and would have to acquire the RFA forward via sign-and-trade. New Orleans has a traded player exception big enough to fit Markkanen, but the other teams would likely to have rely on salary-matching or offer him a lower salary (Dallas has a TPE worth $10.872MM, while Boston has one worth $9.72MM). Acquiring a player via sign-and-trade also results in a hard cap, which the Celtics are reportedly resisting.
On top of all that, Fischer confirms a previous report that the Bulls are seeking a first-round pick to accommodate a Markkanen sign-and-trade and don’t want to take on any salary, preferring any contracts to be rerouted to a third team. If they maintain that stance, the Bulls would make it very difficult for Markkanen to do anything but accept his $9MM qualifying offer.
“Chicago is playing this masterfully from no other perspective than a contract management standpoint,” a team capologist told Fischer. “It won’t do any favors relationship-wise, but they’re bleeding his market based on their tax situation, and nobody else can offer him any kind of money without them.”
As we wait to see what happens with Markkanen, it’s worth noting that the Hornets – previously rumored to be eyeing the forward – weren’t listed by Fischer as one of the teams in the hunt, and president of basketball operations Mitch Kupchak told reporters today that the team is likely done with its “heavy lifting” this offseason (Twitter link via Rod Boone of SI.com).
Here’s more from Fischer:
- The Sixers, Suns, Trail Blazers, Warriors, Celtics, and Knicks were among the teams that expressed interest in DeMar DeRozan before he reached a deal with the Bulls, per Fischer. However, New York agreed to sign Evan Fournier and most of the other teams would’ve had to figure out complicated sign-and-trade arrangements to accommodate DeRozan, who never really entertained the idea of signing for the mid-level exception, sources tell Fischer.
- The Pelicans and Kings discussed the possibility of swapping Buddy Hield and Josh Hart (via sign-and-trade) as part of New Orleans’ trade with Memphis, Fischer writes. It’s unclear if anything along those lines is still being considered now that the Pelicans’ deal with the Grizzlies has been completed — base year compensation rules would complicate a one-for-one swap.
- The Suns are weighing their options for their final open roster spot and have gauged the trade value of 2020 lottery pick Jalen Smith, sources tell Fischer.
- The Raptors will meet with Goran Dragic‘s camp at Summer League in Las Vegas to further discuss the point guard’s situation, according to Fischer.
- Zach LaVine has told Bulls staffers he’s committed to improving defensively next season, Fischer says.
Lauri needs a new agent. He’s cost himself some serious money over the past year. e.g., Passing up extension, passing up $$ when cap space was still out there, etc.
Probably the same agent as Schroeder’s.
Looked it up for the hell of it and his agent is Michael Lelchitski. He has only one client, Lauri. Agreed that he needs a new agent, so Lelchitski might be out of a job soon.
Second cousin on his mother’s side
And he needs to play some defense too
Celtics won’t offer market value to Lauri and Schroeder
In other words, Celtics are not interested in SNT
Clearly it’s direct signing
Celtics are tight wads their patience will get them another championship in 35yrs LOL
Celtics could probably have put together a championship squad. Once they had Tatum they should have moved future assets for a Kawhi or PG13 etc.. got them over the hump.
Bulls can insist on not taking players back, but if it comes out that way, they wouldn’t also get a pick (teams in that spot – Boston last year with CHA – give a pick for the TPE). Nets held out for no players and getting a few 2nds with the TPE, but they had the WIZ in a spot where they needed to use RW’s excess salary in their big trade.
Bulls have the ability to simply pull the QO or he can accept it, they don’t have to make a move to help another team. That should be obvious ugh.
No team makes a move to help another team. Yes, obvious, and I never suggested anything of the sort. Also obvious, for the literate, anyway.
This message is unclear and I know so many words
I wish the Sixers could get in the mix for Hart somehow. I think he’d be a great fit for the team.
LaVine is going to LEARN how to play defense all of the sudden? If he hasn’t figured out by now that it just takes hard work then not much hope.
Zach hasn’t shown me he’s a winner and Markkanen has no heart. I mean, when was the last team they were on a team that won more games than they lost? Or played more than 50 games in a season for that matter? I’d move on if I could. Zach is only about Zach and his money.
He can teach Simmons how to shoot, then Ben can teach LaVine how to play defense. It’s such a simple solution that would solve both their problems.
Zach plays 50+ games every year except when he was injured early in his career, also if you watched the olympics and understand basketball slightly you can see he was taking his defense seriously there
Playing defense for a couple of weeks and doing it for 6 months are 2 completely different animals which you would know if you watched basketball and weren’t Lavine’s relative apparently. Plus if you don’t play D for Pop you don’t play.
If Lauri Markkanen really wants out of Chicago him and his agent should follow what a lot of these players are doing, force Chi to make a deal. I read where he said he really wanted a change on scenery a fresh start somewhere else then he should be more forceful in his actions to make that happen.
He doesn’t hVe any power.
You need to be good to do that lol. Nobody wants to/can afford to pay him what he wants. He’s stuck and he really has nobody to blame but himself (crappy play and an inflated sense of your value will do that).
As far as Josh Hart is concerned I just wish David Griffin and my Pels keep him because his intangibles are through the roof. Hart is one of those players every team needs he’s the hardest working dude out there and I think Willie Green can work wonders with him. Griff got rid of Lonzo Ball for next to nothing at least keep 2/3 of the AD trade and see how it develops.
Lauri Markkanen Seems going to turn out like a Ryan Anderson player . He should accept a mid level contract and then try to improve his game . Think he would fit with the pelicans.
Lauri should take his game to Europe cause he is way too soft to play in the NBA.
Hopefully Knicks made the right choice Fournier over DeRozan or Oubre
@cbrookhouzen… Funny you say that when it is obvious to anyone that the NBA is way softer than Euro game, but keep telling yourself that & be happy man!
I would like to see Lauri go to Dallas but I don’t think the Mavs want to use the TPE in a SnT because that would hard cap them.
They’re already hard-capped due to having used the full MLE on Bullock and the BAE on Brown.
This looks like Lauri will be forced to take the QO and stay in Chicago to me. Looks like an uncomfortable relationship.
