There was talk last week that the Pelicans would be a serious suitor for Chris Paul in free agency, but that chatter seems to have faded, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic, who says the veteran point guard is now widely expected to re-sign with the Suns.
As Hollinger explains, he heard the Suns’ initial offer to Paul when the two sides were discussing a possible extension was somewhat “underwhelming,” but the club now appears prepared to offer a more serious package. No one around the league will be surprised if the total value of Paul’s new deal gets up to $100MM or more, Hollinger adds.
Here are several more free agent rumors from Hollinger:
- Amidst rumors that Evan Fournier‘s price tag may be too high for the Celtics‘ liking, Hollinger suggests that the Knicks may be the team preparing to make an aggressive offer to the free agent wing. Hollinger adds that it’s worth keeping an eye on Mitchell Robinson and the Knicks, since a renegotiate-and-extend deal is a possibility for the two sides. That sort of agreement would give Robinson a raise for 2021/22 and lock him up for multiple seasons.
- If the Bulls don’t land Lonzo Ball, one of their backup plans may be offering Derrick Rose a deal in the neighborhood of $12MM per year, says Hollinger.
- Hollinger’s sources expect T.J. McConnell to stick with the Pacers for a deal worth around – or slightly above – the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.9MM), but the competition for Doug McDermott will be fiercer and Indiana will face tax issues if the team wants to re-sign both players without trimming salary elsewhere.
- If Richaun Holmes‘ presumed suitors – such as Charlotte and Toronto – end up using their cap room in other ways, he might be squeezed in free agency, allowing the Kings to re-sign him despite only holding his Early Bird rights. If that scenario plays out, Hollinger expects Holmes to sign a two-year deal with a player option so that he can hit the open market again in 2022 with full Bird rights.
- There hasn’t been much free agent chatter surrounding Nuggets guard Will Barton or Trail Blazers Norman Powell, according to Hollinger, who writes that teams seems to be assuming those two players will remain with their respective clubs.
- It has been tricky to figure out what the Spurs plan to do with their projected cap room, says Hollinger. Daniel Theis is the most prominent free agent target Hollinger has heard linked to San Antonio.
3 years / $100 million for a 37 year old point guard, even one with CP3’s resume, is not a smart financial move.
Umm he led them to an NBA finals last year? Who cares about his resume as a whole. CP3 still plays at a high level and can help lead the Suns deep in the playoffs.
Suns would be a first round exit or even not make playoffs if other teams didnt get injured. Jazz,Clippers,Lakers,Denver,Dallas,Warriors,Blazers>
What if’s are always a stretch.
Led them to the playoffs and then lost due to injuries, as is tradition.
Yeah so let Paul go and replace him with who? They won’t have cap space to get someone better and that would definitely not please Devin Booker.
I would not be giving Paul 100m. just no way.
The funny thing is that if he was on Philly instead of Simmons, you wouldn’t be saying this. He instantly makes Philly a title contender with Embidd as opposed to Simmons.
Can you tell me what else I’d be saying if I won the lottery for example? How about buying a new car?
Fact of matter, you don’t know. I didn’t want them to trade for Paul when the rumors came up a year or two ago, and I wouldn’t want them to sign him to that contract.
of course he makes us a title contender. but I don’t want him at that number. Pretty simple as to what I was saying, but I’ll dumb it down for you in the future.

Thank god you aren’t the one signing checks. We didn’t sniff the playoffs for 10 years hell I’d pay the devil himself if it meant a chance at getting back to the finals!!!
CP3 is getting his 44mil back, for starters.
Another 2 years at 25mil per year means 3yrs/94 mil.
So, he’ll get a 3/100 deal somewhere… Phoenix, New Orleans…
Fournier is who we need. Let’s do this Thibs. Rose is not a starting PG anymore. He will not last on starter mins. But 12 mill is hard to turn down. Knicks not paying that for a backup PG. Bulls would be fools to start Rose. But they’ve been fools for awhile now. Now another high pick is going , Markkanen. Is Zach leaving next
Fournier would be nice. The dude was doing 19points before he got traded to Boston.
Fournier is not what the Knicks need. He couldn’t even suffice in Boston. Slow, bad defense, and not a difference maker.
“Aggressive offer”, “Evan Fournier”, and “New York Knicks” are three phrases I’d prefer to never read in HoopsRumor article again.
First off are you a Knicks fan. If not why would you even care what they do. Do you have an option. Or just here to be witty. Let me explain some ball to you witty. You get this is a Baller forum right.
Knicks will sign or trade for a PG and a scorer. Those are our two biggest needs. Fournier is a Shooter/Scorer. Even better for us. Cause we need more shooting. He’s also excellent FT shooter. A shooter spaces the floor for RJ n Randle. Spaces the offense for our team. Something we sorely need to do. Now Fournier just made 17 mill. If you believe the written word. He’s looking for more. 15-20 mill 4-5 yrs. To Knicks he’s worth 75-80 mill 4yrs. Knicks are not going over that. Fournier put up 20 in 30 mins for Magic. He will do same for us. His scoring has gotten better every yr. He’s worth signing for us. He brings what we need most scoring and shooting. He puts up 20 a night for Knicks. What do you think that does for us. Aggressively makes us better, you think.
If you don’t know I’m a Knicks fan you need to pay more attention to the board. Unlike you who simply repeat “Derr I Like Dinwiddie” on every thread I actually provide half decent analysis on a thread here and there.
Secondly, overpaying for mediocre 30 something wings isn’t what we need. Does that need further explaining? Only amongst peabrains. Previous regimes have proven that.
Finally, save the math lessons for the less educated. If anything I should be giving them to you. You seem to think overpaying people shows dedication to winning when dedication to winning is the result of prudent spending AKA the exact opposite of what you’re proposing.
If Knicks had CP last year, they would be the ones going to the finals, not the Hawks. While he old, his last 7 minutes in the 4 quarters have been the stuff of legends, during the regular season and playoff.
You mean conference finals…?
yeah, my bad. meant conference finals

Yeah go back to PlayStation. Booker and Ayton are the reason Suns had their yr. Chris did what he’s done his whole career. You just got it. Is all that needs to be said.
Your nuts and your comment is a slap in the face to Chris Paul. It would be interesting to see Chris Paul not go to the Suns and see how the suns do… I’m sure Payne can take over and do the same thing = ) I don’t play PlayStation anymore, unfortunately.
I’m a big booker fan but give respect where it is due….. cant believes I have to say this to a Knicks fan.
Go learn ball . I got no time to school you.
His whole career. What part of that do you need explained.
One player doesn’t win anything. What One player does for one team is not what he will do for other teams. Knicks don’t want no part of 39 yr old PGods. Let Chris get his ring in Phoenix. Leave NY out of it ok. That simple enough for you.
Point taken. Nothing like a Monday L huh? Enjoy it.
Do your homework and lose the condescension. You’re arguing against an all-time great right below proposing an “aggressive offer” for a historically poor playoff performer in Fournier….right after we got embarrassed in R1.
Why do I have to explain this to you?
Your analyses on this thread is more depressing than Fournier’s hairline.
no offense, and not just saying that in an internet snarky way, but genuinely…I dont even know what to tell you if you believe that. Not saying its just Chris Paul either b/c its Mikal Bridges, its Jae Crowder, its Cam Johnson, its Torrey Craig, its Dario Saric, its Javon Carter, its Cam Payne, its Frank Kaminsky, its Langston Galloway…and its those guys WITH Chris Paul, but specifically, its all of those guys, including, and especially Chris Paul, around Booker and Ayton that hide their deficiencies and allow them to just do what they do. Matchups also matter, as we saw, when they kept leaving Ayton out there against lineups without Brook Lopez, and how it hurt them refusing to use Kaminsky after Saric got hurt, and when Kaminsky did play, he played well
also historically, Chris Paul is one of, if not the greatest 4th quarter performer ever, and is still the greatest 2 way PG in the NBA, and one of the best overall players in the NBA. I had him top 4 until 2 years ago, and only moved him into the 19012 spot because of previous injuries and the assumption people fall off at some point with age…and he has fallen off slightly, but he was so elite, that doesnt really matter that much
Spurs big free agent plan is Daniel Theis? Lol. Just blow it up already. Glory days are gone. Trade everyone except the guys on rookie deals.
Pop must think Duncan & Co are still there and the Spurs off season goal is again to look for back of the rotation guys among low priced FAs and under the radar draftees.
