In order to create room on their 20-man roster to accommodate a one-for-two trade with the Timberwolves, the Grizzlies have waived wing Sean McDermott, the team announced today in a press release.
McDermott, who went undrafted out of Butler in 2020, quickly caught on with the Grizzlies, signing a two-way deal with the team last November. He appeared in 18 NBA games during his rookie season, averaging 2.2 PPG and 1.1 RPG in limited action (8.8 MPG).
Because McDermott’s two-way contract covered two seasons, he had remained under team control to start the 2021/22 league year, but it looks like he’s no longer in the team’s plans for the time being.
Memphis now has an open two-way contract slot, with Killian Tillie occupying the other one. Yves Pons, who is on an Exhibit 10 contract, looks like a candidate to claim the second two-way deal before the regular season, notes Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian (Twitter link).
Besides Tillie and Pons, the Grizzlies’ other 18 players are on guaranteed contracts. That includes Juan Hernangomez and Jarrett Culver, who were acquired from Minnesota in exchange for Patrick Beverley in the trade that was completed today, and Rajon Rondo, whom Herrington doesn’t expect to still be on the team when the season begins (Twitter link).
Cavs:
-Brooks
-Konchar (using McGee exception)
-Merrill or Oturu (Memphis’s choice, using Porter Jr. exception)
Memphis:
-Osman
-Lottery protected 2022 Cavs first rounder (but looses protection over the years if not received, i.e., top 10 protected in 2023, top 5 in 2024, etc.)
Grizzles now at 16 players, Cavs at 15. Grizzlies can trade or cut Rondo as rumors have said, and be at 15. One could say that having the lottery pick protected won’t do anything because Cavs will probably be in the lottery, but having our core plus a 25 y/o Brooks is enough in itself to lose a pick in the 7-14 range (my guess of where Cavs will finish…hopefully)
What detail. MEM has too many, CLE a couple too few, so trade!
I like getting Konchar and Merrill; IDK Oturo but sounds like he is comfortable, and has moves, inside. Slovenia had Konchar as a 3pt guy but he was fun to watch in SL last year as an inside hustle guy. Merrill is a 2G when teams want wings.
Is Dillon worth it. He is not a stats guy but did have a +7 on-off at the 3, reflecting his impact on a game. He almost seems too important in a game, if that is a thing. Surely he revs up Morant? I think he has that effect somehow.
Anderson would be fine instead of Brooks and Melton or Tyus Jones instead of the lessers.
MEM keeps Bane, Clarke, Tillman, 3 stars.
I am not sure Melton or Jones would fit into the trade because of cap space and their contracts being too much for us to take on and too much for our trade exceptions. I agree that Brooks has a kind of effect on players because he is high intensity and players can feed off that. The only reason I would pass on Anderson, although I love him and his game, is because of 3 point shooting. Even if Brooks is missing, he is still taking them and forcing the defense focuses on him and his scoring ability.
Doesn’t matter though, I just read that neither the Cavs nor Grizzlies have discussed a Brooks/Anderson trade yet and imo if the Cavs were slightly interested I am sure they would have called them by now. Oh well.
This is laughable Brooks himself is worth 2 FRP right now. Possibly the best value contract in the entire NBA.
Brooks is so good that they want to get rid of him and replace him with someone good
One Cavs 2022 protected lottery pick > Two picks from a non lottery team over multiple years.
You can’t combine TPEs with players or other TPEs in a trade. So this would have to be three separate deals.
Still say beat deal for Memphis is Brooks and Anderson to Sacramento for Hield and picks.
Money works. Sacramento keeps their guard depth with Brooks, Fox, Haliburton, and Mitchell plus adds wing depth
Grizzlies clear roster spaces, get a better 3p shooter in Hield, and picks up some picks to build around their young core- trade for a star or trade up in the trade using their picks and sacs picks.
Dropping Sean McDermott is a huge addition for them
He needs to just focus on the Bills in all reality..
