8:35pm: The signing is official, according to a press release from the team.
5:37pm: Free agent swingman Isaac Bonga is signing with the Raptors, Blake Murphy of The Athletic reports.
Bonga’s deal will likely include a small guarantee and give him a chance to compete for a roster spot in training camp, Murphy adds.
Bonga became an unrestricted free agent when the Wizards declined to extend him a qualifying offer. He has played for Washington the past two seasons after beginning his career with the Lakers.
The 2018 second-round pick started 49 of 66 games in 2019/20, averaging 5.0 PPG and 3.4 RPG in 18.9 MPG. His playing time dropped dramatically this past season, as he played in 40 games (eight starts) and posted modest stats (2.0 PPG, 1.7 RPG in 10.8 MPG). He went scoreless in 10 playoff minutes.
Bonga, 21, projects to be one of a handful of players with partial guarantees vying for roster spots in Toronto, joining the likes of Sam Dekker, Ishmail Wainright, and Yuta Watanabe.
Oversized athlete? Long wingspan? Shooting ability not there yet? That’s a Raptor!
Don’t say that to KnickerbockerAl. He thinks the best players in the league are always the tall ones, even though centers are getting smaller every year.
Should get Ntilikina too.
Backup pg is a need position for Raps. Flynn is a GL player as witnessed again in tonight’s game against GS. I like Frankie, Raps should get him. Bonga didn’t get enough run with Wizards. Only 21, has length and skills. Raps has demonstrated it can find diamonds in the rough.
Flynn a GL player ?
Really ?
STRONGLY DISAGREE
Believe me, Raps has a fine record in finding and developing talent. Flynn is a rare miss and sooner we move on the better.
Flynn is similar to FVV, which is part of why I thought they would let FVV walk last year. They got him at the end of the 1st round, so not sure about calling that a “miss”
Saying Flynn is the same as Fred is like saying Yuta is the same as LeBron. Flynn is a miss. Look at who was picked right after D.Bane who made it to all rookie team. You can get someone like Flynn from the GL any and every year.
Well, Bane should have gone well before that. Didnt even remember he fell, but Flynn was the obvious pick for Toronto for a good while, leading up to the draft, in terms of who should have been left on the board, and fit for their need. Again though, at the time, I didnt think they would pay FVV, and if you’ve watched him play, before the draft in evaluations, and even now, they’re extremely similar
The raps just drafted 2(3) point guards. They know they missed with Flynn
@Joe Golfer… I mean I don’t know who you think FVV is, but he ain’t LBJ… FVV is a very below par starter PG in the league, he probably wouldn’t even start in like 28 teams in the league, right?
you and joe both do not know what your talking about… FVV is a great shooter and is a solid defender… he is imo a top 10 pg in the league. and joe Malachi is not a miss, it has been one season and he performed well when given the opportunity and you said in his recent game against Golden State we saw he was a miss… like bruh it’s summer league it means close to nothing… ur opinion are ass and shouldn’t be said,
thank you for ur time dumb and dumber
After Bruno, Flynn is the worst pick by the Masai crew. You can find someone with his limited skill set in the GL any and every year. And dumb is as dumb does.
Bonga got plenty of time to improve in Washington and I’m glad the “Bonga experiment is over”! Good luck to him but he is nothing special.
Totally agree. Frank would be the perfect reclamation project for the Raptors.
You mean he sux. Maybe Raps want better.
How many times has Golfer put down Flynn, calling him GL. Well add a couple more.
They’re going to have an unbelievable defense, even after losing one of the best 2 way guards in the league
Really thought a bunch of teams could have used him, as some here may have noticed lol. They definitely still need to add another shooter, but while injuries have been an issue for them at times these last couple of years, I think they should be able to withstand them this coming season, with so much versatile depth
